Update - 11/18/08 1013AM - Just got my second good idea!!! We'll see if its still good by the time I'm done with it! My first good idea was to take the slightly undercooked pizza that was delivered last night and finish cooking it in the oven - freakin genius! Ya'll best watch out!
Update - 11/18/08 1059AM - Have finished fleshing out the idea! Now we'll wait an hour and see if it sucks. If it doesnt its off to make it even awesomer. Almost lunchtime - Frozen tempura chicken. Well, I'm going to heat them up. MMMM.

11-18-2008, 09:17 AM
Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. This is my first fest and my first attempt at narrative work. I've got some experience working on others shorts, and have always wanted one of my own. Looking forward to the experience and seeing how this all works out.
Oh and Rodney, yeah those are your keys. I'll leave them on the counter after I loot the place and steal the car - is that cool?
Rodney V. Smith
11-18-2008, 09:19 AM

Well, okay... just leave my HVX AND my keys and we'll be happy.
Jeff Anderson
11-18-2008, 09:24 AM
Yeah, I'm mostly just looking from something to eat - leave me some decent leftovers in the fridge or the HVX is mine! Donuts are always good too. Love those ones with the sugar and cinnamon all over em... mmmmmm.

And now you have the greatest (or worst, depending on your point of view) thread guest ever! And don't worry, I WILL stay. :) Looking forward to this, Jeff. I got to the last page and realized there was no comment box. I thought the thread was closed down for some reason and then I saw that (for some other reason) I was not logged in...which is odd. Anyway, you couldn't keep me out forever so here I am! If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask!

Inspired by the great Zak Forsman, here is the first of many video updates on this project - today, we meet the dogs. Sorry for the camera phone quality - makes it too easy to do...

5 is my limit on dogs. not enough couches, takes too long to feed any more. And they stop fitting so well in the van. Beagles... eh... came with my wife. Barks alot and is 5 or 6 times smarter than me. Does her own thing. No one can really stop her. Caught her welding something in the garage the other day...
Yes. Wine in a box... whats it to ya? :)
Glad you saw my temporary vision. That's what I'm really going for this piece as an artist. I thought about going for more of a permanent thing, but I keep losing my vision - get it? losing! BWAAAHHAHAHAHA!

You know I'm getting fond of those keys. Everytime I lose mine, I just have to come and look at your poster and boom! my keys show up right in front of me (i usually leave them in front of the keyboard and they tend to slip down). Your poster is the patron saint of lost keys!

Ok, ok, ok... Been letting this get away from me as I wrap (or at least try to...) some work projects and then there was Thanksgiving and now I'm in Chicago (steadicam workshop - yay!). Excuses excuses but I've been keeping this in the back of my head and thinking alot about how I want to approach this.
Script finally took some shape after some fantastic consultation with the fantastic Sarah Daly. Needs some final spit and polishing and it will be done. I'm liking and feeling good about it though. Hoping to lock it down and call it done by the end of the week. Still no Title. Something will show up soon I'm sure though...
I mentioned that I've been thinking alot about how I want to approach this. I've never directed narrative (nor written for it), just corporate. Usually boring stuff where emotion and life wasnt a priority. Me getting paid and illustrating the point the client wanted was. Bleck. Anyways we are done with that and moving along. So I've been thinking alot about what seperates the movies that truly impress me from the ones that dont. Its not any one thing for sure. I could name a list and get into the technicalities of it all but thats not the point. Or maybe it is. Well the point is that the point isnt about the technicalities and doing something this way or another. Have been reading and re-reading Tarkovsky's "Sculpting in Time." Fantastic book if you haven't read it. The insight is flat out amazing. I periodically come across certain passages that I just have to sit and digest and re-read for a moment.
The Steadicam workshop I'm currently in middle of has also given me alot of inspiration in a few ways. First steadicam is freakin hard as hell and mastering it will take years and 1000's of hours of work. Looking forward to it. Peter Abraham, the instructor also gave a great little talk today about the blend of mechanical and organic. You can show up and get the shots and point the camera where you are told and go home or you can show up and make the camera a piece of the movie (or whatever it is). Not by any means groundbreaking theory but the little nuances in his handling and his that were initially imperceptible add sooooo much to the scene and all of these little things just let the scene breathe and speak and do its thing. Cool to see all the parts come together like that.
Not really sure what all of this means for how I'm going to shoot MY film but its definitely given me alot to think about and some good inspiration to help make this a piece of me.
Would add in a video update of the crappy hotel with the pop machine that requires no money (yep thats right - free PEPSI!!!!!!!), but the wifi that travelocity listed doesnt exist so I'm bluetoothing through my cell to the internet... Too much connecting and reconnecting to try and upload video with the whole mess. Just imagine a place that is old and sucky (but clean) and thats it. Cheap rate though. oh and free HBO! Later lossfesters...

Yeah I dont know what that post is about either - it was part of the I'm bored and tired lets play on the internet campaign I started last night. Way too cold to go do anything here... Windchill is like 0. We just got an inch or two of snow overnight as well. Should make for a fun day :) I miss Oklahoma where the snow just melts when it hits the ground...
Yeah lets definitely figure something out and meet up Ted! I'll PM you when I get back in town this week. Wait lake a wager like I might not finish? How about like I bet you can't make me buffalo wings - loser has to make me buffalo wings? How's that for a wager? :)

Yes, Tom. As do I. However, Mr. Anderson expressed concern that, as an Oklahoman, he could not risk the opprobrium that might befall him if risque images would happen to be juxtaposed with his name. As he put to me last night, "Mr. Johnson, please I implore you. I would become a veritable pariah in the Sooner State if unseemly graphics should happen to be retrieved by youngsters using that thing they call "Google" on my good name. Now, I enjoy an occasional sketch or photograph of a comely lass, given she be full clothed. However, the internet is no place for sexual graphics."

Nice... Had the same dream but it was Barry Green... Then he started to wrestle some guy in a Sony shirt to the ground... Maybe I'll go build some 20 foot tall clapping hands to show my applause for my dream...

Two weeks ago I had spaghetti. It was pretty good. I got a drink of pepsi and I accidentally spilled some on the ground. But it was no big deal, I cleaned it up after.

Dude, dont spill Pepsi in my thread. That's just screwed up.

Ok, actual update time!! Script is off in the hands of others for critiques and thoughts. Its finally in a place where I think its becoming a solid story. We'll see how delusional I really am... One portion in particular I'm just not sold on personally.
Looking to shoot this in mid to late January. Thats all I know / am willing to divulge for now. More to come soon.

Hey Jeff, I'm honored to be among the blue ribbon panel allowed to offer critiques of your script. I'd hoped to be back to you with my notes by now but got sidetracked with some crap. I'll definitely get them to you soon.

It's all good Mark - just watched a half a day go by myself - fried bowtie pasta. Good shit though. Just takes forever and a day to make a bunch. Undercook some bowties (a little less than al dente) soak in buttermilk (after cooling as to avoid curdling) toss in some italian breadcrumbs and fry in a couple inches of oil. A little salt, a little parmasean, and some green flaky things for color and you are set. Good shit.
You know Penguin... you could hang out in your own thread :)
And of course a huge holiday greetings back to the FM crew from Oklahoma!

And another month later! Well good news, bad news, and great news.
Bad news - no way this is going to get made in time for Loss Fest. :(
Good News - still making it!
Great News - Totally new concept and new direction (same theme), and I just feel a good 10-20x more happy and confident with this.
Right now I've got my small cast and crew assembled and we are preparing for our first official meeting. I kind of got sidetracked by the holidays and life and lost my gusto with this originally. Our own Zak Forsman's (among others) Sabi however re-ignited my desire to do this with their Sabi Fest slated with a deadline of July 4.
We're well on schedule and to get this done and well polished by then and quite looking excited about it. Meeting with soundman Josh Fisher tomorrow and will be doing a little podcast with him, sharing some of his insight and what he'll be bringing to the project.
Will also be updating the thread with the technical details of it all as well as some insights into the story. Sorry this won't be making it for Lossfest, but it will be getting done none the less.

Shooting on the Nikon D90 as its just an intriguing challenge and its low light abilities are really exciting. Looking forward to staying small and light with the camera as well.
Having never really shot at night I thought I'd take the old d70 out and do some tests with available light. We won't actually be shooting in these locations but ones with similar lighting. If nothing else it was a good exercise in using the existing light and making some images I'm really happy with at least.

A few more locations I want to test but havent gotten around to. Probably will do that sometime this week. Shooting at night is perhaps the most fun I've had with a camera in a while.

Awesome, Jeff. I am really excited to see the D90 in action in this fest, and to see people pushing it.
Have you decided how you're stabilizing it for hand-held stuff? Or are you going all tripod?
Jeff Anderson

Thanks guys, funny you mention handheld and the d90 - actually just started a review on Zacuto's DSLR setup that I'll be using. Will basically be a small shoulder-mount camera at the end of it all. Should be ready to post tomorrow and will of course have it up here. Will also be doing some periodic updates as to how it all works as things progress along.
Even without the Zacuto gear I think you could do it and keep it somewhat stable with locking your elbows in since its such a small camera. The follow focus and shoulder pad really help a bunch though and hopefully will keep any of the jello jiggle at bay and allow me to be a little more precise in focusing.

Yeah, I've had good luck by putting the strap around my neck and pulling the camera tight out in front of me, using the tense strap to keep it stable.
I am loathe to put too much of a rig on the D90, because to me that kind of eliminates one of it's best selling points - it's next to invisible footprint.
Jeff Anderson
02-14-2009, 08:34 PM
Good point on being just about invisible. I've got at least one scene I'll be shooting "naked" as to not draw attention. For most of this short though, being inconspicuous isnt all that important, although I'm glad to not be shooting on a 3 ft long 35mm rig :)
Thanks for the neck strap idea - will have to try that out.

Dude, wait till your shooting with a RED and your dumb-ass director tells you he wants a lot of hand-held. That RED ONE will make you WISH you had an HVX with adapter...It's basically like shooting with a Mini-Cooper on your shoulder. Poor Mike.
Are there pics of your rig? Also, the skater-dolly and D90 are a match made in heaven, if you have access to one.
Jeff Anderson
02-15-2009, 04:03 PM
Whole video of the rig should be posted up tomorrow :) Actually still waiting on a d90 (need to get that tax return deposited...) - but I've got a d70 in the rig right now. So no pics of the exact rig, but damn close. Real pics will be coming up soon.
Yeah RED on my shoulder sounds like no fun... I'm all about the tiny cameras :) Scarlet has me sold on size alone.

Actors! We have them! Got to have our first official meeting and wanted to introduce to the world Chandler B. Clark and Tyler Roberds. Both fantastic at their craft and just nice people to be around. We here at the MAXO-FACTO are pleased as punch to have them on board. Anyways just wanted to introduce them and let you MAXO-FACTOIANS get a chance to know them.
I apologize for my inability to focus - brought the 17-200 AFS VR along for the ride for versatility and it’s focus mechanism isnt the greatest for video. Sunlight hitting the LCD doesnt help either. Will be glad to be using manual focus lenses and be shooting at night http://www.maxo-facto.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif Also played a bit with some color correction.

Sorry I've been slow with updates, seems like the weeks are flying by.
Had a chance to sit down and teleconference with my actors and crew last sunday and it truly was an awesome experience. The plan was to do several read-throughs and see what worked and what didnt and kind of modify the script so that it fit. Also wanted to give my actors a chance to really get a feel for what I was intending with some of the emotions.
I was expecting it to be kind of a boring thing really, more mechanical and just a familiarization exercise. Ha! They rocked the house. Started out a little slow, but by the 3rd or 4th time they were just nailing it and bring it out parts of the character I had kinda forgotten about really. Totally added major substance to it. Soundman Josh also sat in and proved to be a really useful feedback mechanism and made a few suggestions that really helped the flow and the understanding of it from the viewer's perspective.
Needless to say I am in love with my cast and crew. These guys are impressive and are going to make me look good - just hope I can do the same for them.
Also have done a little night testing to make sure I know what I'm capable of light wise - the first of a series of tests is up at www.maxo-facto.com/blog as well as my thoughts on working with the D90. Will have more up later this week with a few other lighting situations...

Why isn't anyone commenting on my entry!!?! - oh yeah we haven't shot it yet... Damn. Anyways have some new updates on the story and a little look into the camera department up on the blog - www.maxo-facto.com/blog.
Had our second teleconference/read through last tuesday and it was just great. Fantastic group of people involved with this. Live rehearsals are this weekend. I'm totally stoked. As great as the teleconferencing has been working it will be a relief for us all as I know its hard to gauge emotion and of course body language over the phone. Just fun people to work with too - looking forward to seeing them again.
Should have some more testing done this weekend. If its anything earth shattering will post up here. We'll just see what we think :)
