So we shot a feature on the HPX 500 and want to color correct in Color. I was told not to color correct the DVC Pro HD footage, but to export as prores 422, then import that version and recut the entire project, then color correct in color. Is this the correct way to do it?

I mean if possible, I'd capture to ProRes. What's your budget? Are you going to have money for light trucks and camera villages? What's the scoop on that end first.

Joe,
It sounds like the shoot is over, I don't think he needs light trucks at this point.

You don't have to do it that way if it doesn't fit your workflow. You can cut using DVCPro HD then send the finished sequence(s) to Color for color correction and export the renders as ProRes. You'll get the benefit of having high quality ProRes renders, without having to convert all your footage to ProRes in the beginning.
There are benefits to doing all your editing and color correction using ProRes from the start, but it really depends on your workflow and how comfortable you are with working with ProRes.

Yeah, shoot is over. Movie is cut. I was told by a respected colorist in the industry that you don't want to color correct DVC Pro HD footage because it will come out much better at 1920 X 1080. That's why he wants me to convert it to prores. Is there any quality loss when transferring to prores? Thanks!

You don't need to convert the footage before sending to Color. Once video goes into Color, it becomes full raster 4:4:4. You just need to set the output codec as ProRes.
If you want to convert it before, you can use the Media Manager to just convert the footage in the sequence.
