IR focusing

My 430ex speedlight transmits an infrared beam to focus really well in extreme darkness however, I am not able to use it without firing the flash.

Will a device like the one below work with a DSLR in order to focus? Even if it does work, will I end up with tons of infra-red light in my shot?

1st impressions I wouldn't think so because it may interfere with the color temp of the photo since that IR light in on all the time. Your flash shoots out an intermittent light setting the exposure length and cuts on & off before the image it taken.
