video preview problems

ok I have got a 250 gig external hdd hooked up via firewire and then I have another firewire cable running to my deck and moniter for previews. the problem is when I have the hdd plugged in with the dv deck the preview won't work at all, it works fine with the drive unplugged. so I don't know if the card is confused on which device to preview to, but I wondered if there is a way around this problem

its because Firewire on the same bus is limited to the bandwidth per bus, if you add 2 items, your bandwidth gets cut in half.
