Black balance?

I'm familiar with white balance, but this is the first cam I have had that has a setup for black balance. I want to be sure I understand the approach correctly - do you really perform the black balance setup using a white sheet of paper? On page 40 of the Operating Instructions manual it says to "Set the conditions for white balance adjustment before proceeding", which implies using a white sheet of paper.

the black balance calibration closes the iris so it doesnt matter what you are pointing it at.
