What disappoints me is the fact that nobody made a TimeFest or TwilightFest tribute as is customary in the fests.

I was in the middle of making a TimeFest tribute (i made the LoveFest one that went over so well) but stopped because so many of the films would not import into FCP. it was pretty funny... on JDS's recommendation, it was set to Cyndi Lauper's Time after Time, then segued to a hard-hitting electronica version of the same song halfway through.

2 More trailers up... one last one with the missing videos. Some aren't behaving themselves right now so I'm trying to find a good solution on getting them converted.

An Enchanting Twist of Peccadilloes
Sixty Seconds

these files for some reason are giving trouble. Once i get them converted I should be able to wrap up the big trailer that includes EVERYONE and then include vimeo links for each of the trailers.

I actually have the "Please be a cat" line in there guys. it was one of the most memorable ones. I also have "She liked BACON" from "My Name is Harold Allen".

I was just drawing blanks on some of the other good ones and was hoping other people would have favorites. Anybody else? Maybe I should put this in it's own thead to attract more attention to my pleas...

Not sure I'm sold on these trailers.

I like the concept, but it feels like a poor execution.

Titles feel awkward, amateur... and the copy is strange. "Imagine what they do for Loss Fest" ???

Music isn't quite right, either.

Otherwise, this is a great idea and, if done right, could draw quite a bit of traffic to the fest.

Rodney V. Smith
11-20-2008, 06:10 PM
The COMPLETE trailer is now available for viewing. It features all 67 films and a few choice quotes. Quotes are taken from the finalists and from a couple others that seemed to fit the mood.

I've tried to be as impartial as possible with the choice of quotes (please note that I haven't included my own film), so please no one take offense.

Enjoy.

I decided not to use any copyrighted music for the trailer, mainly because this may actually be used outside of DVXUser this time around. Maybe I'm being too cautious, I dunno... Just trying to play it safe.

Rodney V. Smith

I'm cranky and irritable and I've been fighting this last file conversion for most of the day just to get it to render out, so maybe I'm not in the best frame of mind.

If any one has any ideas on how we can improve the text and copy ,whatever it takes to make a more cohesive package to promote the site, please let's hear it.

I took this project on simply because no one else was and I;d like to see it be fully representative of the DVXFests. There is no official trailer, presspack or not even any mods saying: hey let's do this (if they are, then someone stop me), so it's kind of up to us to try to promote the DVX Fest as best as possible.

Like I said: any ideas about how the trailers can be improved, please let me know. Just don't piss all over it.

Thanks.

Hey Puckthemad! 48 hours... good stuff! For the DVXuser community this is a very honorable piece of work. It really says a lot about your love of filmmaking and your appreciation for this community.

Kyle has a couple points... if you are using this for outside promotion, most people won't be familiar with the fests and there themes. It might need some other explanation like... "68 filmmakers. 68 dv cameras. One theme. Lots of beer.... DVXuser LOSS FEST!".

For me, I really liked watching these and think this would be kick a$$ to have for every DVXuser fest as a highlights piece.

Well worth the time and effort you put into this.

Kyle, you know I love you, but there is a difference between giving your thoughts and being an ass. I am not saying you were being an ass, but maybe that was a bit too harsh. Rodney did a fine job, in my opinion. I enjoyed them and I know others did too.

Rodney V. Smith

I'll have to watch them again later when i have a little more objectivity. I kinda just blazed through them trying to find the best parts/shots of each film. So I may have bungled it a little.

Let's see if we can stay on message and fix them up so that its relevent to everyone.

Let the suggestion flow people. Let your voices be heard.

In the meantime I'm going to do crash.

Wow - I think that was an exceptionally low blow. At least he is putting these together and doing something for the community.

That said - I throughly enjoyed the trailers as is. I saw the first two and I loved the concept. Props to you man for doing it. And the entire fest compilation was impressive.

My only comment is the audio levels do something funky when the audio from the films come in. Aside from that little detail - I like it. Excellent work.

thanks guys. glad you appreciated the effort.

While Kyle's comments did take the wind out of my sails, he did have a good point about lack of cohesive branding.

For any major advertising, one of the first things that needs to be decided is branding to have cohesion across the entire line. From videos to posters to banners, etc. That way you're not choosing arbitrary fonts and colors "just because you think they look cool".

I'm willing to re-edit the trailers (changing the fonts to be representative of the DVXUser brand) but some kind of decision needs to be made (probably at a moderator level) about exactly what that branding is.

If it's a set guideline that we can all follow, there's nothing stopping us from creating our own marketing schemes that are at least all related through the branding.

One good example of this is Sabi. Sabi was the first to introduce a podcast and that is one guy who is always thinking about branding. He is consistent with his materials, and as a result made me try to emulate his presentation (leader and end notes) so that there was a cohesive "dvxfest" look to them (if not a Sabi look).

Let's try to have a good marketing message out there, instead of a scattered one.

Input or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Mods, feel free to chime in at any time.

i do appreciate the amount of hard work that went into these, but I'm not such a big fan of a trailer to promote how awesome DVXfests are being cut together from heavily compressed and muxed footage. Fun for a tribute video, not so great for promotion.

not my favorite either, and they're definitely not tv ready with the compression settings, especially since they're re compressed once again. Believe me, i hate to see my very dark film come out looking so grainy in the compression.

The fact that there were so many different camera used, from HD to SD cameras, all different resolutions (even some of the HD was 720, some 1080, and then there's the RED footage) makes it even more difficult to get good quality rendering especially for promotion on the internet. Even if we were to get good quality clips of each film in the highest resolution possible, somebody's movie is not going to be properly represented with the best resolution.

I'd like good quality images for promoting the fests, but there are certain limitations that we have to endure and unless promotion is being set up for the next fest, while the current one is going on, there is no real way to make sure that all materials would be delivered in a timely fashion so that promotion could go forward in a timely fashion, representing the fest in the best possible light.

Any suggestions that anyone has to improve on quality, the look, the feel, the cohesion of marketing to the outside DVXUser world, please make them. I'd like to not operate in a vacuum and we all put too much work into our films.

Let's hear your voices.

"Imagine what they do for Loss Fest"

Grammatically, I think, "Imagine what they'll (or, "they will") do for Loss Fest," would sound better. Otherwise, great work!

Zak Forsman

these criticisms are more or less irrelevant. all five spots show iconic shots from the films and direct the viewer to the dvxfest.com link. that's enough. best of all, they're short. what we need is to get them in front of eyeballs. let's push these things out there, "embed and spread" on blogs, youtube, vimeo, facebook, myspace, metacafe, dailymotion, stupidvideos, revver, aol videos, blip.tv, veoh, crackle, viddler, etc.

puck, can you upload the files somewhere so we can grab them? i want to get these out there asap.

i would also like to encourage everyone, if you have a blog, start talking about this fest and tag your articles with "dvxfest" so we can track them through technorati. if you dont have a blog. start one.

http://wordpress.com
http://www.blogger.com
http://twitter.com (microblog)

talk about the films you saw last fest, what you liked, what you didn't, talk about the film you are making this time. personally, i think the lack of outside promotion to date has made dvxfest into one of the filmmaking communities "best kept secrets". and that's the angle i will play up in my promotion for the fest. i'm going use my contacts to try and get us some online radio interviews and i'll make mention of the fest in the articles i write for workbook project.

this new allowance for "outside promotion" is a wonderful opportunity for us to actively expand our audience collectively, beyond this forum. we can't live by the thought of "if we build it, they will come". they won't.

Rodney V. Smith
11-22-2008, 01:43 PM
Zak you make an excellent point. We ALL do need to get more involved in this promotion opportunity.

Use the banners, posters, trailers and most of all, link everyone back to the fest so they know about it. We can at least plant a seed so when we remind them in March, the interest is already there.

Zak Forsman
11-22-2008, 02:04 PM
your right, puck. the promotion and awareness building needs to happen now. these next few months give us the opportunity to build an audience for march the likes of which past DVXFests have never seen. hmmm... i think we need a mailing list for email blasts. i'm going to open a google docs account and I'll post the login back here so everyone can add to it. another doc with press contacts would be good too.

I like the idea of getting a wider audience, and there are two issues that I think are pretty important here.

1. Many people asked me, "How do I see the other films?", and of course I tell them you have to sign up to dvxuser... a real drag for some. I think there should be a way for "guests" to see the movies without needing to login or sign up. The login option would be there for the users that are elegible to rate the film.

2. If we're sending out a link now, what should it be? The DVXFEST link leads one to a world of trouble if you start to explore past festivals, as there are MANY dead links to movie files, and it isn't clear which ones are the winners, so a person is bound to lose interest quickly. If the link goes to DVXUSER, or the lossfest thread, they are seeing a LOT of "Stuff" and everyone I have pointed that way has gotten overwhelmed in the "clutter". Not to mention the fact that at this point, it's a lot of ridiculous thread-bumping banter with not much substance for anyone outside the dvxuser bubble.

I'm all for promoting things around here, because the quality of work is excellent and deserves more eyes on it, but I feel like there needs to be a cleaner "marketing" plan, with interesting content in order for it to work.

Agreed. A more graphical interface to encourage outside viewers would be useful... similar to vimeo or youtube.. or like how atomfilms.com used to be set up.

Quick easy viewing with emphasis on the winners (finalists) would be an awesome addition. the DVXFest is it's own link right now, why not make it it's own creature and take it all the way into the mainstream?

DVXfest.com will be the clearinghouse for all things festival ... and it is in the early stages of being re-designed (or finally designed :) ). I've been so busy getting the code working that the site's face has lacked attention, and so far that's been ok. But with the inclusion of outside promotion, it's time to improve our "curb appeal"

 Huzzah and all things celebrational. Larry if you ever need help redesigning, I'll gladly volunteer my web design services to facilitate the process. Anything to make your job easier.

your right, puck. the promotion and awareness building needs to happen now. these next few months give us the opportunity to build an audience for march the likes of which past DVXFests have never seen. hmmm... i think we need a mailing list for email blasts. i'm going to open a google docs account and I'll post the login back here so everyone can add to it. another doc with press contacts would be good too.

I can see it now... Wow, we have to watch 184 shorts? :zombie_smiley:

i think that's where the mods step in and set some type of limit on submissions.. it's going to happen eventually... it's just a matter of when.

We'd definitely have to limit entries to one per person...

That's what I am a little worried about. It was hard enough to watch 70 films. And that number keeps coming up.

imho, having the number of participating films increase is a small price to pay for increasing viewership beyond the confines of this forum.

btw, that www.dvxfest.com at the end of the videos is placed perfectly. and i'm glad you didn't fade out to black on it. because after the videos play on youtube that address just sits there, perfectly legible. good music selections too.

thanks. it was designed with youtube and facebook in mind, especially how it hangs at the last frame. get's into your BRAIN that way....insidious and sneaky-like.
