We have an idea at the moment; something with low, almost no VFX, very unlike what anyone here would probably associate with me* ;) We're currently outlining the story, so things are still subject to change a bit. We've decided on a bit more lighthearted story than I was thinking before, but not an all-out comedy, so it should still provide a challenge :)

In the mean time, come one come all, drink and smoke, whatever. Just don't touch the stereo you sons of b****es

*This entire idea will undoubtedly become a 400+ VFX shot show with nothing for my actors but a sea of green. Muahahah!

Nate...good to see you coming out of the shadows. Looking forward to this one!
Best of luck.

PS- lose the hat
(hey, that might be an idea for your film)

OMG! That'd take me into the comedy realm though, I guarantee it. And I've done plenty of that; I've yet to do a touching drama though :)

But man... something with that hat almost makes me want to do two films. Wait 'till I get the images of me with that hat on, standing in an alley way smoking a cigarette. Just the idea of that should be funny enough for those who know how I don't smoke or drink at all

Indeed, it shall be back in less than a week :)

Haha! Oddly enough that probably will be the case. When I'm working on my films I'm constantly looking for distracting things to paint out. I think I might have a problem actually

Thanks for the well wishes :D

I think it shows more balls to go FX-less then to do what everyone expects Kudos to you man...And good luck.

Thank you! As for an update on the project, I just had an idea that hit me, and as I was pitching it to Leigh--our makeup artist on Dead Week and whom I hope will be interested in writing the script with me--I started getting more and more ideas for it, and it's something I think we could have a lot of fun with playing with the cinematography and color grading. It's based roughly on well, true feelings, but not necessarily true events ;)

Hehe... I once made a video called "Title Goes Here." You know, "Title of Some Such will go Here" would actually be a somewhat appropriate title for the idea I have cooking, although that'd lend itself more toward a comedy, which I'd like to shy away from. Comedies are too easy IMO.

I remember that you are the person for the special effects in one 'certain film' :Drogar-Love(DBG):. In this case we will probably see more something like an action movie!?

Actually I'm straying off the beaten path of my usual works and venturing off into a realm I have yet to tackle. Very little VFX planned for this film :)

Comedy! Easy! Ha! Drama is easy. That's why so many people gravitate to it or end up with "dramadies" which probably happened because their jokes fell flat. Of course people can write comedy, but few can really be funny. (Of course I could just be bitter that no onegets my jokes, but that's just a theory)

Is Stebbins helping you out on this one?

NateCaauwe
11-20-2008, 09:43 PM
Haha, well everyone seems to enjoy the comedies my friends and I do, and considering how little time we sometimes put into those and still manage to get a laugh, they seem the "easy" route for us. As for the Stebbins, he is one of my favorite camera accessories, so I'd like to have his assistance; I'm not sure if I'm going to end up shooting in Norfolk or Lincoln yet.

Rodney V. Smith
11-20-2008, 09:47 PM
Well damn, I wish I had your gift for funny. I can be funny, but it's the kind of funny you get about 10 minutes later... and that doesn't work too well for movies. use your camera accessories well. I'm sure whatever you turn out is gonna be pretty sweet.

Hey if you're not doing FX work on this, can I borrow your brain for a week or two? I could use the technical bits and get that brain right back to you... a little battered, but none the worse for wear...

Leigh and I have got our idea down, character names worked out, and little bit of background info on them. We'll hopefully have a short description and teaser poster up after the weekend to replace my first post. Otherwise we're spending the next few weeks taking our time fleshing out our characters and getting a solid script down.

We're a little torn though because Christmas break would be the best time to shoot, except that's when Alex goes home, and we were probably going to use his HVX, and in all honesty we both had him in mind as our lead (way to break it to ya, huh Alex? ), so who knows how things will pan out... *starts eying Kyle's HVX*

Anyway, good to be making progress :)

Is it bad when you start falling in love with a character you've written?

Anyway, Leigh and I have fleshed out our characters even more, and got the gist of our story down. Hopefully we'll get a first draft of the script done shortly after Thanksgiving break :) No title or poster yet though like I had hoped, sorry.

NateCaauwe

We've cast our two leads. One of them being Alex, who hasn't yet been pitched the character or film though, but he's my bitch, so...yeah. I was glad to find local talent for our female lead, thanks to Leigh. She also suggested a title, but I'm not particularly sold on it.

Anyway, we've been making satisfying progress every night we talk, and I would dub us a duo of doom (http://natecow.com/Trio_of_Doom.html) at this point, but Tim already took that title. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVsboK-8cTM)

Hehe, I just wrote something into the script that ties into O2. Not in anyway that anyone here other than maybe Mark will notice, but I'll point it out later. 'Tis on a personal level and has to do with my involvement on DVXuser and is all around just neat to think about...in fact, it's so neat I'm vowing now to not let Leigh cut it out

Well, as I'm working on the script here...just like I figured from the beginning, I've managed to turn two scenes, and at least two shots in a third scene, into VFX sequences. Why can't I just stop?! :badputer:

Oh well, this is what I love about filmmaking today. Digital snow FTW! :D

Well Tim and Leigh and I had an extremely late meeting last night (supposed to start at 1; stared at 3 instead (yes, AM)), and as I took Leigh home around 5 we discussed whether or not we accomplished anything. If anything I think we settled on our two most favorable shooting days out of 3 possible days. Of course we're also still absent a lead actor since Alex can no longer fill the role since he'll be back home in Arkansas.

I also need to call around tomorrow and check with our two locations we have in mind. One is a place I used to work at, and where I still know people who work there such as my uncle. The other is a local bar that does allow minors in on certain occasions, and happens to have "teen night" on the night we're looking at shooting, but that means it may be too busy for our liking. However I learned that Tim may have connections to little privately owned bar/grill in a town about 30 miles away, so I'm actually hoping that works out better.

Also... we may get the great Mark Johnson to come cause trouble on our set for our epic full day and evening of shooting (it'll suck for the small crew and male lead, but our female lead will have a late call time, lucky girl), which will probably fall on the 30th.

All this is also hanging on the fact that the only camera I have access to Kyle's HVX, which if we end up shooting on two Tuesdays, means he probably won't be able to accompany it, which is a real bummer because I would love to have him assist me. Plus it's then a matter of whether his dad trusts us with the camera sans Kyle, which Kyle informed me would probably be okay.

So yeah, lots of hoping and oh yeah, Leigh and I need to finish the script

NateCaauwe

Some updates as we enter our week of hopeful shooting: We recast our lead, cast one of our two minor roles, refined the script a little more, are awaiting word from upper management about what will hopefully be our main location, and we may indeed be able to get Kyle up here for our first night of shooting. The location for that night is most likely secured.

I also came upon a possible title idea, but Leigh doesn't seem to be too thrilled at how much research I went through to settle on it...so we're going to sit on it for awhile and see if anything else comes to us. The other title in mind is one that came to me way at the beginning of the fest when we were developing our idea, but I personally feel the story has deviated too far to warrant its use. The more I think about it the more I like what I came upon. I actually actively researched psychology to see if there was a term for what our main character was doing in hopes that it would make a reasonable title, and there not only was, but it actually explained his actions better than we could as the writers...which is good because I was starting to think his decisions weren't making any sense

*Sigh*

I'm saddened to have to inform everyone that I won't be entering :( Life intervened in some pretty harsh ways (everyone's alive, not that harsh), and I also lack funds to even provide Oreos and beer on set, so yeah...I'm even more bummed because I managed to write a new script within one night that would be easier to shoot, and was a pretty sad story, which is what I wanted to do from the beginning.

We definitely want to make both movies yet...at least our lead actress and myself  But for this festival, we've sorta all got our hands tied. We just couldn't get everyone together at once :( At this point Alex is busy doing God knows what in Lincoln, Sarah is involved with two plays and I'm about to start on a 2-3 month venture on a feature film, and just wrapped on one this week. Hopefully I can hop in the directors chair for the next festival; summer time is a little easier to coordinate people :)

Best of luck to everyone else, I'll have the tissues ready come March, can't wait to see the entries.

Hey man, sorry to hear that. It's always sad when someone has to pull out. If I'm being honest, I'm not gaging my own chances very high at the moment. :(

I wish you the best, maybe next time! :)
