Hi,
Who has experience with editing of raw HVX 720P material on a Macbook Pro? Can the Macbook Pro handle all the workflow?

I have no problem editing from a macbook pro with 2 gigs of ram onto an external lacie drive hooked up via fw400. I even have a model from a couple years back

MacBook isn't a good solution at all.
MacBookPro should be just fine.

+1 for MacBook Pro.

So there's no problem at all? Both with Avid and FCP?
I am planning to do a larger project (lets say 15 min) in 720p, shot on P2 cards. I want to edit it on a laptop...

I sometimes edit 720 on a 20 inch 2.66 imac with 2 gig ram....and it handles it fine.
Not as good as my G5, but still good.

I can't speak for Avid, but I use FCP for all my projects, from hour-long docs to 30-second TV spots and have never had a problem with P2 footage. I have used both P2CMS and FCP to import P2 footage, and have used both Raylight (to edit using the original .mxf files) and FCP to edit and they both perform as advertised.

Avid what?
No mention of it in your initial post.
And what are you describing when you refer to "raw HVX 720P material?"

I have Avid 3.0.5 and FCP 6.0.5 on my MacBook Pro. ON separate partitions, of course (they have different system and QT requirements). Work fine. Heck, I had the same versions on my Powerbook G4...no problems.

I mostly use Avid Express Pro 5.7. And with "raw HVX 720P material" I mean the uncompressed files that come directly from the P2 card.

I don't think Avid Express works with Native P2 files. Only the later Media Composer lines, like 2.8 and 3.0. Upgrade now...the price is VERY low to upgrade and the features you get...it is a great upgrade.

As HVX shoot DVCProHD 720, which is an I frame codec, the system required to edit doesnt need to be so processor intensive as a long gop codec such as HDV. Macbook Pro is fine. A straight macbook (not pro) could handle a simple edit.

i've done a great deal of work in avid and fcp on a macbook pro. cutting is a breeze, real time transitions, etc. like anything else though if u do something more intensive you'll have to render. real time color correction wasn't an issue either in both programs.

Thanx allot. I am now thinking its a serious option to buy a Macbook Pro and do my project on that, instead of buying a big PC like the HP XW8200. Being mobile would be a big plus and the XW8200 sure is not...

Avid XPress had support for P2 files from about version 5.2.3 or so. Not every format was fully supported but most were.

I've been editing 1080 stuff on an older G4 1.67 GHz laptop with no problems.
