I noticed that a lot of the topics here are about the scene files. I was wondering if it would be possible to get a sub forum created to fit in the Technical -HMC150 forum.
We could use it to post our custom scene files and discuss them. I think it could be very beneficial and stand to keep a decent amount of organization going.
Other than that.. I actually have a question :dankk2: about the scene files. In your opinions, would you say that the scene files can achieve a certain look that can't be gotten in post? Even by a very experienced colorist?

wow, no one answered.
well, i just got my hmc150 and am excited about using the scene files.
with my old camera (canon hg10), i used to subscribe to the school of shooting flat (cine gamma) and cc-ing in post. At some point i realized that i could only do so much in post and that i wasn't getting the look i really wanted. So i stopped shooting in cine gamma and started really pushing the manual settings in-camera to shoot the look i wanted. what i discovered was that not only did i have a lot less work to do cc-ing in post, but suddenly my image quality was much better.
i'm not sure this will be true for the hmc150, but i suspect that some of it will carry over simply because the camera has a LOT of influence over the information recorded. what i mean is, these cameras are not recording raw images, they are coloring and limiting the output significantly, even when shooting in a flat cine gamma.
make a test. shoot the same shot twice, once with a cine gamma, very neutral, and then once with some scene file settings tweaked to the look you want. then try color correcting the first one to match the second and see how well it works for you.
i think i'll do the same test myself!

I love the idea of either a sub forum or a sticky. I hope that along with the scene file, people post screen grabs of what it looks like, for quick reference.

we've tried scene file sub-forums, stickies, etc on more than one occasion in the past.. Personally, I think it's a great idea, but for whatever reason they have always flopped.
If you guys want to start a thread here and share your scene files, I'll be more than happy to stick it, and we'll just go from there.
Later,

There was a post here in the 150 section not too long ago that linked to a list of Scene File setting that gave different looks. You could download them after you signed up to the site. I believe it was a Panasonic site too.
I cannot remember where or the name but to answer your question, yes the scene files can be used to give different looks coming out of the camera.
Many of the looks made me think of Magic Bullet Looks but with more detail, if that sounds right....
