yesterday i was at one of the 5 lakes here shooting a scene for my current project... of course its public property, and it was a nice 95 degree day so there were alot of people at the park. but it is a large park so i went along the lake and found my own little place to shoot about 2-500 feet away from anyone else.. ... so about half way through the shoot... some kid and his girlfreind walk over and sit down right..and i mean right next to the area we had set up..right in the way..i looked at him like ..you are an idoit and i hate you.. but they just sat there like they thought they were going to be on tv or somthing.. needless to say i moved all the equipment over to grab an angle that didnt include their dumb rear ends in it.. and had to limit my shots for the rest of the scene.. ooohhhhh i just wanted to choke him..anyway .. people stop and stare alot, and ask stupid questions like.. "are you guys recording somthing?" ..."can i be in it?" but this is a new level of stupid.. the worst part..they spoke no english so they didnt understanfd we wanted them to leave.. aggghhhh...
oh well .. its their park too. i got some good shots anway..
anyone else have this type of issue lately?

happens all the time, specially when you are recording in the ghetto. That's why its worth the 80 bucks a day to hire someone as "security" for the set or ask someone you know, even if it is a public location and people have the right to be in your frame if you have security go over and talk to them most people can be cool. If you dont know anyone to be the strong arm, goto the local nightclub and ask the bouncer if he wants to make a few extra bucks during the day.

Loser - (BTW - you don't stike me as one given your great posts) where are you located? Just curious...

I need people (extras actually) for my next production. Problem is, in Los Angeles where I am, everyone's so jaded they aren't willing to stand around for hours in the hopes that the back of their head will make it into someone's short film. Not even my friends will do it - they all want lines or they're not interested!

I bet you guys outside of CA don't get the police stopping to ask you if you have a permit to film and informing you that they can write a $1800 ticket and that you better vamoos pretty darn quick.

heh heh.

Really. We've pulled off more than a few guerilla shoots. One in a shopping mall because we needed people to exchange a talisman in a public place and the script called for a food court. *We had a diversion team attract security on the opposite side of the mall, then we rushed in, took position and shot about 2 minutes of footage and then split.

We had a handful of spotters spread out to notify us of security movement by text messaging.

Damn this stuff is fun *:)

lol.. I woulda liked to film you filming that :)

Hey,
I'm in Asheville, North Carolina. I was working on feature a couple of months ago. One of the crew would step out in the side street we were shooting on and stop traffic during the shot. Police showed up and asked him what he was doing. They were concerned about his safety so they stopped traffic for him. We did not have a permit and they knew that. I love this town!

im in madison wisconsin- in the state of WI you dont need a permit to film unless you are in a state park, or some high level government building(even then the permit is really cheap)- as usual though you need the permission of any private property owner to shoot on their property. the police couldnt really care less about any filming downtown mad city, because its mostly college campus, and theres always stuff happening there..madison is so liberal.. yesterday i went to the start of the ironman triathalon dowtown- some news guy was filming with a pd150 on a steadicam jr---(they have to shoot from the back of a motorcyle alot for when they are filming them on the bicycling portion of the race..) anyway looking at him with that thing..made me think to myself.. ha ha! my cams better than your cam :)

All the time. I really need to control myself.

Our towns are cool! I can get things done here so much faster then Los Angeles (spent ten years there).

Just tell them "I'm shooting a mayonnaise commercial" and they go away.

One of my friends/DPs says that works all the time on big and small shoots.
