So I've got the 170 and a good backpack for it but now I realize the next essential piece of equipment is a decent tripod.

What do you guys recommend?

Also, what other equipment do you consider to be bare bones required for any kind of filming?

The Libec LS38 tripod system seems to be a favourite (although there are a lot of people that like the Bogen offerings)
Don't skimp on the tripod though (unless you are doing only static shots) you'll instantly notice how much better your shots will be if you use proper kit.
Personally I like the Miller SOLO sticks with DS10 head - spendy, but light and superb performers.

As for what else you'll probably need:

UV filter to protect your lens - this is a must-have

A good microphone to suit your style of shooting - lavs or shotguns usually are popular choices - remember that viewers are forgiving with sh!tty images, they aren't so with bad audio.

I'd recommend getting a large circular reflector too - great to have in your kit to help alleviate bad lighting, or even light a scene on the cheap :)

I got a cheap Matthews fluid head and its been great! Build quality has a little bit to desire, but for the price, unbeatable! Holds my HVX no prob and smoooth. Comes with carrying case and all!

Also, if I'm looking for versatility should I buy a shotgun mic before I get a Lav?
