View Full Version : 16mm format Primes with DOF adapter considerations

If using a set of 16mm format Zeiss Primes (from my friend's Aaton Package) and lets say the Letus adapter, will I have to zoom in more with my camcorder lens to find the sweet spot than I would with 35mm primes or stills? Pretty sure that's a yes but want to confirm.

Also, I understand that DOF is effected by the format size so a 16mm format lens would have a larger DOF than a 35mm.

QUESTIONS:
1. Is all the above true?

2. What sort of difference has anyone noticed in regards to Bokeh with 16mm format lenses? (i know thats a subjective question but - it's a forum!)

3. Is the shallowed DOF (as compared to the stock camcorder lens) improved very much or is it really subtle?

4.Does a 16mm format lens with 50mm focal length become a 100mm lens when using the adapter (one designed for 35mm like the Letus or Brevis)?

5.What other considerations am I overlooking in this scenario?

6.Oh yeah, Dennis. Does Brevis offer a PL option with the Brevis?

Thanks to all!

Sorry if this info is elsewhere but spent enough time hunting and pecking so thought I'd just throw it out there. If there is a thread just reply with a link and a hint so we don't clutter things up.

1. No. DOF actually has nothing to do with sensor size. It's purely a function of the focal length and the f-stop. The difference between a lens designed for 16mm and a 35mm format lens is that the 16mm format lens will have less even illumination, because the smaller sensor will "see" less of the area that it projects. So you're right in that using a 16mm format lens will result in much more severe vignetting (similar to using Nikon DX lenses or Canon EF-S lenses), to the point where the image is likely to be unusable, but the DOF will remains the same.

3. You're still getting the FOV from a 35mm size GG, so DOF is much shorter than the stock.

4. Yes, and no. The ground glass element on a 35mm adapter is typically much larger than even film 35mm surface, so you would end up seeing a wider FOV if you ignore having to crop for vignetting. But if you end up having to zoom in to clear vignetting then a wide might end up as a telephoto lens, although there's no clean conversion factor as this depends on the lens, the adapter and the camera.

5. I believe Cinevate does offer a PL mount for the Brevis.

Cinevate does offer a PL mount for the Brevis. It's expensive though. You'd be better off to buy yourself some good used lenses than mangle with these 16mm primes! It's up to you though!
