View Full Version : HVX200A better in noise in black and shadows?
So I have a hvx200a, after previously owning a hvx200. From my eye the noise does look better. However i still see an issue in black and shadow areas. It looks like macroblocks. Weird fragmentation. Just wondering by anybody elses experience if the issue still persists even with a more upgraded camera. And is dropping the master pedastal level (crushing the blacks in camera) the only solution? By the way in the menu of the camera i accidently have the IRE set to 7.5. Could this have been an issue in my tests?
thanks

How and on what are you monitoring on? Do you see the issues on multiple monitors or have you checked that? Have you also checked on a consumer plasma or lcd?
Back in the dark ages of 2006, I didn't have a real HD monitor and was only using my Dell 2405 and it has tons of macroblocking. Then when I looked at the same footage on my Sony HD monitor, looked fine, perfect, no blocking in the darks.

yes, puredrifting is right. monitoring will effect what you see in terms of grain and what. the 200a is a whole lot better in the blaks then the regular 200.
On my marshall i don't see too many. but as soon as i burned a dvd copy they were very visible. I figure a lot of factors figure into this.
1) I had the IRE set accidently to 7.5.
2) I had master pedadstel set to 0
3) And i had the cinelook V set
do you thing these things contribute to macroblocks?

it wont record 7.5 IRE setup. Thats only on the video out.
Its probably an encoding setting fo the DVD. If your monitor is showing the Macroblocking, and your compress a DVD, the DVD is going to try to encode the macroblocks way down in the blacks, and now pixelated macroblocks are becoming visble on DVD playback. the DVCproHD codec does macroblock but on a well calibrated video monitor (notice i said monitor not Computer Monitor), it doesnt show up. if you watch the DVD on a good Video Monitor, it wont show up either.
So is the HVX200A supposed to be substantially better in the blacks then the hvx or just marginally better. Because to tell you the truth i don't see a huge improvement.

I think the biggest difference you'll see is in the lowest of light conditions. The noise advantage of the 200a there is enormous. In more normal lighting conditions you'll most likely just see a slightly brighter image mainly, reflecting the asa 500 vs 320 difference between the cams. The blacks will be a bit cleaner, but it won't be as dramatic as the comparison in low light.
So if you want to make yourself feel great about switching to the "A", put it alongside a non-"A", point them both at a shadowy area in a dimly lit room, and go wide open on the irises. I guarantee the word "wow" will pop out of your mouth almost immediately...

The place where the 200A is extremely improved in noise performance is in the midtones to whites. There's still some grain in the darks. Look at this comparison video to see exactly how much improved the 200A is over the 200.

We have one of each. The 200-A is no doubt better. But we are still happy with the 200 for most of our shooting as long as we keep ped at -4ish. Black Press is yoru friend.
I've been noticing that so many commercials now days over exagerate the blacks. Many times to a stupid level. But it's the "IN" look now days. :)
