I have a snow shoot with an ex3 in the morning any suggestions? I have shot with the camera a bit and have used an ex1 a lot but not for this type of shoot. I'm going to be snowboarding with the thing and shooting a kid also snowboarding for a reality tv show. One of my biggest concerns is our Director has gotten on a couple cam ops about exposure, now I got the warning about this early on and have shot everything with the zebras on since my friend got me on the production. Now I'm hoping I'll still be able to use the zebras but I'm concerned the snow will be covered in zebra no matter what leaving me guessing about exposure and weather or not the snow is blown out. The LCD and evf are both sharp on the cam but for some reason exposure is really hard to get right.

we have had a major headache with this camera clipping, even in moderate conditions. The Zebras, histogram, and VF are apparently not accurate metrics for assessing exposure. We're at loggerheads right now with it. I'm going to PM you a link.

I think you'll find this thread useful:

When you use the cine2 curve in combo with the 70IRE zebras... how could you go wrong?

I think we all replied too late. He's probably on the shoot right now.

Hey guys! Sorry for the late reply, I shot that snow stuff for b-roll and the actual production started the next day so I was strapped for time. I really appreciate everyones input. I ended up using the cine2 setting and zebras and just stopped down until there were no more zebras on the skin tone of the subject. It was probably the most down and dirty shoot I've ever had to deal with but the footage looks pretty good! Thanks again!!

Would the same rules /setting hold up roughly for sand?
Im heading south and looking to shoot some stock footage.

Hey SMG, what was your zebra set to?

What kind of sand? If it's sand dunes, they aren't that bright. But if it's a white sand beach then maybe yes. You might try CINE4 as a compromise between the full strength of CINE2.

Anything white would be handled the same way.

I shoot a Cine 4 setting and watch for clipping using zebras, the historgram and just keeping an eye on the image in the viewfinder. The camera's got good dynamic range and I've had no trouble with either sand or whitewater in waves or behind boats.

Mostly sandy beaches of Maui.
So they will be all different colors.
CINE4 is my standard profile and I am very happy with that one.
