I have a sony Z1 and premiere pro 2.0. I had shot a commercial for a beer company and want to capture it. The problem is that my system recognizes the camera and all but does not allow me to capture. When I press the play button from the capturing window the footage gets played on the camera and not on the system... It is a wierd thing. Help me out and like I said its real urgent!

From what I remember you should be recording the HDV footage to your hard drive but you will not see it playing back in Premiere like you would with SD DV.
Once you capture you should be able to see it in the timeline.

If you down convert from HDV to DV via the camera's firewire you will see it playing back as you capture in Premiere.

Premiere sucks for capturing HDV. Download HDVsplit and use that instead.

But the problem is that I tried it on CS3 and on FCP and they both were no help! I want to know one thing. Can a footage be shot on a mini DV and the camcorder is set on the HDV mode. I did this. It allows you to shoot and playback the video. But transferring seems to be the problem~

See Huy Vu's post above. Download HDVsplit. Premiere doesn't allow preview when capturing HD, and it doesn't have scene detection, yet a free program that's been around for years does. Go Adobe!

Premiere sucks for capturing HDV.

It Does Not. I've been capturing HDV from both my JVC HD 100 and my Canon XH A1 in PP 2 (and now in PP CS4 ) without any trouble for over two years. Set up your project with presets that match your footage. I dont own a Z1 but for my JVC and Canon I had to down load HDV presets from the Adobe site and set up my project with the presets. It helps to have the camera on and set to VTR mode before powering up the computer. There might be other menu output settings in your camera that might have to be set. You should be able to see the video play back inside your capture window. It will disappear during capture ( but you can monitor playback on your camera LCD ) Good Luck.

It Does Not.

Premiere will capture HD. But there's no preview and no scene detect. It's HDV capture is certainly crippled compared to other editors, and compared to HDVsplit, which is free.

I agree that if you can't capture there is a setting that is off. Make sure the camera and capture settings are the same. You want HD output through firewire and HDV capture within Premiere. But like Huy said, why bother when you can use HDVsplit and get better functionality.
