Hello there, I recently bought an Hpx171, i made this test and I need some advice from you all experts, i read about Lens wobble problem, can you tell me if it's the same problem that evr'ybody has? At full zoom shows a strange and vibrating effect on the edge of the subject.
Shot at 1080i25p, auto-focus, I just made a simple zoom at 99%.
I'm waiting for your confirm so I can send the camera to Panasonic Europe describing exactly the problem I have.

Were you jiggling the lens at that point?

Thanks Barry, I didn't touch the camera, I zoomed with the panasonic remote control to 99% (in and out), I've used as reference monitor Bravia Sony KDL-40X4500 via component. The camera was on the table (I don't have a tripod). The subject was placed on the surface of a lighting table (a table to trace raw drawings, so the light coming from the bottom, but I've also used two electric lamps on the left and right of the subject) In the original footage (1080p 25p) is very noticeable. I've also noticed a strange effect, in other tests, if I continue to zoom pressing the zoom button on the camera (when it's at 99%), the image seems rotating on the left side, it's like the lens continues ramping on the left side so I can see a part of the subject (left side) continuing to coming out. I'm really really worried, considering I must shot a documentary in january, and you know, it's very simple to zoom at 99& when you are shooting documentary stuff. I sent a message to Luis Cafesse too, I've watched some test conducted by him on Vimeo...now what I must do?

Well, I don't know what to tell you, I haven't seen any camera do that. The "lens wobble" was related to a physical design of the lens and you could introduce some side-to-side movement when manually adjusting the lens. What you're describing is completely unrelated, and obviously a trip to the service center may be warranted.

What you're describing is completely unrelated, and obviously a trip to the service center may be warranted. Thanks Barry, I will repeat the test soon, also suspect could be a shake caused by a train that is very near to my home (it's distant 30 meters from my home), but I remember that I've done the test in the late night, the train doesn't work at that hour. Do you say when a camera it's affected by lens wobbling doesn't show an effect in the footage? I remember a guy here that pointed out, watching a clip posted by another user, a strange problem with floating grass that was vibrating and pulsating, so I've concluded that lens wobbling problem affected the footage as showing an effect like mine. Luis Cafesse also did some test on Vimeo where him does zoom and focus various vertical lines of the wall the seem to show a strange vertical shift appling a vertical mask as reference for the footage, so I supposed was the same problem that I have.

Looks like your cam and subject on a table and you were shaking your foot on the floor. Or a dog or cat was scratching and ear or something. ... was your test by chance done on a wood or second story floor?

It's happened to me with the HVX200. Pretty sure it's the autofocus that's doing in. Don't shoot auto. Shoot with manual focus and use the autofocus buton the get a fast focus.

... was your test by chance done on a wood or second story floor? I will redo the test soon, the camera was on a wood extension table (a piece of a forniture that hosts my pc) where usually there's the keyboard (it could be a little unstable, but I did't touch the plate), but I've repeated the zoom in and out various times via panasonic remote control without touching the camera, and evr'y time it showed the problem. So I must try a more stable table to understand where's the problem.

yes, at full telephoto, the autofocus will pulse, nothing is wrong, it's just the nature of the autofocus. It has trouble locking in at full zoom.
