Do you all have your DVX100 camera and other equipment insured? I have my car and home insurance through the same company and they told me that they would only cover up to $1,000 for my video equipment which to them includes stuff like my DVD player, VCR, etc. A couple of people told me to get either RIDER or a FLOATER to my existing policy to get the full amount of all my stuff insured. What do you all have? I want my gear to be insure here at home, in the car, or if I am on location.

Speaking of location shoots, how many of you have separate insurance for shooting on location?

Two different parts to this "on location" piece.

There is the personal insurance for anything not at your home or in your car. I was told that homeowners insurance typically does not cover that.

Then there is the "I'm shooting a movie on location" type of insurance and this is completely different. This is to protect you from people being hurt during the shoot, property damage caused by the shoot or equipment theft or damage.

That is the limit of my knowledge - seek professional help.

Yes, you need to talk to your Insurance company, but most insurance companies will insure anything. Like you mentioned you can get a Floater that will cover a certain amount of equipment outside your normally insured areas.

The problem I'm running into, is that homeowners has limits as to how much they will insure. The other problem is that trade associated companies will insure your still equipment and not your audio equipment. Then like Screech says, there's liability insurance, not to mention insurance to protect you against a (should I say it?) botched job.

You don't want to be hung out to dry, if you got a faulty tape etc. The people I'm trying to get to give me a quote also say it depends on whether you work out of your home, or whether you have a studio.

good point scott. There is a big difference if you are looking for personal insurance or something to cover your company. There is a place in NY that does special commercial insurance for Indy filmakers on a budget, but I cant remember the name.

Zoomforce.....If you EVER recall the name, let me know. This project of getting insurance is beginning to be a royal pain in the butt.

Thanks much! I'll be calling them. Sound like they have what I'm looking for, unless they think I'm small potatos.

My home and auto insurance is with Allstate and I have an appointment to sit down and discuss my issues with an agent this week. I just need some insurance that is going to cover the full cost of my equipment no matter where I go with it. I don't have a business so I cannot get business insurance.

DVX100SHOOTER, you have a business, you just need a name for it. You don't need a licence or anything like that, you just need to file with the IRS.

Somebody on another DVX newsgroup posted that he has his camera, equipment and computer system all totalling about $15,000 insured through State Farm for $36 a month. I am not sure if that is accurate but that is what he posted.
