View Full Version : Shutter control is what we need on the 5Dm2!!

Hi all, there are several ways to get aperture control of the 5Dm2... now we desperately need SHUTTER CONTROL!!!
Then we will have what we want :) - 1/60th, 1/125th = nice film-motion... hhmmmmmm!
Whenever my 5Dm2 uses anything below 1/60th shutter it looks like video ..... HELP!
Ive noticed when zooming in telephoto on the kit-lens the camera chooses nicer shutter speeds... But then it unlocks when you zoom out again...
The exposure compensation wheel helps sometimes but Canon have this incredible way of not allowing the "golden iso/shutter combo" no matter how hard I try and play and fiddle!!

Why would "anything below 1/60th look like video" when a film cameras shutter angle is 180 degrees, or 1/48th of a second?

I must agree with Andrew. What are you saying? :huh:

Ideally we want a 180 degree shutter angle.
(obviously there is no spinning shutter, but that is the characteristic we are after).
180deg = 1/48th @ 24fps
180deg = 1/60th @ 30fps
So on a 30p camera 1/60th would be equivalent to a 180deg shutter angle.

Well..yeah...when it's shooting 24fps a 180 degree shutter is 1/48. But since this cam is at 30fps then a 180 degree shutter would be 1/60. I think when you go too low then the picture starts to smear....with an unatural blur.
Edit: Ok...Lee beat me to it.

He definitely uses the word "below" in the sense of "faster". 1/60 is, also in still photography, the magic barrier for handheld shots and therefore for motion blur.

not at all. it's slower that causes the video look. i've nothing against slower speeds myself though, i love the extra stop 1/25 gives me on video. when there's one thing, just one thing, that video is better at you don't want to use it because of some stupid rule that moving images should look like they were shot on film? besides i have a super 8 camera with a 220 degree shutter. :-)

To make that clear, Matt: You mean with a 5D 1/30 looks more like video than 1/60?

i don't know what i think really but yeah that's what everybody else means.

Well, all I know is that the 360 degree shutter scenes in movies like Apocalypto or 21 really jump out at me in a bad way.

Look at any video camera that shoots 30P (not 60i) the default shutter speed with be 1/30th. I personally like the look of 1/60th at 30P but shutter speed has nothing to do with frame rate as already mentioned. You think all those war and action movies are shot at 1/48th? The action scenes are shot at very high frame rates. Motion blur looks like motion blur but any of the shutter speeds that come out to eh 5D II aren't extreme in either direction, you just wouldn't want the shutter speed to change while you are filming or throught a few different shots.
In my opinion, progressive 30P looks more like the 24 frame rate of film than it looks to 60i video. I would be shooting most stuff with 30P as it is unless I had something that needed a cinema narrative look.

not any, just many. i think the hv30 uses 1/60, i know it uses 1/48 in 24p mode. most eng cameras that shoot progressive use a 360 degree shutter unless you turn on the shutter, in which case it defaults to 180 degrees.

presumably because the rest isn't?
