22 NOVEMBER 2008 (4:00 PM) -
Alright, he just sent me the sig banner and I like it a lot. I think I am going to use a guitar in the film.
22 NOVEMBER 2008 (3:43 PM) -
Rodney just sent me his rendition of the poster and I think it kicks ass. I put it up in the first post but it may change because I am not sure if I will integrate a guitar into the story (as I originally planned to use a piano). That being said, this poster gave me some ideas for plot so we will see what happens. Thanks, Rodney! :)

Actually the original poster had a road in the background but I didn't want to go down to the street to take one of my own and I knew I had to get the thread up fast after they tried to cook me for dinner so I swapped that picture in. Rodney offered to take a go at a new one for me and I said he should so we will see what he comes up with. The current one was just inspired by the title, as I don't have much of a story yet. :)

Coincidentally I found this article from the summer Monterey Bay Aquarium Newsletter:
ARCTIC PICKPOCKET?
by Michelle West
The SPLASH ZONE PENGUIN CAM has become the third most popular web cam in the United States largely due to the antics of a squat (some would say dumpy) blackfooted penguin that keepers have dubbed "Nick the Thief." Shunned by the females in the exhibit, Nick the penguin seems to have developed both an animosity and penchant for revenge against the dominant males who control mating and food distribution. Nick has developed a technique whereby he blusters and squawks fiercely, which causes a raucus ruckus among the other males. In the ensuing confusion, Nick sneaks sardines from the rocky outcrop where the treats are usually kept under the watchful eye of a guard penguin.
People from all over the world have been glued to their screens watching the webcam (viewable at http://www.mbayaq.org/efc/efc_splash/splash_cam.aspx) to see the despicable Nick stirring up the place.
Of course, Nick the penguin's larceny does not always go unpunished. In fact, a group of larger blackfooted males brutally assaulted him when they cornered him against the cliff face that forms the backdrop of the exhibit.
It seems that Nick has been unopupular since the day he was introduced to the penguin community a year ago. When asked why the little guy is such a social pariah, keeper Denny Boyle said, "The damn bird showed up with all these mediocre scripts that he offered to the other penguins to make their short films with. Then, of course, none of them won any awards and they just got really pissed off at him -- especially because he would never shoot his own film. He just acted like 'I'm a big writer - Look at me.' It didn't go over well."

I knew that post was going to bring no good...no one in here for nearly 24 hours? What's wrong with you guys? Do you need a constant flow of either film news or entertaining photo-shopped pictures to keep you in here and happy? I have some of the former:
- I planned on meeting with some filmmaking friends of mine yesterday or today to discuss the possibility of a collaboration and perhaps even using some semi-nice equipment, but I have been dealing with other stuff and completely forgot. I am pushing that back until after the holiday weekend when I will hopefully have sent out the two first drafts I am working on for other people and maybe even established more of this script.
Until then, please allow the normal shenanigans to ensue...

Hehe. :) Well, since you asked, I might as well explain it (even though my fingers are still numb from standing outside in the cold for the last few hours watching my fellow students get raped in football and trying to hit on girls). Lane was my great-grandfather's last name, not my true, legal name (Schumaker). I decided to use that name because it is short and impossible to mispronounce and easy to remember. But, lately, I've been realizing it may have been more trouble than it was worth and it would probably be easier to just use my legal name for everything.
Therein lies the "conspiracy" from "ConspiracyPenguin" (not really, but it sounds valid, doesn't it?). :)
Oh, and thanks for stopping by Ted!
Jeff Anderson

Oh that's some decent reasoning there Nick. Really it is. Was hoping one of them was because you thought you were a super hero that could secretly fly, but I guess you cant win em all. You have a camera that Robbie gave you, you're a writer...so get off your duff (I think Penguins have duffs), put up an ad on Craigslist, find your actors & locations and shoot a film. You still have plenty of time to put a film together. No more excuses accepted.
I REALLY want to see you make a film P.
...if you don't, Rogan will have to "Unapprove" you & strip you of his seal....and as a Penguin you never want to blow a seal!

Wow...you guys had fun while I was busy and couldn't linger on DVXuser. Jeez, I was feeling homesick.
I actually talked to my friend today and he still wants to push ahead with this. I am going to write up the script soon and get in contact with my friend in IB Film who can probably borrow a camera for us to use.
I'll keep you updated.
PS: Rogan, don't get your hopes up too high...I write, that's what I'm good at. Anything else is pushing it.

Dear Friends,
As you well know, over the past several months, I have been very distracted and busy. I have not spent nearly as much time on this site as I used to, nor have I made anywhere near the same amount of bad jokes as I once did. All I can say is I am sorry that I have hid in my igloo so much as of late.
Further, throughout this fest, I have been flaky, at best. I had an extreme amount of trouble pulling things together, and in this thread I have been less than forthcoming with you. I tend to be an optimist, and I will not apologize for that. If I was not the way I am, I would have given up many months ago when personal issues created a divide within my once solid production team. Or when, time and time again, I failed to come up with an original concept. Or, even, when I realized that (with what I have) I could not possibly create a piece up to par with the other submissions, let alone with your expectations. But I did not. I stayed on the horse as she bucked about manically, and what do I have to show for it? A lot of scars, a lot of regrets, but no shame and no self-pity.
For now, this letter is all I have for you. Make of it what you will, but assume nothing. If I can get my act together I will have a special surprise for you all next weekend. Thank you, everyone, for your continued support and kind words. I have said from the beginning that I am a writer who can act, but I am not a filmmaker. That is not entirely true. If you gave me some talented people and good equipment, the result would be good, I am sure. But that is not without all of you pushing and helping me along the way. I am proud to be a part of this community and I am pleased that you still allow me to be. Without you all I would be nothing.
Thank you,
SparkyZa

Sorry to hear you won't be entering a film this time around. I'm new here, but from what I can tell you're a well respected member and everyone looks-up to you and your work. It's our loss (no pun) that we won't have your film so we can all learn from what I'm sure is one of the better filmmakers on the board. I hope you enter in the next one and raise the level even higher.

well I wouldn't go so far as to call him "respected", but sure, we're all disappointed the there's no film forthcoming from the Penguin.
We all need a little penguin, dontcha know....

I think you're just kidding. Could you lead me to some of his films? I can't seem to find any links to them? Or maybe I'm just not using the search feature correctly.

Who was the author of the Penguin biography you read? Whomever it was is a very kind person, haha. :)
Let me set the record straight: I am nowhere near as good a filmmaker as most on these boards. I am a writer of all mediums and I've been known to act from time to time but I have yet to actually film and submit a complete piece. I am a perfectionist, so things have to go just right for me to be happy, and that means a lot of set backs. I will churn one out, eventually, but, until then, I'll keep writing my many novels I have started.
Thank you for the kind words, nonetheless. :)

Thanks for all the support, guys, but this thing never got off the ground. What can you expect from a flightless bird, anyway? :) Thank you Rodney for lending me your talent and making my poster and sig banner, they are truly beautiful. I had a good time and I hope you did too, unfortunately, I'm going to have to leave it at that.
However, I have been in story talks with a few people and we have a good cast and crew ready to film a short piece either the second week of April or sometime over the Summer depending on how fast we can come up with a good plot and pull everything together. I will keep you updated on that as soon as I have details.
Thank you again, everyone, not only for being so gracious and welcoming but also for being so friendly and helpful. You are all class acts and I don't know what I would do without you as friends. Best of luck to everyone in the fest, I am genuinely looking forward to watching and proudly submitting my votes.
Be well,
