Hey guys!

Yesterday I decided to do some tests with slow motion with After Effects.
Shot with the HMC150 at 720/60p edited onto 720/24p timeline. Hope you guys like it. :2vrolijk_08:

Here's the clip of my test. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6eEh4_rzR8&fmt=22)

looks good. I like the color correction. How does the merlin work with it?

Thanks Thomas. I appreciate the kinds words. The Steadicam Merlin is GREAT! The HMC150 naked is 3.7lbs and the Steadicam Merlin max load is 5lbs. Together, a balanced HMC150/Merlin combo is about 7-8lbs. Be warned that carrying around the this setup makes your arm just tired. I mean, 7-8lbs doesn't sound heavy, but when you are doing it for 1-2 hours staight, it is not fun. The arm and vest would help significantly. But you're looking at an extra $1800 in cost.

It does take some time to learn the Steadicam, but once you practice a few times, your footage can look very smooth.

how in the hell did you do that? did you drop 24p footage into 60 timeline? or what?

Yeah! I know that most high end cameras are shooting at 120fps to be able to get super slow motion, but I think 60fps per second it pretty damn good. Gives you a lot of room for flexibility.

ESTEBEVERDE...I WISH I could get people to do some fast moving action so that I can try to some slow motion on it.

I was watching the WATCHMEN trailer number 2 and there's a beautiful scene where the a guy (the Comedian) gets thrown around in his apartment. He then gets thrown out the window that they do in slow motion....it's just an amazing shot.

Now I have to find friends who are into martial arts so I can film them. That would be a lot of fun.

I shot at 60fps. Then I dropped it into a 24fps timeline in After Effects. After Effects, and many other programs (Sony Vegas, Apple Motion) have the technology to blend frames together to create an in-between frame that keeps the slow motion smooth. Adobe calls it Pixel Motion.

With these programs I would say you can slow your footage down by 5 times the normal speed without noticeable pixel shifting artifacts.

Here is a great tutorial on how to achieve this in After Effects. (http://www.videocopilot.net/basic/tutorials/06.Time/index.php)

Orange County, CA. I would love to see some footage of martial arts in slow motion. I think after doing some tests you'll want to choreograph an action sequence....I know I would.

Seriously, it only takes one small minor mistake and he's got you down. I can't imagine his take down move is all that good on his back over time.

At this level Judo looks easy in a sense but in reality it's the hardest thing you will ever do.

All the guys he is playing there are accomplished and play at the international Olympic level so they are the toughest to get down. He does so with amazing regularity.

It's funny because we have a fairly large number of Black Belt BJJ (Brazilan JuJutzu) guys show up to learn Judo so they have better take downs.

They rarely last more than a few days and none have lasted more than 2 weeks.

And that's with us going very easy on them so they can get use to falling.

They are much better at the ground game but we do half and half ne-waza/tachi-waza so we can hold our own.

As far as Koga's back I don't know. But, hopefully I will get to ask him when he comes. I don't want to bother him too much but it would be cool to chat him some.

If you would like to get some cool footage of people flying the USJA Nationals in San Diego would be a great place!

You might even get some footage of guys getting choked out and some arm bars etc.

Awesome footage! The CC is superb! I would love to see the 1080p version, do you have it? If not can you post it on Vimeo? Thanks!

Thanks Retrospective! I'm still working at getting better and always learning more about lighting a scene or working with existing light.

Unfortunately, I've starting shooting at 720p on the camera, so no 1080p footage exists. The HMC150's "sweet spot" is really at 720, not 1080. But after looking at both settings, I think I'll return to 1080p. It's not as bad as some might say it is. I think that I was really starting to become a pixel peeper and I might have lost sight of the content of the footage.

I don't load onto Vimeo anymore because Youtube supports 720p now. Vimeo limits you to 1 HD upload a week. I could probably upgrade to Vimeo Plus, but ever since YouTube, Facebook, and Myspace upgraded to HD and don't have a ceiling for loading, I'm inclined to think Vimeo isn't going to stay around for too long if they don't start making advances soon. I am unaware of any Video sites that support 1080p. The compression for both Youtube and Vimeo aren't great, but they aren't THAT bad. I think you're splitting hairs between the two.

Well I am buying a camera in the next few weeks or so and HMC150 got my attention in terms of price, features and quality.

I've seen both great and bad footages out there but it's hard to judge when watching these over Vimeo or Youtube since they are all recompressed in such way. I guess thats why people wanted to see both raw and CC'ed footage to judge the quality. Your slow mo footage looks so wicked! So smooth! But how does it look in full 720p?

Well if you ever shoot in 1080p please post it on Youtube as well and if you can post the non Youtube/Vimeo version so when can all download it and examine the quality of it. Can you post the full 720p file of your current footage at some free file hosting service for us to see? :)

Thanks!

I actually didn't save the original file because it was a test and I have a tendency to trash a lot of work that are just tests. However, I still have a compressed MOV file that I compressed with Apple Compressor. You'll notice the artifacts in the footage because it's not the RAW footage.

Click here to download the MOV. (http://www.hv20.info/yopu/anthonyvu_walking_in_the_office.mov)

I've seen both great and bad footage with the RED ONE. It's really depends on who's behind the camera.

I'll see if I can more footage to upload for you RAW and CC'ed. That should ease some of your worries. On a side note, did anyone even noticed that YouTube's HD now is displaying even bigger?

Next time I post footage, I'll try to post all my shots including the RAW and edited versions. I really love this camera, but I think I have to disclose that I started with the HV20, so it's a huge step up for me.

Good luck!

Thanks some1shero for providing the 720p! Yes, it would be awesome if you can upload a 720p/24 or 1080p/24 raw footage of even just 20-30 secs. Maybe like a stabilizer shot like the one you posted on Youtube.

Haha yes! Noticed Youtube's HD is even bigger now! Looks like Vimeo's end is near! :O wow! Hopefully Youtube won't limit user's upload of HD materials.

I have also started with an HV30 :) and I loved the quality of gives, the cine mode colours are awesome, Im hoping its very tweakable with the HMC150!

Thanks again!
