I've had my HMC150 for about a week now and went through a lot of testing with regards to its settings.

Let me just say I absolutely love this camera! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) My first camera was the Canon HV20, so it is quite an upgrade.

Here is my workflow:

1. Capture 1080/24p to Transcend 16gig Class 6 SDHC (link (http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Class-Memory-Compact-Reader/dp/B0010Z28XG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228868901&sr=8-1))
2. Load into MacBook (not MacBook Pro...it took 10 seconds to load 300mb of footage)
3. Transcode with Roxio Toast Titanium to Apple ProRes 422
4. Edit in Final Cut Pro
5. Color correct in Apple Color
6. Compress footage with Apple Compressor

Click here for the test footage. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9IWLpAFV-M&fmt=18)

Here are shots of the rig.

The HMC150's focus assist ability is great. It is now so much easier to focus without having some sort of high definition external monitor.

I'm going to consider changing my workflow to only shoot in 720p since it is the camera's "sweet spot."

What modes do you guys prefer to shoot in?

Nice setup you got there...

I shoot 1080 24 PH more than anything and transcode to DVCPRO-HD and out-put to Windows Media HD or Flash video.

I have an HV20 and it is very impressive. How much better is the picture in the HMC150?
Less noise? Better Color? How about resolution?

Have you shot any sporting events or other items with lots of motion?

I am VERY close to buying one of these. Any real life comparisons would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks a lot matt! I still have a lot of work to do with regards to getting better footage. it's really all about the lighting.

How did you come to pick AIC? Why do you favor it?

I ACTUALLY think it has MORE noise when paused, but while the footage is playing, it looks fine. I don't understand why that happens, but I've notice the same affect when I pause HD movie trailers online. The only time the HV20 has more noise is under low light conditions. If you looked at the posted footage, there was NO way the HV20 could handle those conditions and look as clean as the HMC150 footage. If you put the HV20 next to the HMC150 in a shoot out that had TONs of light, you would be hard pressed to say the HMC150 is actually better. But then that's my opinion with ANY camera if you had a lot of light to sculpt with.

Here is footage with more motion that I took today. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQIcKYzO5WI&fmt=22)

I have not done any sporting events. Are you shooting sporting events that are outdoors or indoors? That would make a huge difference in deciding to get this camera. There are many factors that play a role into getting this camera. I got this camera to shoot events like weddings and the occasional short film. It's VERY flexible in that sense. If you're ONLY doing outdoor sporting events, then I really don't see why you would want to upgrade to the HMC150 when the HV20 does a great job at it. Are you trying to fix something that is not broken? :)

I am VERY close to buying one of these. Any real life comparisons would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I can help you more if I know more details about what you're trying to shoot. Overall, I LOVE this camera WAY more than the HV20. In fact, I like it $2300 more. :)

It sounds to me like you're missing a step in your process. If you go to Toast to Convert, you can drag your MTS files on the right side.

Then when you push the BIG red button to convert, it pulls up a dialogue box.

Device: Change to "Quicktime Movie"
Quality: Set to "Custom" then push the "change" button. Then ANOTHER dialogue box pops up. Under SETTINGS, choose Apple ProRes 422 and changed the size to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 which ever one you're using. (I'm guessing this is the step you're missing)

Change the SOUND to Apple Lossless at Best Quality and make sure your RATE frequency is set to 48 khz or else your audio MIGHT go out of sync. Most music is set to 44.1 kHz, but Audio for video is generally 48 kHz.

Press Convert and you should be all set to go!

I edit in FCP because it's VERY flexible. iMovie is Apple's free program that will convert the MTS files to editable quicktime movies. I hear iMovie is pretty user friendly. I THOUGHT I read somewhere that you can edit AVC HD natively, but I've yet to try.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

What exactly is on your rig?

I have Brevis35 with a Nikon 50mm lens in the photo. And in front of that is the Redrock Micro Matte Box. I just need a follow focus and my rig will be complete.

I'm still on FCS1 (FCP5) so I dont have Prores. To me I feel AIC is the next best thing and the file size is about half of what i was getting with DVCProHD.

i use compressor. it comes with final cut studio when you buy the program. These are some tutorials that might help.

Maybe you are on crack. :Drogar-Love(DBG):

If you have Final Cut Pro, the codec should show up. If it still frustrates you, then you can try using AIC. Works pretty well if you ask me. I think there are very little differences between AIC and Apple ProRes 422 from what my eyes can see.

Try getting iMovie to convert the AVC HD for you. Then export the converted files to your NLE of choice. Good luck.
