DVXUSER.COM PRESENTS LossFest
Theme: Loss
Something or someone is gone; maybe a loved one, a family heirloom, a pet, innocence, your favorite toy, a memory, your way, or your own self. What is born of this loss? Hopelessness, a new beginning, or something else.
You might look to the stages of the grieving process (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%BCbler-Ross_model) for inspiration, maybe pick one to explore, or don't. Perhaps your characters are better off without the thing they've lost, though it may take some time for them to realize. Or, perhaps life is now unlivable.
Will they find what's been lost or remain without it forever? Who knows? Only you.
But remember, characters that actively pursue a goal are usually much more interesting than those who just sit around feeling sorry for themselves.
Rules (please read carefully, we HAVE MODIFIED the rules)
Films can be in any genre as long as they adhere to the above theme. If you have any questions about whether your film conforms to the theme please ask.
Films may not exceed six minutes and ten seconds (6:10) total. This includes the DVXuser Leader (approx. 10 seconds), the film and any credits.
Minimum of one frame of ending credits required
The following elements must be included:
Film Title - any format and can appear anywhere in the film
Credits - at least one frame of complete credits must appear at the end of the film.
DVXuser leader -- this must be at the beginning of your film--no exceptions! (the runtime of the leader does not count against your six minutes).
UPDATE 02/28/09
You may modify the leader in the following ways:
Sound - You may discard the supplied audio and instead have silence, music, ambient noise, dialogue from your film, or any other audio that more appropriately sets the tone of your film or helps you tell your story.
Black and White - You may change the leader to black and white (only, not green or red, etc.) if doing so helps set the mood of your film or helps you tell your story
"Made For" Text - you can, and are encouraged to actually, add "made for DV/Xuser Loss fest", "made for" "Official Selection DVXuser Loss Fest" "Official Selection" or text along those lines to the leader.
Ask if you plan to modify the leader in any other way.
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE LEADER HERE:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=163532
REQUIRED ELEMENT: In the spirit of Loss Fest you've already lost one thing ... the required element. There is no required element for this film.
All cameras are eligible to participate for prizes.
Content must be "R" rated or lower. If you are unsure; ASK.
No copyright violations, you *must* use licensed or royalty-free music.
All filmmakers agree to grant DVXuser.com and its agents non-exclusive rights for their films to appear on a DVD or for DVXuser-sanctioned public screenings.
Deliverables must be provided as an h.264 compressed file (either .mov or .mp4) with a maximum size of 50 MB.
No actual footage from the final entry may be published in any form prior to March 13, 2009.
All aspect ratios are acceptable.
Contest open to every country and films may be in any language. Non-English films must have English subtitles.
All films must be made between November 17, 2008 and March 9, 2009 and must not have been publicly screened prior to the start of viewing. The entry deadline is 11:00am Pacific Time on March 9, 2009 (The upload system will be open from March 2, 2009 - March 9, 2009)
Rating is limited to members with a minimum of 50 posts on the site. Other restrictions may be announced when rating is opened.
Films may be entered in other festivals as long as they aren’t screened prior to March 13, 2009.
All films will be prescreened by DVXFest staff for compliance with festival rules. Entries that aren't approved will be notified by a moderator and may be re-submitted with corrections up until the deadline. The festival moderators have sole and final say, on a case by case basis if necessary.
No entry fee.
You may enter up to two films as the primary filmmaker. There is no limitation to how many films you may work on.
Prizes, if any, will be announced.
Uploading details will be provided on Monday, March 2, 2009. When screening opens, films will be listed for viewing in the order received, not alphabetically.
DVXuser Moderators and Festival staff members are welcome to enter a film and have it rated by the fest viewers. However they are not eligible to receive prizes.
You are encouraged to promote the DVXfest outside of DVXuser.
You may also promote your individual entry outside of DVXuser for the purpose of drawing attention to the fest and to let people know about the work you are involved in. This promotion is not to include vote begging. You may talk about the project you are involved in with the intention of garnering interest in both your film and in the festival, not to drum up voter support. You must also include mention of the DVXFest (including a direct link to the fest - not just your individual entry).
DVXuser and DVXfest does not condone spam - these allowances for external promotion do not give license to spam on their behalf. Any sign of distribution of spam will be ground for immediate disqualification.
* DVXuser reserves the right to modify, clarify and/or otherwise alter the rules for DVXfest until December 7, 2008. Be sure to occasionally check for any updates.

Outside promotion is nice as well. And here I am not entering this time around... oh well. :)
Good luck, guys!
Sounds like it's going to be an interesting fest. Can't wait to see all the entries.

Depressing Fest! Lol. Hopefully not.
For Twilight Fest there was the comedic entry about the lost button. Quite funny I thought. I bet we'll see several comedies.
If I had the time, I would like to do one of each (light comedy and dark depressing drama)... or maybe combine them... hmmmm... off to the brainstorming facility (pub).

glad you're back! I'm bringing my lights and gear up from Atlanta first week of December, so we're going to be totally kitted out. We should all get together in T.O. and line out the projects so we can all help each other over the next 3 months.
Wow. Nice. With the holidays coming up, I don't know that I'll have time for this round. But, I've already got a few ideas bouncing around. Perhaps a sequel to "Four", just to keep things light? :)

Well, as usual, here is the obligatory: "Maybe I will actually enter this time..." Penguin post. :D It's possible, I've got access to good actors and crew, so we'll see.
The rules look good. The only thing I would complain about would be the order that the films are listed for voting/viewing. In TwilightFest the zips contained the entries alphabetically while they were listed in the order received on the voting page -- this made it difficult to go quickly back and forth from viewing and voting, so could we possibly keep the order consistent? Just a petty thing, but I thought I would ask. :) Thanks!

6 minutes for the entire short? Oh boy, that's going to be a toughy. Especially with the material I plan on using.
6 minutes is plenty of time - depending on your story. If you can't fit it into 6 minutes, you are either telling the story wrong, or telling the wrong story.

Hi all,
Yesterday I watched "Bridge to Terabithia" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398808/) and was surprised that it is more a movie about loss instead of being a fantasy film, which I expected due to the trailers. I suggest that you watch it. Might be a useful source of inspiration.

AVI isn't an option? If you can export an AVI, then you can compress to h.264 using Quicktime Pro.
There are several threads outlining this workflow during every fest.
First things first though - export your movie as an AVI.

First things first: MAKE the movie. Then worry about compression or whatnot. that's the easiest part of the process and you have plenty of time to figure it out... but doesn;t matter if you don't HAVE a movie.

Would a guy getting dumped while playing a game of one on one b-ball fit the theme of loss? How about a mystery pertaining to the disappearance of a mother's anti-itch butt cream?
Supplemental question...are we allowed to show naked female bosoms in our films?

Mark Harris,
I have made several short films and have a couple on youtube and Vimeo. I've had three in film festivals: two at universities and one in a local festival. The point I am trying to make here is that not all of us can afford to have high end NLEs and/or Mac computers (I wouldn't want a Mac, anyway). I have tried using programs to convert MPEG2 to MPEG4 and the results have been unsatisfactory. So why are the DVXfests so limited as to the format allowed? True, not having an entry in the LossFest is not going to make or break me as a filmmaker. There are too many other venues open to me and others like me. It's just that I thought it might be fun to try this one.
Amr Rahmy
12-28-2008, 10:25 PM
there are tons of open source applications that do just that transform anything to mp4(h.264 or x.264) that is compatible with quicktime.
or you could use quicktime pro.
maybe future fests would incorporate vimeo as an option for people since about every member uses it and is familiar with it anyway.

QT Pro is about $30.00 and can be used on a PC. It can take >1GB files and compress them below 50MB. The compressed file still ends up looking great.

there are tons of open source applications that do just that transform anything to mp4(h.264 or x.264) that is compatible with quicktime.
or you could use quicktime pro.
maybe future fests would incorporate vimeo as an option for people since about every member uses it and is familiar with it anyway.
This popular and free converter is pretty good:

Other sites are adding support for Vimeo players, I guess DVXuser should too.

Quick question: If I am entering Loss fest but don't have 50 posts, will i still be able to vote. Most likely i'll get to 50 in time once I begin production--i'll probably have plenty of questions. but just wondering in case...

Can audio run over the DVXUser trailer? For example can dialogue and music start while the trailer is running?

Question re: peripheral content. Right now, Erik Olsen has created some items surrounding his sort, an insurance company, banner ads, etc.
Is it all right to extend this kind of thing to say a TV commercial that goes along with the world of the short?
Was this question ever answered?

Unless the rules change, in the last fest this was permitted.

Who exactly do I ask about whether or not my film fits the required elements? To be specific, there are things in my short that will be "at loss" rather than completely lost. How can I tell if this is acceptable or not?

OK, I finally have something to do for a fest. If we can promote the festival outside DVXuser, is it ok if I grab that "Lossfest" graphic at the top and use it as a link from my own page?

it's already been used outside on the Facebook page so I think that's a definite. Helps with the look of the "marketing campaign". The Mods okayed it for Facebook.

Quick question: the rule states that we cannot publicly screen the film prior to March 13th, but what about on March 13th? In the next two weeks I will start production on several shorts film for a showcase, and I think that one of them in particular will fit Lossfest well. The showcase however is scheduled for the 13th so I'm not sure if this violates any fest rule.

Probably too late to do whatever you were going to do since you posted your question 6 weeks ago, but I will say yes you can create all the multimedia peripheral content you want as long as it doesn't include actual moving footage of the film.

On the 13th is fine as long as it's not streaming on the internet.

so...i have a question about music that may or may not have been asked before.
Would one be allowed to use the international legality loophole? Meaning, if they were to use music (particularly asian music) that doesn't have copyright legality in the US, does that count as legit?
Jack Daniel Stanley
02-24-2009, 07:53 PM
Nope. Sorry. In addition to the vast stock archives on the internet and artists like Moby giving their stuff away for free now there are several composers posting here that can emulate almost anything you throw at them.
There's just really no reason or need to bend loopholes or anything anymore. If you need something ethnic I can recommend Sid Barnhoorm and Herman Whitkam. There are likely other composers that are around now that could do it for you but these are the two I have worked with the most and I know they both specialize in several ethnic instruments.

Use of the leader rules updated and links to the leader posted.
Check the first post of this thread or go here:

Basically you can have dialogue running under your leader now. So if you've been killing yourself trying to get the cut down to 6 minutes this may help.
Jason Ramsey

Note, this was done, b/c there was a lack of clarity in the rules. For, veterans of the fest, the original wording was likely clear. But, for folks who may not be veterans, we recognized that the wording about the length and the inclusion of the leader implied more than it did state explicitly.
So, we have decided it is in everyone's best interest and the most on the level thing to make the rules more accommodating since they were not clear enough in their wording. We have not taken anything away from anyone. We have added.
Later,
Jason

So, seeing how we are past the 13th, can we post these on out websites?

Jack Daniel Stanley
03-15-2009, 03:34 PM
Sorry Alex, but no.
We'll clarify that rule a bit more in the future.
But the no footage prior to 3/13 means no footage of ANY kind prior to 3/13 and then on 3/13 you could upload the ACTUAL footage (the film) ... here. So no footage anywhere prior, and then yes footage here after. It's not meant to imply that you can upload it elsewhere as well after the 13th. As I said though, we'll clarify that in the future and make it explicit.
Our reasoning is a level playing field. Everyone is screened in the same format in the same file size / bitrate restrictions, etc.
To further clarify: yes you can screen at a live fest or university after 3/13 because none (or likely very few) of the voters can see that. But no you can't screen anywhere else online until voting closes because that would go against the same format / restrictions in screening etc, and elligibl voters could all go watch it there instead.

With the finalists announced, are the rest of us free to post our films on other sites for viewing?
Larry Rutledge

Yes, if you are not a finalist you are now free to publish your films publicly. If you are a finalist, however, we request you not publish publicly until the second round of rating completes.
