Capturing clips from video files

I use Premiere Pro 1.5 and do fine capturing clips from DV tape. I also have a lot of AVI and MPG files that are copies of tapes I don't have anymore. I would like to log multiple clips from a single AVI or MPG file, just like I can from a DV device.

How can I do this? I can't find any options for directing the capture to a video file instead of a DV device.

just load the file, and chop it up as you want in the editor.

Yes, as iaml said. Just select Import from the Project pane. Once you have loaded the source video you can then generate clips within the monitor window.
