What's the deal with certain cam's shooting what they CLAIM is HD on what looks like miniDV tape?

And is this possible? Yeah, I know the HVX can't do that... Can OTHERS?

And if so, how the hell do you capture it?

I've had friends say it was a nightmare, and now I'm faced with that option (someone saying they've got HD footage, but it's on what sounds like a miniDV tape)

A friend tried this, and his HVX couldn't even preview the footage! The videographer had to literally bring in his camera and capture it to my friend's laptop... And even then, there was alot of defects in the footage!!!

Again, I'm not just talking about the HVX... I want to know if OTHER cam's are recording HD on what appears like minDV tapes??????

Well it depends on what your definition of "HD" is, but if its a resolution of 1920x1080 then any HDV cam records HD to DV tape, like my canon XH-A1. Yes you need another HDV device in order to capture it. (I know its actually 1440x1080)

Wow. I could've swore I read somewhere on this subforum that "HD can't be recorded to minDV tape!!!" or something to that effect.

I hope this wasn't just an "HVX cheerleader" response.

Key word here is HDV... Thats your problem. It is not HD It is HDV. Not DVCPRO or AVCHD or anything else. And yes its a nightmare. Even though DVCPRO HD is currently an industry standard and really easy to work with it is still compressed. Not as bad as HDV but still compressed.

JVC, Most Sonys, Sanyos, pretty much everything you have ever seen on the market in the last few years which claims HD , but is really HDV. Even the Gy110 etc. If it dosent go direct to HDD or P2 chances are its HDV.

You are correct.

HDV is HD. It's a resolution, not a compression or a bitrate.

HOWEVER, the flavors of HD recorded by the HVX200/170 can't be recorded to Mini-DV tape.
