Is there a way to capture through Firewire in Premiere to avoid getting compression artifacts after several exports/loads?

My problem is that my computer system is really cheap, and so I don't have much HD space; I need to edit my film in chunks, export the clips, delete the raw footage, and then after all the scenes are finished, re-load the footage to comprise a final cut.

I've done this in the past, and due to the footage being through several generations, the quality drops, and I get major artifacting. Is there a setting to use where I can *not* compress the footage as I capture it? Or am I just being idealistic?

Thanks in advance...

There are three things you can do. FIrst with the compression, you will enevitably get compression artifacts after rerendering a file several times, but I have found that it helps to have the "recompress" box on the rendering screen unchecked as it seems to give much better results. Second thing you could do is buy a second internal hard drive, 120 gigs are going for under 100 bucks right now. If you just don't have room in your case get an external usb2.0 or firewire drive. It's a little more expensive but work great. I myself have on 80gig system drive (2 partitions) a second internal 120 for editing, one external 120 (for system backup), and one external 200gig also for editing. this will, in the long run save you a lot of time and give you much better results, than editing with a single system drive.

you need more drive space. thats like trying to race a car with 2 wheels. eat pb+j for a week, and get a big A/V drive.
