nNovia is about to release a new digital deck ( hard-drive recorder with removeable MediaPacs ) in about two weeks: nNovia ProFlex 100 Digital Deck

This new drive supports DV / HDV and Panasonic DVC Pro 25/50, DVCPro HD 100 720P/1080i formats.

The basic deck with AC adapter sells for $1,799 US and a 120 GB MediaPac sells for $299. Hard-drive based MediaPacs are available in 80 / 100 / 120 / 160 GB sizes, and Solid-state MediaPacs are available in 16 / 32 GB sizes. Rechargeable battery packs sell for $119.

I hope that nNovia consider larger Solid-State based MediaPacs, as 128 GB OCZ Solid-State laptop drives are selling for less than $500 in Canada. ( with rebates )

Hi Dingo,

Let's hope they do a better job of product support on these newer units, I have one of their now older 80gig A2D V-Mount recorders, it will not be upgraded with current firmware I was told by Nnovia support to be able to shoot DV50 or MXF files, they simply don't want to know.
At the price point of over $3200 I thought an upgrade path with firmware would be offered, I was wrong...Other than that it can only shoot DV25 resolution, it works well.

...It might be that the electronics in the old units aren't designed to support DV50 or MXF formats.

I don't mind selling old gear to replace it with new gear if it makes my life easier, and saves me some money. ( the cost difference to go the all P2 route is huge )

I've heard that the nNovia units are more reliable than the FireStore equivalent, and for me the removeable MediaPacs are icing on the cake. So I am definitely sold on this solution.

Hello Dingo,

All that is required is simple Firmware, my unit is just two years old. who considers all their gear redundant after two years ?. as manufacturers they want to push Newer products, not support "first of" products, plus no up-date path is a tad slack also, how would Apple go is they did not make their software to suit the range of Mac's ?.

Good luck with the new model, you can be their "test pilot".

Actually, when I tried to have nNovia do firmware updates to the newest specs,
it caused problems for playback through my DSR-450WS. Turns out there were
also some chip changes involved. I made them put the old firmware and chips
back. They do offer an HDV update for 2006 vintage QC products, so it's not
like they didn't try. Obviously, HDV is DV25, so not that hard to do.

If you look at the various Focus Enhancement FireStore HDD's, you'll see that
they have a different model for every format/brand, no one model that works
for all.

Hello Dino,

they did not tell me that, thank's for the heads up on that issue. I only use it now for the long form jobs behind my DSR570, it does work well also behind my SPX800 pana but I have to down tune the Pana to DV Resolution out via firewire, that is a dissapointment as the cam is much better at DV50.

Maybe a "conversion" for early product buyers would keep em coming back, not intimate to them, "it's all over for you baby, just buy another one".

cheers

If anyone is thinking of upgrading and wants to sell their QC A2D (has to have the analog input for this to work for me), please contact me...

Hi charles,

I have one and use it as a back-up now..for long form shoots be it only at DV res, it has the analogue ins n outs...
They are now super ceded and can be bought from some dealers, we have a dealer here in OZ that have a couple of Brand New units left in stock they are chucking out for $1500AUD, that's about $1000US, you may get one in US ?, that would save you freight etc.
good luck.
