Yeah you will kill this I'm sure.

Go go Ninja skills.

Always admired that you can make a really good films without the gimmicks / security blankets I seem to gravitate towards. This should be a great one for you.

Looking forward to it.

so right off the bat, I spent the afternoon with Jamie Cobb, the editor of HEART OF NOW (http://www.sabipictures.com/heartofnow). We were in the Atlanta airport waiting for our flight to LAX when I read about LossFest on my iphone. We immediately began discussing some ideas for the LOSS theme. in the interest of transparency, some of the key points of the discussion were as follows...

---pitches for a framework for a story: something that moves much faster and tighter than IFHY (http://www.sabipictures.com/ifhy), but that resonates on a similar (very human) level.
---"blue sky" session (meaning no ideas are bad ideas at this point) where we throw out ideas for scenes, dialogue, ways to reveal story and character beats, etc.
---listed the obvious choices for this theme and pitfalls to avoid.
---actors we'd like to work with, Sabi regulars were named and some new faces too.
---potential for an unusually high level of collaboration between myself and other filmmakers.
---potential to incorporate a more interactive experience for the audience (you'll see!!!)
---potential to do what is essentially a short "proof of concept" from the WANDERLUST (http://www.sabipictures.com/wanderlust) universe of characters and storylines we are developing.
---a truly NO-BUDGET endeavor to make something real and compelling and beautiful to look at without throwing a bunch of money at the screen.

Good work, as always, Mark. Does this mean you will sit this one out again?

We don't want to get our asses kicked by SABI.

Seriously, we've really got our hands full currently. In addition to the stuff mentioned on our blog (http://www.fatmonsterfilms.com/fatmonsterblogger.html), it looks like we're going into preproduction next month for a nicely funded feature to be shot January/February. Details to be posted in the User Films section when the papers are inked.

I'm hoping we can help out some of the local teams who have been good enough to crew with us in the past. Maybe we'll be able to put together a monster crew for the next fest. ...

MATT GARRETT - DP
Today I had dinner with Matt Garrett. We discussed the project over Thai food. I think what sold him on the project was that I had absolutely zero money with which to pay him. haha! but seriously, we will resume talks in the near future. We are (likely) shooting this film with the Nikon D90 and will be brainstorming ways to take full advantage of that camera's low-light sensitivity. In other words, we agreed that if we will use the D90, then we need to make sure this is a film that could not have been shot on any other camera. And thematically, the webcam/camera phone "flaws" in the image must be inherently tied to the content of the film. anyway, more to come as this project develops.

MotionBox has been going down for maintanence and their 750mb limit per account is going to be a problem in the near future. So i've decided to go to YouTube. My philosophy is that the best tools and services for indie filmmakers are the most popular ones, not necessarily the best ones. And the reason I've picked YouTube over something like Vimeo will make itself very clear, very soon. Losing the embedded video sucks, but the trade-off will be well worth it.

Can't divulge why exactly. Not just yet...

If I remember correctly from when I was down in L.A. over the Summer, Matty's SABI pass ended up in the hands of some waitress. Perhaps you retrieved it for him, Mark? Odd that I should recall this, I know, but I have a way of retaining random tid-bits. :)

Tonight, in researching my developing story, I came across a phrase that simplified everything I've had swimming around in my head to three small words.

"Loss is change."

So i've taped those words to the top of my laptop's monitor so their resonance will continue to guide me. Wanting everything to be the same as it was before the loss is the obstacle. And this is impossible to attain; the person is transformed. We move forward by accepting this reality.

Not just yet...

maybe I can set up some other video embed bb codes... I'm a little scared about youtube though for some reason (I mean allowing them to be embedded here)...

Loved your podcasts.

I hope that along with charting the process of making your film, that you will also talk about the promotional/marketing side of things as well. You do it very well, and I think folks (myself included) could learn a lot from it.

Later,
Jason

An interesting day yesterday. It started with meetings at the Gaucho Grill on Ventura and moved to Monster Shack East where we got into Luis' liquor & cereal malt beverages.

Zak Forsman and Matty G. arrived with the ever delightful Long Beach Girl.

Testosterone was flowing which led to discussions that escalated to arguments and disputes. Being the alpha males we are, it was determined that the only way to resolve these controversies was through a blood sport: bowling.

Matty G. threw the gauntlet at young master Hyten and the stocky Guatemalan Luis challenged yours truly. Due to my advanced age and crippling war injuries, Luis generously offered me a handicap of 40 pins. I quickly seized the opportunity and the only thing left was to determine the stakes of these awesome wagers.

When one's pride and manhood is on the line what possible prize could be sufficient to humiliate one's foe while pumping up one's ego? Sexual favors from one's girlfriend came to my mind first, but the absence of a distaff counterpart in The Dude's social life precluded such terms. More beer and whiskey were consumed and finally the perfect solution was decided upon: the losers would be required to purchase indoor RC helicopters for the victors (and not those crappy $20 helicopters that Luis has -- no, these had to be minimum purchase price $80 beauties! (http://www.nitroplanes.com/3chdohoapfir.html))

Mr. Forsman and his magical micro camera accompanied us to the local lanes where the field of battle would commence. http://www.archivisuals.com/BowlingNite.jpg

Before combat was joined on the alleys, food was consumed at the cafe accompanied by various insults and threats. Eventually we were attired in the multi-colored shoes required by the sport and the contests began. Luis was brilliant through the seventh frame and was handily kicking my ass well beyond the 40-pin advantage (in spite of my nickname I am, as a bowler, a better golfer). Matty and Tim were locked in a furiously even-handed match for their part.

Eventually divine intervention in the form of electronic malfunction of the pinsetter led to our party being moved to another set of lanes. The result was Luis collapsing like a cardtable as his string of spares came to an abrupt halt. On track for a score of 180, Luis was able to squeeze out only 135 while my loins were girded to throw a smashing (for me) 98. Matty stumbled and was unable to put away the drunk asian to whom he succumbed by about 8 pins I believe. It was glorious.

Fresh from victory we drove to Hollywood and Highland to celebrate at Hooters. We were joined by the irrepressible MIKE INSANE who rocks beyond measure. ZAK telephoned Jamie (aka Forsman Woman) and always popular actor OLIVER NOBLE arrived at the same time as professional guitarist DANE MARKINSON. Finally, the second place finishing Twilight Fest team (Work of Art) of MIKE MANNING and WES BARKER arrived to pound brews with us.

http://www.archivisuals.com/DudeHooters.jpg

Eventually we left at about 1:00 a.m. losing ZAK, JAMIE, MATTY G., LONG BEACH GIRL, MIKE, WES and OLIVER. We ended up at Big Wang's where MIKE INSANE picked up the tab after my BOA card strangely was declined (where's my bailout dammit, Obama?). Many props to LUIS, TIM, MIKE, and AMAZING BRUCE who joined us late. You guys know how to party.

I have located a 39 buck micro wireless camera (http://www.xheli.com/hemiwivica.html) (9 grams) that we are going to mount on one of our new helicopters. We plan to use it to do a podcast with ZAK as soon as Luis ponies up the bucks for the prizes!

met with Daniel Carmody. after a prior discussion where I threw all my ideas at him, he went home for the weekend and began writing, fueled by eight cups of espresso. he had issues with what he'd developed on his own and I made some suggestions that seemed to stick. two characters, one young woman, one young man. she is pretty well defined. he, not so much. but tonight, Daniel and I found we are on the same page in how we want to shape this story. so it's official. we're writing the screenplay together.

MARY ELISE HAYDEN
MARY ELISE is one of my favorite people. Have you ever met someone and felt like "that person is so cool and talented i wish we were friends". i feel that way about her. mary elise brings an unpretentious edge, and her performance in HEART OF NOW is a clear standout. our time working together on that production was too brief and i'm so glad to have the opportunity to collaborate with her once more. she also has a wonderful, supercool manager.

http://www.isarapix.org/pix96/1227678600.jpg
DUSTY SORG
Oh man. This f*cking guy. DUSTY is a mad genius. he is soooo earnest in his performances that his comedy never feels like schtick or over the top. it's all very genuine. And his ability to engage with another actor is grounded in the truth of that moment. he adapts and moves like few others and makes it look so effortless. it's a rare ability he has. I like him.

the D90 is 24p. :) even so, i WILL have to retime the footage to 23.98 in compressor.

Hey Zak, have you had any success with this process and if so, would you mind sharing your settings? I've yet to successfully convert D90 to 23.98 through compressor while keeping the image quality intact.

Cinema Tools has a done a good job of conforming 24 to 23.98, but it doesn't take care of the audio sync issues, so I'm still on the hunt for a process that will do both without sacrificing quality.

Zak Forsman
12-03-2008, 06:40 PM
i was able to retime it to 100.1% (or 99.9%, i forget which) and that held sync. not perfectly. but pretty close. I think I simultaneously converted to ProRes at the same time.

PODCAST SIX (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LEpBz5lHt0&fmt=18) - FIRST CAST & CREW MEETING
Myself, Daniel Carmody, Jamie Cobb, Matt Garrett and actors Mary Elise Hayden and Dusty Sorg have our first cast and crew meeting to further develop the short film. Whenever possible, I like to let actors pick their character names to help give them a sense of ownership. More and more, these characters will become less mine and less Dan's, and truly owned and defined by Dusty and Mary Elise.

written by Daniel J. Carmody...

HENRY – “Hello, is there anybody out there?”

Turn of the century size 7 British oxfords lay like Irish wolfhounds at the ready next to the still feet of Henry, mid-twenties, distinctly dressed in thrift clothes bigger then his body yet smaller then his brilliance. An adventure-tarnished silver pocket watch rebelliously races along on the desk in front of him. His eyes closed, his mind elsewhere, A series of bright colors repeat over the peaceful demeanor painted across his face. His laptop, opened, displaying a video on repeat of a man playing guitar on a busy street corner, cut to surfers crashing against the glory of unsettled surf, cut to miles of white Christmas lighted traffic running across an endless highway, cut to garbage sailing in the breeze then hastily testing the resilience of a chain link fence, cut to Henry. His eyes rarely making acquaintances with the camera, he instead keeps is eyes off in the distance, searching.

An overexcited voice follows the sound, a door closing. Henry comes to, blinks blankly at the screen of his laptop and quickly shuts it, trapping the luminosity of his visual journal safely inside. He slips on his shoes, gets out of his chair and slips on a long tarnished wool coat, placing his cherished timepiece inside his left inner coat pocket. He lastly grabs a scarf off the top of his room door which had been left ajar the whole time.

She stands there in the shadow of the kitchen cupboard at the end of the hallway. Her breathing sounds like distant echoes of hope from a time long before the silence that filled the void between them now. To say that the resurfaced tile that dotted the hallway was the only thing that stood between them would be a lie. The coldness of the void worked its way to the back of his neck, and quickly he was filled with that nagging sense of loneliness that he couldn’t cure. He searched for a less pathetic reason for his forthcoming absence, yet couldn’t find anything less truthful then, “I have to step out to get something.” Only at the last second before heading to the apartment deck did he gesture to an empty box of cigarettes on the top of coffee table as if that were a viable reason for leaving.

His coat blows in the cool breeze of the winter night, the sun slowly recedes behind a skyscraper in the distance. Below, thousands of lit windows highlight the path to the city that beckons his presence below. The breeze swells up from below carrying the sounds of rush hour traffic and the wonderful smell of chicken dumplings from the Korean restaurant on the corner. Like the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, Henry takes a worried look at his timepiece then descends down the fire escape to the city below.

NICOLETTE – “My beats or my fist in your face, both are sticky sweet.”

Neon orange translucent plasticity in the form of thin celluloid sunglasses stands between her closed eyes and the crowd of swelling bodies below. Strands of her straight licorice black bangs repeatedly get caught in the paranoia of the dangling dim yellow lights from above. If you could get close to her, you would smell reminisce of gin, Blue Curacao, sweet and sour and a little pineapple juice on the tips of her lips. The bartender called it a Blue Moon; she called it a f*cking vacation. To say that it was warm in this bar would be a gross injustice to the truth; she didn’t give a f*ck how hot it was. Dressed in a long white v-neck, grey tapered pants all wrapped in a long thin black coat accented by a yellow scarf. Let's just say she wasn’t there to drink or to hook up with your friend.

Her name, Nicolette, Nic to most, at this moment she was neither. Instead she swayed in a trance-like state in front of sticker-riddled laptop sandwiched by two matching vintage turntables. She is guarded by a row of beautifully kept multi-colored records, 10 inch, 12 inch, and 8 inch all arranged in chronological order in which she came into possession of them. She truly wouldn’t have it any other way. Her long beautiful fingers raced like greyhounds along the deep black groves of a vinyl record. Her eyes open to reveal the sea of people below, their true organic actions, emotions, imminent futures and fates, are in the command of her sticky beats.

Deep within her stomach was that unsettling feeling that something was out of place. Her eyes dart across her setup checking that all sound levels are in that sweet spot. Checked, double-checked everything was right. Calmness spread over her; swiftly she switched up the beat, she put on that aggressive front so no one would be the wiser. Then he caught her eye; he was standing at the door. For how long had he been there? She quickly fell into that introverted state which she dreaded. It was dark, grey, cold and unforgiving; this was like death to a girl that dreamed only in vivid colors. Looking oh so lost and alone as if she was suddenly on an island surrounded by people instead of water. Strange unfamiliar faces covered the room except for his. Her shivery could not be quelled, not here, not in this room, not in this city and certainly not with him only a glance away. She raised her arms and held her hands out above her head. She held them there until his attention was all hers. Slowly she lowered four of her fingers on each hand until he got the message that she wasn’t about to hold a sermon.

it's a little deceiving. we had to go to the end of the line where everyone got off. and could only ride it from there, back to the first stop before it filled up. we'll keep doing that in a loop for each take.

PRODUCTION UPDATE
Last night MARY ELISE HAYDEN and I shot a scene for ELOQUENT GRAFFITI. the "footy" turned out really well. I have the hugest love/hate relationship with this Nikon. it's so small and compact I can go anywhere with it and no one bugs me because they think i'm a photographer. they just wonder why my flash never goes off. I can swap out lenses, it is INTENSELY cinematic given the operator has an eye for composition, color and luminance. on the other hand, the compression is a killer and softens the image to the degree that it might as well be SD blown up to HD, and its only 720p HD.

MARY ELISE is really compelling in the scene. I will post some screengrabs later. and if you're wondering... no, we don't have the script yet. still developing the story. :)

in the last six months I've actually befriended Arin Crumley, and Lance Weiler, as I F*cking Hate You was the winner of their From Here To Awesome project. Both have been a guiding force as I experiment with the evolving principles of indie filmmaking, so there is a bit of bias when I say "yes, I am a Four Eyed Monsters fan." and luckily for me, Arin was an IFHY fan. :)

I wish I could drum up the kind of drama that went on in the FEM podcasts. Haha! Why do you ask?

I am a fan as well, and while all your podcasts have had hints of Four Eyed Monsters, in the latest one, when you have yourself saying what the podcast is going to look like while we see it ("cast does intro, then titles, then cut to me"), it seems VERY Four Eyed Monsters.

That was a long sentence.

They let us in on the process of making the podcast, as do you. One of my favorite Four Eyed Monsters podcast moments is when Arin is trying to get his and Susan's heads to be the same size in the frame.

oh yeah! i remember that one. i like the one where Susan cant stop laughing and Arin's intro ends with "what's your problem?" i think its the first one. that moment probably endeared them to a lot of their first fans. it's killing me not to share the footage we shot tonight. we decided about three weeks ago that the film would begin around midnight on new year's eve based on something Mary Elise said about this being the time when so many people decide it's time for a change.

I can't wait for you to see Henry (Dusty Sorg) celebrating the new year in a crowd of thousands but essentially alone with fireworks blasting overhead and the confetti flying around and he's trying to feel good about it like everyone else he sees, but there's this weight dragging his spirits down and he can't help but to think of... her.
