So, basically, I got nothing.

So you never said how auditions went and if your nerves conquered you. details man! details!
jasonthewho
12-19-2008, 06:17 AM
They went fine. As I thought there were not too many people. It was a hard script to audition people from. You'll understand what I mean when you see the film. It's hard to be too specific without giving things away.
I had several very enthusiastic people though, and everyone seemed to be digging the script/story. And that's definitely a good thing.

Met with Ed Jackson, who's writing the title song for the film, and it's sounding good. He taught the beginning to me (a painful process considering how bad I am at the guitar). The meeting gave me a lot of new ideas of how to use music and sound in this film.
I still need to cast one more character. I have an audition for it later this week.
I also have to get locations. That's the part that really scares me.
jasonthewho
01-15-2009, 02:47 PM
So, there was a chance I was going to use a Red on this one, but that's not going to happen anymore.
No worries though, I have a few other camera options, and I'm kinda glad I won't have to worry about the Red workflow with all the other things I have to deal with on this one.
Rodney V. Smith
01-16-2009, 09:25 AM

Well Rodney, as of last night I am completely cast. I am happy to announce that Callen McLaughlin is joining the cast.

Updates:
Gary French will be the Director of Photography for Melody For Allyriane. He was the DP for my previous film, The Five Worst Days in the Life of Bartholomew Saxton (http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=126848). You should also check out his Lossfest entry, Invalid Directive (http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=154378).
Bought a crucial prop today. I'll have to test it out to make sure it will work for the film, but it'll look nice if it does.
I believe we will be shooting Feb. 7th and 8th. Just need some final confirmations and I can lock those dates.

Finally worked out my location issues. I still have a lot of work to do to get the location in shape for the shoot next weekend, but now the end is in sight.
Max Durrett, a friend of mine who I've worked with on a couple of plays will be lending his house for the film. He will also be lending a lot of time and energy to help me convert it into a working set for the film, so a big thank you to Max.
I'm going to have to turn his bathroom into a closet. That'll be... fun.

Unfortunately, it seems like for each thing I accomplish, there are two things I end up pushing to the following day.
Filming on Saturday and Sunday! Scary. I'm not ready. It'll be a mad dash, especially since my wife is directing a theatre scene that goes up tomorrow, and I'm filming that tonight.

So I mentioned before that we converted a bathroom into a closet for this film. Here's a few pictures.

In the first picture you can see the dry wall covering the sides of the bathroom. The second picture is with the back wall in place. The back wall needed to be removable so we could do a shot from inside the closet looking out.
Matt Bravo had the unenviable job of holding the back wall in place while we were shooting.

This is one of a small handful of films that I saw that I think will prove to be a sleeper hit of the fest.
A well shot, simplistic piece with a lot of emotional depth to it. Your film was solid on all fronts, but I think you excelled particularly in story and execution of story.
I don't have too much to say at this moment. I want to go back and watch this one again, as you were an early upload and it's not as fresh on my mind after watching 40 some odd films after it. But, I did want to stop by while I have a moment and tell you thanks for sharing your work. Was a beautiful little story. I honestly enjoyed it quite a lot.

Yep just to add, the mod already mentioned this maybe being a sleeper hit in the fest - and that wouldn't surprise me!
It had a dark and slightly eerie tone to its 'loss' representation, and i found myself sympathising with the characters hopelessness in the situation. It had a dreamlike quality also (or should that be a nightmare - almost supernatural /neo-gothic) element that I liked too.
So a good movie mon amie well done.

Excellent, well rounded short film. Nice execution and I admire the simplicity of the piece as a whole. Love that you have very precise shots engineered to tell the story visually rather than rely on getting coverage of this, coverage of that, etc. Editing is on par and the piece flows well. Ron and Victoria did a great job; particularly Victoria considering how she has one shot (setup wise), one opportunity to really get our attention and make us care. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with Geoff. The work as a whole stands strong on its bare legs. Shot with a simple color palette and execution, the film pulls the audience into the intimacy between the man, guitar, and woman in a triangle of fading memories and stone-washed dreams.
I really like the simple lighting and texture of the film. It accompanied the performances and atmosphere well. The shot/reverse shot situation you set up between Ron and Victoria was very nice and made me think of older Jonathan Demme films (which is a VERY good thing).
I really enjoyed this one. I'm going to view it again before I vote, but it certainly grabbed me. Great work!
EDIT: You know, in a way, it began to remind me of Krapp's Last Tape by Samuel Beckett, at least until the third character was brought in (the guitar being the second).

I used Final Cut Pro's Quicktime Conversion export. Chose the High quality export. Changed the size to 800x450, and changed the bitrate to something like 1100 kbits (writing this from memory).
I had some advantage because my film was close to 5:30 instead of taking up the whole 6:10.
If I had a longer film I would have probably dropped the size to 720x405 and dropped the bitrate some.

What can I say? You hung this on the wall and it looks beautiful. Sometimes, simple films with simple stories are more breath taking than any location or special FX can carry. Your cinematographer did an exceptional job and the editing was spot on. The music is perfectly melancholy and sets the mood. Your actors look great in the shots you composed. Those tight shots are wonderful. The only thing, and I'm digging really deep, there is an overhead shot of your actor moving out of frame with the guitar... he looks a little too careful, turning around and walking, to not disrupt the camera shooting overhead. Sorry to through that one at you. But, I had too, for making a very fine film.

Very nice work. And gorgeous sound by the way. Because your audio is so good, I'm not afraid to point out my one critique, when the woman turned her head back to face the mirror, I could tell the placement of the microphone because of the shift in tone, maybe try getting the audio from both sides next time if you can. But again, I'm only giving that anal of a critique because I was very impressed with how clean and crystal clear your sound was.

Surprised in a way that you were the first person to mention the string thing. I loved the look of the guitar, but needed it to be a six string for the film. My explanation is that he had to sell all the other guitars he had at some point, but he couldn't part with this one. So whenever he wanted to play a six-string guitar, he would have to convert this one. Of course, that was all a long time ago, since he hasn't played it in quite a while.

You struck all the right chords (oh ho! pun!) it feels intimate and you've created a strong entry. How many times does this guy relive this only to forget? It was haunting almost. You took a simple idea but everything felt spot on in this, you really worked everything out and had some great visual detail that I dug. Fantastic work I really enjoyed it.

A very simple story, that played out nicely. I understand that this is a fairly slow, subtle piece, but the opening sequence of pulling out the guitar, putting it on the bench, opening it, could have pushed through a bit more and still kept all the right pacing and the nuances needed. I think overall this piece could have been assisted with subtle camera movement as well.
Just some opinions there.

Very enjoyable film, Jason.
There is an interesting 'cruelty' in the female. I could see this play out much longer to explore this 'emotionally unavailable' woman that drives a man to creative brilliance.
My only qualm is pulling the guitar case from what appears to be a closet in use, and blowing the dust off it. Maybe he just hasn't touched it in decades, yet maintains the rest, which is completely plausible.
Nice on the reluctance to admit the song is gone.
Yeah, nice film.

As far as the closet, out of curiosity, what made you think it was in use? It's location? My thought was that he used it as a storage closet. The only other stuff I put in it were basically cardboard boxes. I don't think that honestly you can see much else of what's in there in the actual film though.

watched this on the flight from LA to Austin a few days ago. and was I impressed. so nice to see a film that unfolds in such a gentle, understated way. we've had our share of the cinematic equivalent to being hit over the head with a frying pan in both the comedies and dramas in this fest. i wonder if that comes out of a fear of not being able to connect with and generate a response in the viewer. so you get overly sentimental dialogue and music from the dramas and slapstick/farce from the comedies. but this, this was masterful in its execution, and it's so nice to see something made by a filmmaker confident in what he's saying, but more importantly, how he's saying it.

Jason, I thought this was a well-crafted story and I really enjoyed watching it unfold. The lead actor's performance kind of took me out of it though, as I feel like he was inconsistent. When he was frustrated and trying to remember something, I totally believed him . When he was speaking to Allyriane, I just didn't buy it at all.
Photography was very nice, as was the the sound, pacing, and pretty much everything else.

Nice melody.
I like the look of it, and the lighting all around. She looked especially good (and is quite a looker to boot!)
It's a simple concept that was effective for me, especially being a musician myself and always forgetting songs and melodies. :)
A couple things stood out that have been mentioned- The dust blowing part was weird. The only reason for it would be to show that he hasn't played in a long time, right? I might have put the guitar way in the back of the closet instead and had him dig it out under other junk.
The cutting between his fingers and his face when he's trying to remember the song. It was a little awkward and took away from the believability factor that he was actually playing the guitar. I didn't think he was "really" playing, for the most part? Not sure, but it didn't feel like it.
His "other" voice when she is talking to him. It made me go, huh? took me out of it a little, particularly the way it was recorded so close. If it sounded distant, I might have bought it.
I loved the sound fx transitioning between the flashbacks. Especially the first one. It was understated, but very effective at telling us that we're in another time or place.
I really enjoyed the simplicity of the whole piece, and I think there's a lot of detail and thought that went into it, which leaves me with several version of his backstory. The dog-tags being the strongest clue. I like interpretive pieces that have enough to hold onto, and yet still much for the viewer to decide, depending on how they feel.
Great work!

His other voice is a younger actor, playing a younger him. I wanted it to be clear that this was a long time ago. The reason the recording sounds close is the same reason Allyriane is looking at the camera. We ARE James in this shot, so it's our voice. Make sense?

Loved this and I will echo what others have said. This is a strong piece that is based on a really simple idea. I liked the acting.
What was your lighting setup for musician? It seems you did some significant work on the final look based on your initial stills. It has a nice soft daylight feel about it.
jasonthewho
03-16-2009, 06:20 PM
I'm pretty helpless when it comes to describing lighting setups. Maybe Gary will drop in, although he might not remember himself. I think it was a fairly simple key light and a fill set up, with the lights fairly high aiming down.
As for the color correction, for the James scenes I desaturated the footage a lot and moved it towards blue.
Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you liked it!

I admit I haven't read through all of these posts yet and the answer might very well be in there somewhere, but I was just wondering where you got the name Allyriane from?
jasonthewho
03-16-2009, 10:54 PM
Actually no one's asked, but I'd be happy to answer.
Allyriane is a French name that is derived from the Greek word "lyre." A lyre is a stringed instrument which is a predecessor of the guitar. Hence why I picked it. And I found it by doing Baby Name searches for girl names dealing with music.
I'll admit the pronunciation for the purposes of the film was invented by me, because I had a difficult time determining what the correct pronunciation would be.

Just dropping back in now to give this a review, now that I've got a moment & am awake. :)
It's a simple story, simple set up, and simple ending ... but I DIG it. It's simplicity makes it less complicated to understand, follow, and then can kick back even more & enjoy all the other achievements in this film. I really LOVED your editing here, with the SFX as memories began to come back, the rack focusing on the mirror (lovely) as she turned back & forth, and more.
Lighting was solid, and quite frankly, everything was solid here. In fact, I don't think there's anything I can find to critique this, from a technical point, nor really story as I think you told it exactly the way it was meant to be told.
Very nicely done.

hey Jason, good work here. i thought you could have done a little more with it, but then again, you're in round 2! so what do i know?
seriously though, sometimes less is more, and you really pulled off a simple story effectively.
i'm a big fan of your work; good luck in the next round.

Wow, simple and nearly perfect. It's easy to see why you made it to round 2. And, I guess I didn't see TwilightFest, but though I enjoyed you TimeFest, this is like miles above it.
Though so I detect an homage to another DVXUser in here?
Anyway, the only ding I can really find in this, was that her voice was markedly more echo-y than his. Not badly recorded, but whatever room it was sounded eche-y. Not a huge deal, but just enough to notice between his talking and hers. It made her voice sound less professionally recorded than his, if that makes sense.
But really nice work guys. Tx DVXUsers can bring it.

I didn't have a TwilightFest entry, so you didn't miss anything from me.

Not intentional... Do you mean Jason Ramsey's film?
Anyway, the only ding I can really find in this, was that her voice was markedly more echo-y than his.
Yeah, his audio was recorded in a different location. It definitely has a different tone.
Thanks for checking this out Mark! I've been meaning to leave you some thought on Evie, but I want to watch it again to refresh my memory.

I am proud to be apart of a top 10 movie. Therefore I show my allegiance to Jason Johnson-Spinos!!
Thanks for being in my (our) little experiment piece (for those of you who have been under a rock...the actor in Sudden Realization was Jason. Anyhoos, I'm rooting for ya man!

Congrats, Jason! For a woman with parents struggling with aging, this film definitely touched my heart!
Also, Zack has adapted your shoe style (different colored Vans on each foot)! He loves it and the comments it brings from his friends ("Did you dress in the dark this morning, dude?"). You're already influencing the younger generation! ;)
Again, congrats and job well-done!

This was a beautiful piece, man. Congrats.. seriously. I think this one kind of connected with me the most.. I don't know why, but I just really found myself feeling sad by the end. I'm not old...and I can't play the guitar... I guess I was just REALLY hoping he could get through the song. It made me sad. Haha. But yeah.... very well done. I'm sure you'll place in the top 3.

Thanks Candy! I'm glad you checked the film out. That's so funny about Zack's shoes. I'm glad that I'm apparently a footwear trendsetter.

Wow, thank you Mike! I really appreciate that! I'm so glad this connected with you.
hey, just watched this again and realized i hadn't commented yet.
i love the blue on the walls. I also like the simplicity in the way you shot her scene. The main actor has quite a look. I like how contained everything is. At times the main room looked a little like a set, but it's solid as hell. Congrats on making it to the end. Really want to see more.

I caught your extended ending before it got taken down. Some really hilarious stuff.

One other thing I really liked about your short was how oddly likable your main dude was. At first I assumed he'd be come creep, and I wasn't sure about him initially but you two did a great job making him enjoyable to watch and sympathize with.

I didn't get a chance to see all the films. But I did see this one and it was one my favorites.
A simple story, but it really connects on an emotional level. I liked the pacing. The actor was really good. I thought the lighting and choice of shots set the mood really well.
Great job.
It makes me reflect on my own writing a bit and I think after this scriptfest, I'm going to try and write something with a bit more of a simple premise. Actually writing a simple story that works on a lot of levels seems more challenging. You did a good job of that on this piece.
I'm glad to see you're one of the finalists. I hope it does well, good luck.

I really like it, despite a few things that are normally big deal issues I have. I think the dark romantic nature of the story over shadows them all. I'm not saying never use them, I'm not even saying they're bad, I'm just saying whenever I see an actor looking directly into the camera, I get a tummy ache, that's why it's really hard for me to get through a Jonathan Demme movie. It didn't bug me too much with your movie though, it's just always distracting. Kinda like when people sit right next to you when your talking and breath on you, can't focus with that.

I'm glad you liked it despite your dislike of talking to the camera. I was hesitant about it, but felt it was the best way to express James reliving his memory.
I just watched Philadelphia last night, and boy, Demme does use this technique A LOT. In just about every scene.

I liked the old guy. Liked the guitar scenes. Didn't like her scenes one bit, her acting skills kept pulling me out. Nice camera work, but I thought the master shot of the bedroom (at the beginning) could use diffusion or a less harsh light. Also, wasn't Alzheimer / memory loss done already, with "Remember When"?

Very intriguing / interesting / concept. Had a haunting feeling. Maybe the best exploration of the theme in the finalists. Nice work

Thank you Susanne! I've missed having you around the boards. Glad you were able to check out the film and that you liked it so much!
Thanks for commenting Gabriel! Yes, Remember When dealt with the same topic, but I think that our stories were quite different.
Thank you so much Jack! I'm sad I couldn't make it to the BBQ. Hopefully there will be another Texas get together in the future.

Thanks everyone for being so supportive this fest! It was a fantastic experience for me. DVXuser.com is a great place. A FREE festival that offers prizes? Who else does that?
Congrats again to the winners. I was honored to be in such an amazing top ten.

Melody for Allyriane is now on IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1451660/).
I also have submitted the film to the Austin Film Festival (how I got it on IMDb). It'll be awhile before I find out, but cross your fingers!
