While I was checking out the new scene files that Panasonic has posted, i started to think about something that would totally eliminate the uproar on the current P2 pricing, and cause some heads to really turn towards the Panasonic P2 camera lineup... here's what I was thinking, Can it be done? I'm not sure but if it can I think that this would be absolutely awesome.

What i started to think about was if there was a way for Panasonic to create a firmware/hardware update to allow backing up P2 contents from the P2 cards to the SD card slot! and to do this internally.... Imagine, for HPX500 users such as myself.... throwing a 64GB (high quality card mind you!) into the SD slot on my HPX... going into the OTHER FUNCTIONS tab, and clicking BACK UP P2 TO SD SLOT.... hit OK and BANG! I have backed up my entire contents on to a 64GB SD Card.... in however long it took to do it.... probably not as long as dumping via USB 2.0 to a laptop.

I think that this would solve alot of problems... Archiving, Delivery, and long form shooting... We (users) would be winners and Panasonic will continue to sell P2 cards, because we need the high data rate that the P2 allows to shoot, and i'm sure that their (Panny's) major buyers (Big companies/News crews etc...) would still buy and utilize the P2 cards only.... and perhaps the indie/ small company crowd would not be buying as much P2 but then, Panasonic can continue to price the cards where they like! and the indie/small companies .... have a very viable option..... what do you think? Jan? Barry? can this be done? Comments anyone?

slowly writing to the SD card during shooting would be even better. It just catches up between takes. By the time the P2 card is full the SD card would be almost backed up. I say zero chance in hell this ever happening, but we can dream. My HVX has an SD slot too! :D

I don't know if they'll let you back up to the SD slot, but they already have the functionality to let you back up to an external hard disk, and they provide the functionality to use a USB On-The-Go system as well.

It could be done but it'll be a cold day in hell before they do that and we would still have to buy a new camera.

There is a cheap firewire cf card recorder that sony makes for the Z7 that records video through the firewire port, it also works on canon cameras. It cost $700, it would be nice if someone made one for the hvx's or one that dosen't cost $3500-$5000 but something in the $500-$1000 price range.

Are there any solid state cf card recorders out there that have a firewire input and a data rate over 100mb/s besides the expensive ones I mentioned in the above post?
