FCP to Motion changes the image from 16:9 to 4:3

I'm currently editing an SD movie that was shot in 16:9 format. When I export a file from FCP to Motion for effect changes it appears in FCP in 4:3 format. It looks correct when I'm in motion, I've checked the project properties and they are correctly set to 720x480, but when I go back to FCP the entire image has been squished down to 4:3 with either black bars on the left and right or the image underneith it sticking out on the sides. If I go back into motion and set the size to 960x480 it works, but I it's a bit of a pain to do and doesn't allow me to edit something right in the middle of the shot without including the entire shot in the edit which I also try to avoid. I know I'm missing something, but I've gone through all the menus and settings I can find. Any ideas?

Have you tried simply rechecking the anamorphic checkbox in the clip's item properties. It's probably just being misinterpreted by FCP.

I'd also check the pixel aspect ratio.
