so I went to look at the hpx 170 at a local store and the guy told me that you can use a Lacie Rugged hard drive to offload your video without removing the P2 card and the firewire port would power the lacie drive. Just wondering if this is doable. I didn't even know you could do this. If so, I'm sold!
Here is the drive.

You can offload footage to this. It is slow and not really recommended because you have no way a verifying if everything copied over okay. but You can do it for sure.

I wouldn't trust any Lacie drive.
Too many failures, both with mine as well as others.

Easy way. Just attach the cam to your laptop via firewire and transfer that way. Or if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot just download P2CMOS from the panny website with the correct drivers insert the P2 card and offload that way. or you could use a duel adapter if you only have an express card slot. (I assume that you are dumping footage in the field)
note: I have used Lacie drives for years without issue. but I have heard plenty of horror stories. No Hard drive is 100% reliable 100% percent of the time. Just do your research before you buy one.

BTW, the firewire port on the camera cannot power anything. it is only 4 pin.

The HPX170's firewire port will not power the drive.
The 170 does have what appears to be the larger 6 pin firewire plug, the HPX170 does not supply power through it.
