I need some help please:
I am new to HVX and FS 100 and want to shoot in 720 25 PN
I only got it to work ONCE ! now whenever I select under recording: 720 /25PN the FW 1394 in display goes off and it doesnt record anymore to FS 100.
UB mode is FRM RATE
1394 is set to BOTH
in FS 100 setup VFR is set to 25p
recording is set to Quicktime 25 PN
but whenever I switch the HVX to 25 PN the FW 1394 is turned OFF !!
can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong?
any help highly appreciated!

Thanks ! I found the hint way back in the Focus manual reading it all through last night: No 1394 when in 720 PN, because its a DVCPRO 100 codec in FS 100 and is set by FS 100, NOT the HVX. VFR should be off otherwise NO SOUND. While I was trying to stay DVCPro 50 720 pn. Looks like the P2 does it as a DVCPro 50 codec and the FS 100 as a full HD codec? Have to check more....so little time.... so much to do ....
No. FS-100 can record any DVC PRO codec, as long it is selected in the FS-100 menus. There is no such thing as DVCPRO 50 720PN. DVCPRO 50 is only 480i or P. Native mode has to be selected in the FS-100, but not in the HVX. Whatever resolution is selected in the HVX has to be selected in the FS-100.

Thanks Jeff, I am testing here and shot some test footage with HVX set to 720/25p & with FS 100 set to DVCPRO 50
recording directly as Quicktime, the resulting files say:
Dimensions: 1280x720
DVCPRO HD 720p50
This gives me double recording time than HD on the FS 100 and is good enough for my project.
I wonder how I could get it to record DVCPRO HD 720p25
I gave up on the native 720 25 pn cause its ONLY possible in HD and eats up double space.

I'm afraid there are so many errors in your strategy and concepts that it's hard to know where to start. I'll try to help:
You cannot shoot HD in DVCPRO 50 mode. 1280X720 is 720 HD, 720/50p is 50 frames per second--this is DVCPRO HD.
Even if you select DVCPRO 50 on the FS-100 menu, it will sense the output resolution from the camera and change its mode accordingly.
If you want 720/25p, set the camera accordingly.
When shooting 720/25p Native, the actual bit rate is closer to 40Mbps, so actually it uses LESS memory than standard def. DVCPRO 50.
Here is what I recommend:
If you want to shoot HD, select 720/25P on the HVX camera, select 720/25P Quicktime Native on the FS-100. This will give you close to 2.5 minutes per Gb vs. 1 min. per Gb in non-native DVCPRO HD.
Disclaimer-I have never used 50p or 25p, as I am in the USA.

Thanks Jeff, I am grokking slowly but steadily:-) You are right: the FS 100 switches to HD automatically anyway, I realized.....I just decided to buy some more harddrives and shoot in HD.

timbook2,
The great thing about a FireStore FS-100 when using DVCPRO HD Native mode at 720/24P is that you will get over 10 hours of record time with a 250Gb version, over 6 hours with a 160Gb, and 4 hours with a 100Gb original model, which are easy to buy used for $1000.00 USD.

Ok I figured it all out and am finally able to do all recordings in all settings, thanks for all the help and yes reading the manual til the end helped:-)
Im all set for this trip, thanks for all your patience, I hope you understand my panicky posts when I have so little time to learn this new beast before jumping in the warm water ....did some time-lapse clouds this morning, checked all frame rates and file sizes and am good to go. 3 more days and Im flying to India.
