I don't know about the "takes dslr into medium-format terrain" punchline. At ~25 megapixels they are maybe 1/4 of the way into medium format film resolution. Still a very cool camera though.

Hummm, it doesn't say anything about the HI ISO specs that the D3 & D700 can do. It actually goes lower though, to 50 rather than 100. Seems to me that cramming all those pixels killed some of the special low light abilities that the D3 & D700 had going for them. I think I'd rather stick with the low light power than the pixels for my taste.

I can kind of buy the medium format claim. Obviously it's not the same, but it does give you a the same pixel count as some of the lower end MF Digital backs. It would be interesting to see if the D3X files have the same kind of post production latitude that the MF digital backs have.

Looks like no HD Movie Mode either, which is great in my opinion.

I can't see Canon or Nikon putting movie mode in their flagship models, not without massive improvement over what is offered in the 5DM2

They'll add it [movie recording] at some point or another as more full time photojournalists (and other professionals) are asked to record video as well.

It's a nice feature to have, but personally, if I were to get a flagship camera, I'd only care that it has the very best in photo capabilities. Couldn't care less at how good the video is.

Probably talking about digital and not film medium format. P+ series from Phase One ranges from 16 to 60mp, P series is 16 to 39mp and H series was 6 to 22mp. So you could say that Nikon is reaching into that range in terms of resolution only.

Reading the data on this puppy makes my spine tingle but I'd have to have shoots booked with Bowie, Jagger, Queen Elizabeth and the good lord himself to bring the price up at the dinner table and even then it would fall out of the sky like a mile wide asteroid. I have to say though, I'm drawn toward it like a Magpie to something shiny:)

I don't think I'd have use for this unless I knew my stuff was going to be printed as big as a 9 foot window ad or billboard you see at the mall.

Even at 12 mp... I find it a pain in the ass removing peachfuzz and blemishes enough as it is... let alone something twice that size... ungh...

Personally, I rather would have the high ISO capabilities. Though, this would be a fantastic camera under controlled lighting.

But for 8K, I think I'd get a 400 f/2.8 lens and a decent lighting package instead.

The selling/price point of this and the Canon 1D cameras are based on reliability and durability. Yes it has a high megapixel count but the people buying these cameras understand that the difference between 12 and 24 megapixels is almost nothing. Really all of its other features can and will be included in the series of cameras below it but this will always have a better construction.
