When I place a fuzzy windscreen over my 4073a shotgun mic, the fuzzy business peeks into my viewfinder and wrecks the shot. There isn't much flexibility with regard to positioning the mic on the HVX, unfortunately, but short of buying a new mic and/or detaching it from the camera (ideally I want to keep it connected to the camera body right where it is, but higher), what can I do to make the fuzzy end of the mic not visible in the shot?

buy the rode shock mount, its $50, and is much better than the camera mount, and puts the mic further back.

I've got the same mic, same camera with rycote softie. Works fine with stock mic bracket, although if I don't watch it the mic will creep into the shot. Make sure windscreen is on the mic fully, then backed up all the way to the mic bracket on the camera.
