make friends.. walk around and shoot with your camera and show people the footage... post it online... if you are good people will find you.
Do you simply want to WORK in the industry, or get involved in productions?
If you want to get involved, then check around for local usergroups, or AV clubs (seriously). There's often screenwriter associations, filmmaker associations, etc. that are made up of professionals in the industry as well as people who are interested in the craft. If you can find no where else for information, a good place to start would be your local public access station. They often know of such groups/associations. Good luck!

Madcow
Don't you live in the OC, I mean Orange County?
I can think of no better way to 'get in' the industry than to take out these DVX's and make a kick ass film (ala stealart) ((at least I hope stealart is kick ass; the footage looked it))
Make a film, get in festivals, online, DVD, etc...
That's my plan anyway. I want to make films, not really work for others in the industry, except for the pain in the ass producers who are givig me money to make a film!
