View Full Version : Those in favour of a "Critics Choice" award....

This is what I propose through the use of outside promotion.
I (with much help) can get an impressive list of movie critics'/reviewers who might be able to grant us here at DVXuser a special "Critics Choice" award.
Much like what happened in L.A. for TimeFest.
They would look at the top finalists chosen by the Members here at DVXuser and grant a special "Critics' Choice" award for their pick as best film. Hopefully even a top 3 list with reviews for each film. Who knows, maybe even a professional interview and a published column could follow. The promotion would be a benefit to the site here as well as to the Director.
So... just answer the public poll.

Who knows, we could even receive better actor critiques. Something this site is in desperate need of but expected considering we are mostly filmmakers and not actors.

I'd like to be on the panel :)Sorry, Dude. Just professional critics with no direct links to DVXuser.
You still get to help determine who goes before the panel though.
Thanks, guys! Keep the votes coming.

thanks... :huh:Not knocking you, dude. You already get a vote though so that pretty much counts you out.
If you start reviewing movies as a professional with no ties to DVXuser I'll add you to the list.

Mike approached me with this idea yesterday and so i showed him my top secret list of Filmmakers and DIY Activists. These are people on the cutting edge of the DIY movement with a direct interest in the kind of low/no-budget DIY filmmaking that is the heart and soul of DVXFest. All of them are active bloggers as well, so their involvement as a panel of judges for a kind of jury prize would easily raise the level of awareness for this fest as they blog about it.
i also have a short list of critics that might be interested in reviewing some of the winners and possibly being on the jury panel too. but anyway, these names added to mike's list creates a unique opportunity to bring the right kind of attention to indie filmmaking's "best kept secret".

It's very hard to critique acting performances for the shorts, at least for me to do so. I commented on 2 films (acting-wise) this fest (well, 3 since I combined 2 for Mike. :)). At first, I thought I really upset Zaza with what I'd written, which was the other one. But it turns out I didn't.
Acting is very very subjective and some people might like a performance, but others might think it's awful. Being an actor, I would tend to be a bit harsh if I were to be honest about my comments...

The main thing is... if DVXuser gives this the "OK" it will allow further promotion/exposure for your hard work.

not typically the best way to put a plan in motion if it relates to something that takes place on this site. You should bring it to the administration first. Then once we have discussed it, and come to some terms, a poll by all means would be appropriate (though unecessary, b/c we already know most everyone would want something like this)
Otherwise (and I'm sincerely not angry or trying to accuse or start anything here), it can come across in not so good ways to us and we may jump to conclusions. Just a general fyi :)

JasonCool. Sorry about that. I just figured since outside promotion was now allowed that this wouldn't be crossing a line. My bad.
We'll take it offline and talk to you once we get our ducks in a row.
Thanks,
Mike

For the record, this is a great idea, and we're certainly not trying to stomp anybody out, and don't want to discourage folks from bringing their ideas and resources to the table to help make the fests better. In fact, we welcome that. That is what it is all about.
We (DVXuser) just have to be careful that just anyone doesn't come up with an idea and decide they are going to do it, etc, etc... No free for alls. We have to maintain things to some degree. Certain things can be done as individuals. Other things need to be handled in an "official" capacity.
Now, that we've heard what this is all about, it's certainly a great idea and will build on the first attempt at a panel during timefest, as well as throw another nice idea into the mix, and we will certainly try to make this happen.
Hope you guys understand my intent here for what it is. There just has to be some protocol, and a proper way to handle things. Otherwise, things could get really out of hand really fast. Particularly as the fests continue to grow.

I don't see anything bad or negative here, so I'm picking 'yes'.
I'm actually surprised, considering the fests and members work here, that something like this hasn't already been...mmm what's the word...done.
