I’ve just posted my first film shot on a production 5DmkII purchased yesterday in Beijing You can see it here
http://www.vimeo.com/2327058
I’m testing the 5DmkII to use mainly as a video camera using my Nikon glass.

Great stuff  Especially like the nice use of the tilt-shift lense. I can hardly believe this is ungraded, it looks so good :)

How are you mounting the Nikon glass on the Canon body?
If you're using old Manual Focus and Manual Aperture lenses, then you're getting over one of the problems with the current Canon EF lenses - the focus ring is totally unconnected from the actual focus - makes pulling focus almost impossible.

Whats the handheld look like on that thing? Is there a shoulder mount? Is there a way to give it some weight for steady hand held shots? Handle on top? XLR mounts for decent audio? Is the Vimeo compression making it look jittery and video-ish? It's got some potential. Nice colors, and depth of field.

kdawg it's a SLR camera So no there's no shoulder mount, no there's no handle Yes, the canon has mic input, but not XLR just stereo (3.5mm ?) jack You could use a stabilised IS (canon) or VR (nikon) lens, but they have lots of disadvantages.

A lot of the clips from the 5D on the web look very crunchy - with crushed blacks. Especially in the Zacuto comparison. I dont know what's coming straight out of the camer - the stuff on vimeo is very compressed - but I was wondering if 5d mk2 owners can comment on this.
How is the black gamma/shadow detail compared to say an ex1/F900R or a RED?
Understandably, if you shoot in low light with high iso, which are the lighting conditions of a lot of these vimeo videos, then you're going to lose a lot of details in the blacks.
It would be really good to see the first DRAMATIC videos shot with the 5d mk2 where the DP is trying cull more out of the shadow area with his/her lighting rather than these on-the-street type of montages. But that will just a matter of time I'm sure.

Most 5D footage on the Web is shot using the in-cam Picture Styles and, as a consequence, it tends to exhibit crushed blacks and harsh highlights, while the 5D for sure can do more and better. So ... how to exploit better the LATITUDE of the 5D? One answer is to start using the Picture Styles Editor provided for free by Canon in order to create flatter Picture Styles for better post-processing, which neither crush the blacks nor blow the highlights. It may take some time before 5D video shooters learn how to use this software, which has great potential....but yet does not tell us 100% clearly how predictable and repeatable effects can be obtained for video. We still need some systematic test of the latitude of the 5D with different Picture Styles. The Zacuto big shootout test is, in my humble opinion, of no use for assessing the 5d's abilities and is, as far as I can judge, particularly unfair to this camera. (I own a Sony PMW EX1 and the 5D mark II).

I've been using some picture style editor profiles and getting better results. Have a look here http://www.vimeo.com/2573561

There are cheaper ones on ebay.

Dan, that's some great material. It doesn't matter what you're shooting on, its visually (and emotionally) compelling. I envy your globe trotting! Im stuck here in LA eating too much Mexican food. Oh the glamor!
But yeah, I'm glad to know EX1 owners have good things to say about the 5DMk2, since EX1's actually have very good latitude for a 1/2" video camera.

Did you download the attached 720P file (located at the bottom right) or just watched the compressed vimeo?
All you have to do is sign up for a vimeo account and you can actually download the actual file that was uploaded to vimeo.

Thank you for the footage Dan! Makes me want to reconsider buying the newly announced HF S 10 for a 5DMK2. I recognize Houhai :-)
