Hi!

I'm a proud owner of a Canon HF10 and have so far been usin a Shure SM58 mic togheter with it. To do this, I've simply been using a cord that has the appropiate mini plug connection at the end and I've been satisfied with the result. However, now I want to invest in a shotgun mic and I've decided for the Rode NTG-2.

My question is if I will be able to use the same setup for this mic (which is phantom powered by an internal battery) or if I need to invest in some kind of separate amplifier. The reason I ask is because I've seen a lot of people around different forums on the net who has this setup but also got one of these external boxes. Is this really necessary or could I do without it?

you should get an XLR adapter. The impedence rates of the NTG-2 aren't meant to match a mini 1/8 inch jack. You will get sound using the method you are using, but it won't be very good sound.
