Well all.. It happened today. I shot for about 2 hours and the HVX never left the bag. It's all HMC150 time on this. 30' dolly and a black backdrop.. smoked out, and let the white people cut a rug. Shot at 720, 60p.. no color correction and the scale might be off a bit.. Hope you enjoy and this cam is Sweet.. Just it's ability to shoot in low light made this possible.. and impossible for the HVX.
cheers to my 150 brothers:

I must say this is quite silly... BUT I LOVE IT! hmc pride lol
and yeah the scale is off.. how'd u manage to pull that off?
By the way I want to say again this is really really cool. What exactly was this for?
That was too weird Justyn, it looked like they should have been doing a tooth paste or shampoo commercial :D
Man! That 60P slow mo ROCKS!! Nobody could have ever dreamt that such smooth slo mo could be done with a $3,500 camera in the past.

Well.. I manage to mess simple stuff up all the time. For some reason the scale gets off in FCP when I do exports.. when I have the time I usually do it in compressor. I'll upload a new version soon... And if You are wondering what I did... This is a DIY dolly on 30' of track.
Believe it or not, this is one of the elements for our Christmas performance. We will have 5 screens going and this is an element on one of the screens. We did the same thing on white background, with everyone wearing black. Should be quite an interesting contrast. It was my first attempt at black "limbo" style shooting. Soon I want to do something like this with some moving/intelligent lighting and more smoke... When we got done the church was so smoggy, reminded me of LA.
Cheers all and what did you want me to post? I can't do the real camera original files on this as this is for my client, but I'd be happy to post some other 60p stuff.
I too am SO SO happy with what this camera does. I know my HVX200 wouldn't have been fast enough to shoot this... and I don't have a 170 at my disposal. I'm also going to try and do some optical flow slow mo with the ending. Just didn't have the 3 hours it was going to take for my box to render it out. I need a new computer and more Harddrives. Pro Rez are some big files.
Let me know if ther'es something you want to see and I'll upload what I can. cheers!

Wow!!! This was actually great!
I thought it was really funny, and the slo-mo is amazing!
What did you use to light the scene?
What type of room did you shoot it in?
What shutter speeds did you use?
Thanks

Wow....the footage was so hypnotic...
Nice slo-mo work!
Did you do something towards the end of the clip? The speed of the slo-mo seem to have changed, it wasn't as smooth as the beginning part of the clip. What software are you using to slow the footage down?

Cheers guys.
I used a 2k mole richardson from above and two 500 what cheap worklights cliped onto the dolly. Next time, I'm doing intelligent lighting and a ton of concert lights with maybe additional background elements.
We shot this in a gymnasium. I put up paper background. 30' of background and 30 foot dolly shot.. all done on a skatewheel dolly and PVC. no noticable joins and I got all 30' of track for about a 100.
I used faster speeds mostly. 1/250 and sometimes dipping down and then going up.
The slow mo on the end isn't very good yet. It was crudly done in FCP, but I'm going to do one again in motion. I'll repost that soon.
cheers

Justyn, maybe you remember I've changed my HVX with the HCM151 and I was I little worry..... After three weeks of work with the HMC151 I'm not woory anymore. You where right: this camera is really great :very nice picture, great low light performance and ergonomics, cheap and easy to find recording cards, easy workflow on my Mac and so on.

Francesco... I'm glad you made the leap. I'm not looking back either. Simply an easier working system.. For example, I have a multi-cam shoot on Sunday with 3 P2 cameras, couple of single chip cameras, and then the 150. I have to figure out the P2 card situation, I have to get helpers to run cards and offload, and all of this will cost me time, money and aggrevation. Now if they were all 150s, I could cure this situation with a 100 dollar purchase.
P2 is a system that requires tons of cards, and people... Not a one man band and I'm over it!!! I also DONT see any difference in image, other than it's faster, brighter, and less noise.
CONGRATS on getting a great little camera. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get camcorder of the year!

Justyn,
I notice a lot of noise in the background is this just from compression or is this in the source...?

That's the compression... None in the source and it's more of the pixelization on the blacks than anything else. It's way cleaner than my HVX200 ever was. I'll see about posting a still or maybe a short couple of seconds at full rez.

Very cool. Where did you got those sweet girls? ;)

They are from the church. We have a very attractive congregation and I think that's why 80 percent of the church is under 21.. Kind of a different kind of church and a different kind of Christmas performance.

Your "bad dancing" inspired my "overcranked snow" clip. Thanks for getting my brain thinking. I love it!

I had a great time watching this clip.
And in a tongue and cheek way the title makes it more fun as I believe (or hope) everyone involved would poke a little fun at themselves when they see the slo-mo version.
That pregnant gal is gonna have one happy bouncing baby.
I shot a lot of dance for serious companies and some University Dance shows too.
But , Im not sure i've ever seen that many happy people performing in the same piece.
I have an EX1 which I hope to make use of in the future but I often think the 150 just might be the right ticket for documenting dance. Easier on the budget as most groups probably can't afford the cost associated with the workflow of the EX1. I also wonder if the cams could work together for taping the same program. I know there's a difference between the two but my partner and I have used the PD170 and her decade old EZ30 to tape performances and no one comments on the difference. We just learn how to set them up so to get the most out of the little cam.
One advantage with mini DV is that often we can go directly from a DV cam/player to a DVD recorder and hand over a DVD right away. With no firewire for the !50 is there a way to go direct to a recorder and bypass the computer?
Thanks, and again great clip.

Thanks all. This site inspires all of us and as an open source for creative discuss and such.
The church group is a pretty happy go lucky place. I just finished the first screen's worth of content for the Christmas show. I'll post some more high res clips of that. I'm very happy with the low-light nature of this camera and the long record times.. more to come.
Rick, there are a few ways to capture the content via either the component or the HDMI port. I'm not that familiar with the field units, but we did use the intensity card with great success before FCP got up to snuff.. but that's another matter as there's still some lingering bugs.
Maybe someone with more experience here can chime in...
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and if you are in the Orlando area come and check out the show tomorrow. If others are interested in viewing the live show, I might put up a limited access stream. There will be 3 live screens mixing media and 5 live cams.
cheers.

The dancing was a joy to watch. Plus, these girls make me want to go to church. :-)

That's true. There's tons of attractive women at the church and they haven't been used and abused. Some would say hey, I want a woman who has skills and been around the block.. so to each their own. But ultimately they have been great people and great clients. They aren't narrow-minded and very "religious" they just want good quality content at a reasonable price... It's been a true blessing!
