View Full Version : How do I Display 720P on a 480i Monitor?

I use my HVX with my handy Marshall monitor. I just bought a Sony PVM 8045Q 450 line 480i monitor with component inputs as a Director's monitor.

I figured out quite fast that the 720P component will not work on the Sony (squiggles everywhere), but it will display 720P if I use the 480i output selection in the HVX menu. BUT, the Marshall LCD looks terrible with the 480i signal. I want the 720 sharpness so I can use it to focus.

What I want to do is have the HVX sending 720P to my Marshall and then use the outputs from the Marshall to my Sony as a Director's Monitor.

Does anyone know of a cheap option?
I see some downconverters on the market but they are CRAZY expensive.
Is there a small box that converts 720/1080P to 480i?

Aja makes converters that do what you want but they are not cheap.

I thought I was not going into the settings deep enough when I was shooting 720 the other day and my little 4:3 TV that I use as a monitor was squeezing my image. I just finished the recording like that for that day and thought I would just check the camera settings later. Was not aware that I needed something else to convert the feed.

Well, you've got to down-convert no matter what. Why can't you simply come out of the composite video out to the NTSC SD monitor?

I thought that the HVX only put out a signal to the Component, or the composite.
Not both....

It is either component OR composite. Not both on the outputs of the HVX200.

~Bump~ I am looking for a way to do something similar. Does the V-R70P-HDA downres for you. Can I use component and put out a 480i signal from the svideo or composite?

Thanks guys.
