How the shoot went:

First day of shooting went well. We shot all the kids scenes and it went fairly well. Felt long, but really, we shot it in about 5-6 hours including a lunch break.

Everyone got to the location at about 9, and we started shooting at 10. The first shot took a while, and I was worried that schedule would go all wonky.

The kids did a great job and I was amazed by it. We broke for lunch at around noon and started shooting again at 1.

We wrapped up at around 3ish, and I had a good feeling that we have everything covered.

This was the first film for me where I actually had people help out (sound mixer, producer) so it was all new, and that means, me being nervous. I was pretty worried about the shoot and how it would go, especially relying on others that I had
to be apart of it. In the end, I was satisfied and I now know a sound mixer I can hire for all my shoots!

Kegan helped out with the direction, and gave some nice insight on one of the scenes in terms of "cinematography".

All in all, the day went smooth, not to many problems.

Hope you all enjoy this thread!

I originally told Kegan that I wanted him to team up with my this fest, but I wanted him to be in control more on the business side (casting, locations, equipment, cast/crew)

We'll talk, but I think I'm the cinematographer, I'm definitely the Editor/CC, but I'd like to Direct as well.

I know in this business you can't, and shouldn't do it ALL, but I want to expand both my filming and directing skills.

With that being said, I'd like to be Director with Kegan, (He can be AD or something) But we'll both have say in whatever we do!

Robbie

I'll be producing and AD'ing on this short. Robbie wants to give directing a solid go and I'm more than willing to let him. I'll also have creative input however and we'll make this a real team effort.

Very cool of you, Kegan. :)

Robbie, directing can encompass everything... the top directors have say in every step along the way...

Glad to be doing it.

Kegan and I are very confident that this film will turn out looking good.

Story board is almost complete. Making some changes with the writer. Also, if Herman approves, we may have Sarah Daly write a song just for our film...The writer was happy with that, but I want Kegan and Herman to ok it first-Herman hasn't received anything yet so he doesn't know how it will turn out...He'll let me know.

It would be a song written for Time In A Bottle though, which would be neat, and something new.

Rodney is letting us borrow his dolly which is always a fun thing!

Kegan will make a casting call soon!

WOW. Wow. Wow, is all I can say.

Sarah is a genious.

I asked if she was interested in writing a song for our film, but it wasn't going to be 100% yet as I'd have to have it ok'ed by some others.

So, knowing Sarah, she made it anyway :).

Just sent it to me and I am amazed. I want to show all my friends and every one I know.

I can't believe she made this in ONE night/day..

Lyrics, acoustics, and it fits the film so well.

I hope all works out. If not, after the fest I'll make a directors cut or something :)

Thanks Sarah!

My friend who has a sweet studio built in his basement (a rap artist) is letting me use his mic for any foley work that will be needed for Time In A Bottle.

I'll get a final cut done, go to his house and then get the cover audio sound files that I need.

He's got the AKG mic incase you're wondering.

Hunter007

Well, after our first day of shooting...all I have to say is I have NO idea why people complain so much about working with kids! Granted, it is a little tougher and we were shooting in the cold for 6-7 hours, but they handled it like champs.

The key is definitely to make sure to give them enough breaks, lots of encouragement and have a LOT of patience.

There was some fiddling around with presets that PaPa and others created, so kudos to them for helping get the look we were going for.

I'm happy with the way today's shoot went and look forward to shooting again next week. Our sound guy Paul (last name ?) was fantastic and remained very professional throughout, though clearly we were in a budget he is not used to working in.

Anybody have any questions?

Just quickly checking in - now TODAY was a horrible day to shoot. I have to admit, it was ridiculous. I mean, this was short but the drop in temperature more than made up for it. I couldn't imagine shooting a full day at -25 degrees celcius.

Anyway, we sat down and came out with a rough cut tonight - it's going to be tight, but I have no doubt we're going to make it in on time.

I'm going to do a more full write-up of the two collective shooting days and post back once my fingers dethaw.

Just received the score from Herman.

It's beautiful.

I wouldn't mind some touches.

Also, during the song, I hear a "click" or a "pop" kinda noise for a frame or two...It's bugging me cause I converted the song to an AIFF file.

This quick beep/bop sound only happens when it's in my FCP timeline...Not in the original file he sent me.

Can I fix this at all?

Robbie

Zak Forsman
03-06-2009, 05:41 PM
check that both your sequence and the file are running at the same sampling rate (48khz vs 44.1khz for example). not being the same can cause pops.

Robbie Comeau
03-06-2009, 05:45 PM
48 kHz for my timeline.

Now, how do I check/change the file?

Robbie

Zak Forsman
03-06-2009, 05:51 PM
look at the audio clip in the project bin and scroll right to the "Aud Rate" field. if it's not 48khz, this might be the issue.

I did it in 44.1 khz because I figured it would be web and the compressed version is likely to be 44.1 khz. Normally for DVD and theater mixes I do use 48 khz :-)

Ya, I used the Lens Blur effect on the footage. Then, on the layer I had it precomposed with a ramp in it controlling where the depth is :)

A little bit of roto work around the talent on the right as well.

Gotta do last minute things and leave this country!

Compressor is being stupid cause it won't crop at 2:35.1.

I hate it, I hate it. I'm doing it all right as well.

It's taking a while to export at 1280x720, so I hope I can get this done before I leave!

If you can't get it done upload the HD file to your site and send me a link.
I'll use QT Pro and get it done. Cropped and all.

Thanks Mike, appreciate it.

Only problem is the wait time on the export which is right now.

It's about half way done in Compressor (Batch Monitor) then after that it usually just finishes quick.

Not sure how long it will take to upload it to the DVXUser's server, but I think I should be fine!

Unless, you want me to express mail you the project file and the tapes, you can capture, link the footage, and then do it yourself? Or is that to much work?

Kidding...:)

Thanks though!

Ok, shouldn't be bad then.

That makes sense since Too Late To Cancel was under 30MB's, and it didn't take to long either.

Robbie just watched the film and it's a good effort. I liked your choice of actors and locations, especially given the many changes you had to make. You've got some nice shots in there and you're definitely progressing in the art.

Some things didn't quite work for me though. Try to spend more time with your actors and let them become more comfortable with the characters, cuz the big thing that blew it for me and it was even just watching them walk was this: they were acting.

Yeah I know they're actors and everything, so they;re supposed to act, but there was a definite "I'm acting this and doign what I'm told" level of discomfort from the actors, and watching that kind of threw me off. For them it was all just pretend. No one was properly invested in their characters and it shows. For a piece like this, the emotional involvement was key to pulling this off.

Just sit with your actors next time and try to figure them out, what makes them respond and try to get them to not play a character, but be themselves AS the character. What a good actor can do is make you believe that it happened to THEM and that it's entirely real. For a while you can forget that they're just acting and be drawn into the story completely.

Good effort, decent edit. It's good to watch your growth here on the forum.

Robbie and Kegan.

I thought this was a very good short. I have to disagree with Puck on the acting. I thought the kids did an amazing job and they came off extremely natural. Kids are tough to work with but you guys pulled it off. Especially during their dialogue together. I had zero issues with them.

The lead actress sold the moment for me as well.

The sound design and music was also top notch! Big improvement here.
I now love the jolt at the end between the lead actress and the kids jumping on the bridge. Nice touch.

You also nailed the theme. Solid story.

I have a few nitpicks but you already know them. Filming the girls in plain woods and then showing the new park with a more mature marked tree when the lead actress shows up would have helped sell the past/future even further.

Great entry though.

Nice work to the both of you.

Robbie, Wonderful film. You just keep getting better and better.

I really liked your actresses a lot. Working with kids is not easy and I thought they were great - very natural and the lead actress was subtle and I felt the pain of her loss.

Lastly, as always, Herman's music was a perfect accompaniment for this touching film.

Well done.

Thanks for the comments guys. There were some deviations we had to make from the original screenplay that took out some of the emotional firepower that was intended, but I think that we got a strong performance from the girls.

I will admit however, that the lead actress' facial expressions could have been worked on a bit, as well as her walk that opened the film...it was just hard to control either, considering how cold it was that day.

Come to think of it, if we weren't on such a tight timeline at the very end - I would have rescheduled for a different day. Ah well, not justifying anything at all...they're all valid points.

Rodney, thanks for the comments. I agree that working with actors is very important and I'm sure Robbie will take it into consideration and schedule rehearsals the next time around. It's just sometimes difficult when everyone's schedule is so crazy and the actor's are young (ie - have to miss school, or weekend function, etc) and doing it for free. I can't speak on Robbie's behalf, but I'm sure that he appreciates the advice on getting to know your actors.

Chris, I have to thank you for bringing Time in a Bottle to our attention. Without you pointing us in this direction, we might have decided with something completely different.

Mike, comments appreciated as always and glad it had the intended emotional effect for you.

Keep the criticism coming guys!

This was a very sweet and endearing film, you guys. It was rock solid and I can most certainly appreciate the story. The acting was all very good. You really are coming up in the world of filmmaking, Robbie.

Now, as lawriejaffa had so eloquently put it in another thread, this film ran the risk of being "easy" with sentimentality. I dare suggest that this film does indeed run close to easy sentimentality, but it is grounded by the performances, the structure, and sturdy production values.

Sure, it borders on sentimentality, but it still has a BIG heart, and I love that.

Really nice work here!

Hey I can't be right all of the time. I was mostly referring to their approach anyway, so sorry I didn't clarify. Kind of threw me off a little there. The actors for the most part were very good, but the approach really didn't work for me. Skipping along like that... just doesn't work for me.

Robbie you've got a good piece here, but it's simply just good. Take it for what it's worth dude.

Regardless of the skipping fitting the film or not, Tony Little is still awesome.

I agree that it might have pushed the child-like aspect of the film harder, but it wasn't really bothersome. Just something to consider.

I was privy to the screenplay before filming, and think Kegan and Robbie did it justice. I believe they mentioned 6 minutes sliced off some opportunity to explore more emotional drama, and I agree. Kinda get the pay-off way at the end, and it's not really 100% clear what she's doing with the bag - and why a bag? - until the ashes scatter (far too few ashes, by the way).

Anyways, the actors did a good job. Much to be proud of for each of them.

I'm a little bored with kids being cast as 'kids' and would have liked to have seen a little more depth to them besides just being 'girls'. It would have made the pain of loss a little deeper and sincere. There could have been a bond beyond just a jar of goodies, though I know that stuff is mega-important in a child's eye.

Don't be afraid to make a good script better!!

Nice film, Robbie and Kegan. Already looking forward to see what you do next!

Robbie, kudos to you and Kegan for this effort. Dammit, you actually touched me with it. You've come a long way and should be proud of this.

I would have liked to seen the ashes in a better container than a paper sack AND there needed to be more of them.

The girls' acting was all right, not the best, but served the story well.

Good job. This has been your best effort yet.

Robbie, Keegan - this was great! Its a nice simple story and you two did it justice. Congrats. Keep up the good work. Little things could be changed here or there (nothing that hasnt already been mentioned) but it was a nice looking picture and the story played out well - held my interest the entire time - hard to do :)

A nice film with some effective acting. I admire your use of a younger cast, it can be difficult at times but you seemed to get what you needed out of them. The music was a great choice and I liked the grading you chose to differentiate past/future. Good work

This had a really solid feel to it, folks, and I rated it highly. I really enjoyed this, but for me at least it was unclear on WHICH one had made it, and which one passed away. I was also confused as to what exactly she had spread, but I'm guessing perhaps the other girl's ashes?

Framing, audio, score, everything was pretty pro on this. Again, a good, sentimental film, which I enjoyed.

2nd rounds ...

The acting really is excellent all around. Only one line came across as stilted, and that was the bit about space suits. Otherwise, well done, and well directed.

I especially like the shot of the girls standing up as they face each other at the 2:07 mark.

Nice detail on using the green scarf to make it clear who we were seeing after 20 yrs (still not convinced you needed to super that).

Vast improvement over past fests.

Only two blips on detail, one I already mentioned about the ashes - paper bag and not nearly enough. Also, this round I see she drops the bag on the ground with a thud. Hardly seems respectful, assuming some of her friend is still in there??

The other blip is a jar buried for 20 years would have a rusty top that would be a bear to unscrew. Looked good as new.

Details matter!

Color is real nice on the two girls. Will make for some gorgeous screen grabs.

I'm sure the writer is pleased.

Kept me interested till the end, which is good. Very predictable. Wasn't a story (in my opinion) - we weren't allowed to predict or wonder how things would develop.

But the young girls' acting skills were strong enough to keep me watching till the end.

Congratulations.

I've never done it but it seems like it can be a little tricker to work with younger people. Granted, their not little little kids but still. It worked well and they gave storng performances. The grown woman did as well. Very good composition on your shots. For me, it was rather refreshing to see flashbacks with rich color and present day more washed out for a change. Thought it was an added compliment to the film. Good work!

Really impressed with this Robbie! By far your best work. The acting is great, and the film is emotional without pushing too hard.

Some lovely shots. Like the color timing of the different time periods. Ironically I did a similar thing in my film.

I would have liked a close-up on the paper bag, perhaps right after the very first shot of the movie, before we flash back. I didn't notice the bag at first, and so I didn't have the question in my mind of what was in it. You want to make sure you have a clear set up so that the pay off works properly.

The sound was very good. I especially liked the echoey effect on the singing when heard in the present. The only problem I had at all, and I don't know what would have improved it, was the sound as they crossed the bridge. It just had a weird quality to it.

I would have to say that the thing that really stood out to me here was the performances. Very very strong.

This is a great entry Robbie, and one that fully embraces the theme.

Robbie, I thought this was a nice film, but I could have done without the voice over and the shot at the end of the little girls disappearing. Both of those elements were just reiterating points that the movie has already made (the other girls is dead, their youth is gone), and I guess I just felt like it would have been stronger without them. As a viewer, I don't need to be told everything, you know?

The photography in the flashbacks was really nice, but it felt a little flat to me in the present day scenes. I did like the way you graded the different bits though. Nice job overall.

Nice film! I like how this came out.

I would have liked to see a bit more of a connection that the jar came out of the ground. I understand the ground was frozen solid, but even a heap of soil from the nursery suggesting it had been dug would have been enough. As it was, pawing at the frozen ground with her mittened hand and then having the jar was not convincing.

I liked the fadeout over the bridge at the end. Not sure the swing pushing scene really added much. Maybe those seconds could have been used in some other way. Didn't detract, just didn't really add anything for me.

Score was great, composition of shots was really nice

Hey! Very impressed by this - congrats to everyone - a really solid little film that did a good job avoiding the potential for cheesiness. Strong performances and great sound add depth and that score is fantastic! Very glad you didn't use my song in the end - wouldn't have stood up alongside Herman's work at all.

Basically well done - a solid springboard to future successes! Should a springboard be solid? Oh never mind...great job!!!! :)
