whoops forgot to mention. All the shots on the street, or on the crane (anything moving) are HMC150, anything still on a tripod is HVX. The street shots were in extremely low light, and I boosted the mids like a mofo.

awesome for showing this.. this is what I wanted to see for a while. How do you like the 150? What are you editing on? Do you have any high res video side by sides or anything?
cheers and great stuff

Thanks a lot. I'll try to get some screenshots later, I'm about to go shoot another project!
I liked the 150 a lot in terms of convenience. It's extremely light weight (at least after using an HVX it feels like a handicam). My favorite part about it was that it shoots very well in low light. Even if there was some grain (this was only in EXTREMELY low light), the grain was very smooth and more film-like. This is a major advantage to the HVX. Not to mention, shooting on a 16GB SD card was pretty nifty as well. I never had to dump footage on set, which was pretty awesome.
I had one major issue with the HMC150, and you can see it in my video. Massive artifacting throughout my footage. I understand it's a transferring issue in Final Cut, but I'm pretty upset that they didn't have this ironed out before release. Randomly throughout my footage, I would get huge artifacts. Luckily it happened mostly before we called action. Though I had to use one shot that had some artifacting (not as bad as other instances). You can see it at 1:37. Watch in HQ and it's more visible.

Nice comparisons. There seems to be very little difference among the images, except for perhaps slight differences in dynamic range and iso. The song and video were terrific as well. I certainly got a kick out of it.

I have yet to upload this to Vimeo, but I'll get on that ASAP. I have to say though, when it comes to Youtube (and for video, most web traffic does), these two cameras perform very well as a package. The image is extremely similar.
The only differences I can see in the end product is that the depth of the color is a bit weaker in the HMC— though it obviously can take in more light (like two stops worth!).
If you're shooting on-the-go, natural light, or shooting anything that requires lengthy shots (events, documentary), I'd go with the HMC 150.
If you're shooting really set up shots with controllled lighting, I'd go with the HVX 200.

I think that the low light is a lot closer on the 200a or 170.. but the images are so close, that's why I went with it.. and so happy to have the 150. it makes things as easy as shooting tape.. and now
My HVX is the B cam and stays in the bag more times than it comes out. The LCD alone is worth the upgrade and the 200a doesn't have a very good LCD either...

yeah not quite sure what they were thinking putting an LCD that doesn't have enough detail to see whether or not a shot is soft!

I think that was the universally hated part about the original HVX but the new LCDs look pretty darn good by comparison... Panasonic listened to its users from this site and improved this and put on the image flip option as well. The other big thing that I love is that the volume controls are now on the side like the DVX was. With the HVX, it was easy if you were on sticks, but handheld audio adjustments would mean a little bit more work to do than having it on the side.

the cameras are very close in comparison. i really like the look of the 150 a lot, the workflow needs to get a little better though. song was funny as hell too
