As you might have read on this forum, the Red Rock microMatteBox is a very popular matte box due to it's competitive price and swing-away design. Do a search for Barry Greens review of it a while back.

Anyway, we purchased one as part of an EX3/Letus Ultimate camera rig setup and I was worried that it would be quite some time before we received it. Red Rock's website states that they are 14 days out on shipping them.

But we ordered ours on Monday and received it today! (Thursday) We were very surprised. We also ordered the carrying case and microFilter set to go with it.

Just thought I ought to pass this on if anyone was thinking of ordering one. They have obviously caught up on their back log of orders.

Okay I just assembled it. It's HUGE! Very well built. I am a slight big disappointed that the lever arms (to tighten/loosen) are made of blue plastic instead of aluminum. But the plastic seems to be of good quality, but time well tell on that.

The good news is that they now ship it with a complete set of extra thumb screws and tightening levers all in black (instead of blue). That was unexpected.

Also, the cardboard box that it ships in is lined with the same laser cut foam thats inside their optional case. If I would have known that, I might not have bought the optional case and just used the carboard box. You could always buy a pelican case down the road when the cardboard wears out. The foam inside is of very good quality and looks to last a long time.

My only grip is that the side wings don't tighten in their mounts very well. You really have to crank on the thumb screw to get them to stay in place. I didn't use pliers as I don't want to mar the heads of the thumb screws.

It's a VERY attractive looking matte box. Definitely worth the money. Amazing that you can get this quality for such an attractive price.

Hi Mitch,

It's true, our backlog of mattebox orders has been gone for some time. The official lead time is still 14 days but we expect to drop that shortly.

The thumbscrews are metal, they just have an anti-reflective coating that I guess makes them look a little like plastic. And of course, if you've got trouble with the side wings, get in touch with me at support@redrockmicro.com. They might take a little time to break in.

Cheers!

Really? It's obvious that the thumb screws are metal, but the "paddle screws" are metal as well? Good to know. Thanks Andrew
