Agreed; nice article.

I really need to get around to seeing On the Waterfront.

!) Brando- for a zillion reasons
2) Gary Oldman - for being the most amazing lead/character actor ever. The fact that he has never been nominated is a disgrace to the acting gods. He must have burned major bridges with some power people in Hollywood.
3)Meryl Streep - simply incredible

All other actors no matter how good are in the next group.

Just my 2 cents...

Forgot De Niro and Pacino. Hackman needs to be included also.

I used to like Bogart but the more I watch Cagney and with the '31's Public Enemy I'd have to go with Cagney partly because of the date. Bogart imo is great as a detective and a hood but Cagney nailed it imo. I liked Bogart in the Maltese Falcon ('41) and the 'African Queen' ('51) off the top of my head, but Cagney's '31 epic, can't beat that. The same year as Frankenstein (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021884/)

'31 man. Must have been a blast in those days.

Liked Stewart in Hitchcocks Rear Window was it, and It's a Wonderfull Life. Brando, I don't get anything. I've seen On the Waterfront. Meh. And Cary Grant, well, I'll just go with it. Didn't do anything for me, on any level, but, hey, the majority sais otherwise.

But no, Cagney's #1. Dude. Period. End Of Story. Kaputt.

Best screen actor ever would undoubtably go to Brando.

What that man brought to the world of film acting will forever be remembered... just completely out of the blue... honest... truthful... though some of this film roles were not quite right, some of them were simply incredible. Namely, "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "On The Waterfront"... completely changed the face of screen acting...

I think timing has a lot to do with it...although there have been a few actors since that can arguably be considered as capable, few changed the face (as has been described) the face of acting...He was the first so the inovator is always held in that esteem. His style and technique is directly attributed, enev in his own words, bio to Adler...also His director Kazan had a lot to do with his success too...

Today though i would have to say the women have it over the men...Streep and Blanchet, clearly the best there is...

Just my opinion...

Best,
Stan The Man

Yep. Jack Nicholson once said, "So I mean it when I say that if you can't appreciate Brando, I wouldn't know how to talk to you. If there's anything obvious in life, this is it. Other actors don't go around discussing who is the best actor in the world, because it's obvious - Marlon Brando is."

I don't know how to enter this conversation. As far as I'm concerned there's no metric for whether Brando was better than Ingrid Bergman, or if Jimmy Stewart was better than Laurence Olivier. All great actors, but...

Is Nicole Kidman better than Phillip C. Hoffman? Or vice-versa? Are you sure?

Does any of the above really mean anything?

What's the best cuisine? The most beautiful dog breed? The coolest band?

David Thewlis is up there.

Too many favorites for me to list...but...

but if one watches/references "On The Waterfront", you HAVE to give some
serious props to ROD STEIGER for his part in that scene. For quite a period of
time (during his close ups) he was working alone, as Brando had left the set...

For my money he was every bit as good as Brando, if not better when you think
about that.
