Wow, this thing was hidden. I would have never seen it if I wasn't looking for the Scripfest II section.

I hope I can write something for this. I will give it a try.

Awesome cheers Isaac.

Any formatting requirements?

P U L P

Sounds like fun.

Question #1:

Do we get extra credit points if we have a character drinking a glass of pulp-filled orange juice? Okay, maybe not the best idea for a scene requirement. (Sorry, but I immediately thought of orange juice when I saw PULP as the theme.)

Question #2

Can we fuse other genres with PULP? If I wanted to write a PULP / HORROR or a PULP / SCI-FI could I do that or does the setting have to be in a realistic pulp / noir world?

Now comes the hard part, writing the darn thing.

There are a lot of old pulp stories that are either in the public domain or have unknown authors. Are adaptations allowed?

There are a lot of old pulp stories that are either in the public domain or have unknown authors. Are adaptations allowed?

Public domain adaptations are allowed as long as you credit the original work on your title page.

Adaptations not in the public domain are fine as long as you get permission from the original writer and also give credit as well on your title page.

Is there anything specific in the rules to scripts that you've started in the past but never finished? Meaning, does every word have to be written between Nov 1 and Dec 10?

Thanks.

You can't use an existing draft of something that's sitting on a shelf, that includes partial drafts too.

However, you can use existing ideas you've got stashed away.

Waking dream is cool, hallucinations are very pulp.

What a relief. I've been having trouble figuring out how I would incorporate a dream sequence into this one, but a hallucination would be much easier. I didn't even think to ask about that type of variation of a dream sequence. I'm such a doof. Thanks Mr. Nicholson = JDS.

Isaac, can we mix in other genres with PULP? My idea is a blending of sci-fi with pulp/detective noir. Will this be admissible?

Isaac, can we mix in other genres with PULP? My idea is a blending of sci-fi with pulp/detective noir. Will this be admissible?

Obviously I'm not Isaac and so my opinion means nothing, but... many of the old pulp magazines were sci-fi, including the venerable Analog, so I would certainly think that should be acceptable.

Obviously I'm not Isaac and so my opinion means nothing, but... many of the old pulp magazines were sci-fi, including the venerable Analog, so I would certainly think that should be acceptable.

Thanks Captain Pierce. I was wondering because the rules seem to define it as strictly detective / noir.

I recently decided to take a look at "pulp" on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulp_magazine). I see that pulp really covered a lot of genres. This seems to be a very loose theme for a fest, meaning that there might be a wide variety of different types of material submitted. Then again, maybe most that enter will stick with a noir-ish world and atmosphere.

Noel Evans

Currently have two in the pipeline. First draft on each done. I am doing some tweaking to see which one plays out the best (and yes I have just re read all the feedback on fest2 - I am still trying to leave people with a sense of taking something away from it, but have those gaps filled).

Nektonic

Geez Noel, take your sweet time why don't ya?

So far I have three ideas. I like all of them but I know which one I will focus on. If there's time to write more than one then maybe I'll see what I can do with the other two. I've got the day freed up tomorrow. I'm gonna go to the library and just write like a madman.

One thing that I was wondering about though:

My script is going to be using a lot of made up slang. Can I make a slang glossary in my script's thread so that those that want to reference it can? (Not that they would need to, since I intend to write the script so that you do not have to have access to the glossary to understand or infer the meanings of the made up slang. But hey, why not include it if you can?)

Pulp does span different genres, but one thing you can see in a lot of pulp is a cynicism and fatalistic worldview in the material. Pulp doesn't generally deal with the goodness in people, it presents the morality of characters, but often it's swallowed up by the darker side. Just something to consider.

Brandon Rice

Nektonic

Isaac, basically what you're saying is that pulp goes hand in hand with noir, or shares a lot of the same elements that make up noir. Not necessarily the typical tools of noir like a private detective and a femme fatale, but the darker underworld / nightlife of noir. So for example, something like Blade Runner or Neuromancer could qualify as pulp / noir but with the sci-fi elements also being a major ingredient of the entire piece.

I understand what the definition of pulp is, but just wanted to examine the boundaries of the definition as it pertains to this fest.

I'm going to the darkside as well, but just in a strange way that will hopefully be something interesting and fresh. Okay, time to get back to writing my script.

I need a little help with this. I don't really understand what pulp fiction is.

Is it like gangster/ mobster/ gambling/ drugs/ prostitution/ shoot-'em up kind of stuff? I get the feeling that it's generally OLDer things. Men with suits and fidora's and women with fur coats and long cigs? Any suggestions of movies to watch would be appreciated.

alex whitmer

Watch "Pulp Fiction", for one.

Anything with Femme Fatale roles. "You only live once" from 1937, or anything Bogart and that 'hardboiled' detective stuff.

More up to date would be "L.A. Confidential".

Think moral abiguity driven by sexual undertones.

Pulp Fiction is an old term used to make cheap and creative wrtitng to the masses by printing on cheap paper (pulp). They were spicy and full of what might now be considered cliché. Bogart-style detective stories and Rad Bradbury sci-fi were from the original pulp fiction period.

Think hot Damsels in distress, and lone detectives bent on rescuing them - and then spanking them.

pulp: a magazine or book printed on rough, low-quality paper made of wood pulp or rags, and usually containing sensational and lurid stories, articles, etc.

pulp fiction: fiction dealing with lurid or sensational subjects, often printed on rough, low-quality paper manufactured from wood pulp.

Nektonic posted the Wikipedia article on the subject that inspired me, as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulp_magazine

The official rules are pushing more the "hardboiled" detective crime story aspect of the pulp magazines, but technically there's a much wider variety to be chosen from (at least, if Wikipedia is to be believed :) ). Not sure that some of the things listed in the Wiki article would meet the rules, though...

Any suggestions of movies to watch would be appreciated.

Based on how broadly the Wikipedia article characterizes pulp fiction, I'd think any of these would fit:

The James Bond series (especially the early ones)

The man-with-no-name Spaghetti Westerns (Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, etc.)

From Dusk Till Dawn

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Why do people keep trying sooo hard to broaden the descriptions of these festival rules to such incredible lengths!

Not according to the first post in this thread, those were only examples:

Genre: PULP FICTION
(Examples: Hard-boiled noir films of the 40’s and 50’s, Guy Ritchie, Sin City, and obviously Pulp Fiction)

Isaac later says that pulp spans different genres:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1463550&postcount=36

It's his call of course. Hopefully it isn't just noir/gangsterism, I wrote a pulpy WWII story.

cynicism and fatalistic worldview in the material.

That which Isaac brings up is more attune to Noir - in particular rather than pulp! Not that pulp isn't but i think if Isaac is quoting a group of gangster films, (or neo-gangster films like sin city) then i think its safe to say its not likely 'pulp' sci fi or westerns' was the intended aim!

However I think this needs to be clarified, as noir is one thing and 'pulp' is another. To me it seems obvious by his examples, but id like clarity as to the rules?

Hey, welcome!!!

Uploading will be after December 10th, and DVX will announce how and when right about then. December 10th is the last day writers have to polish their script, convert to pdf to double check margins didn't get out of whack, and wait for the 'official download page'.

In the meantime, you can start your own thread to annonce the script, maybe the tiniest clues via a logline or something of the likes, and maybe a poster!!

Once the scripts are uploaded and reading begins, there will be a direct link to your thread to comment and discuss it.

Glad you made it.

I'd be curious to know more exact details as well. My story is a sci-fi / noir, so will I be disqualified because it has sci-fi tones, or will it be admissible based on the basis that it is at heart a noir piece but merely has sci-fi blood in it as well?

That's a great article, Alex. This site has some great overview info as well (plus lots of images of the old pulp magazine covers):

http://www.vintagelibrary.com/pulpfiction/PulpFictionCentral.php

James Bond and Indiana Jones both started out in the pulps:

http://www.vintagelibrary.com/pulpfiction/characters/Indiana-Jones.php

I didn't know that Louis L'amour started out in the Western pulps:

The Adventure genre seems to be the biggest in terms of volume:

So what about the noir and fatalist comments that Isaac said and the coincidence that all his films mentioned as examples were variances of gangsterism.

Don't get me wrong, its a great article, but i mean lets face it if we're going by that, then what was the significance of Isaacs description. He mentioned pulp alongside that, he didn't say go look up the very meaning of this word 'pulp' and find every broad definition acceptable within that?

Hehe unless Alex your saying officialy fest rules wise that its okay for sci-fi, western and anything pulp... but i think the fatalist noir was more the angle intended here.

Writing something that is darker, fatalistic within a pulp perspective (ie like the films we have examples of) is a far cry - a faaaar cry from writing a Pulp sci fi story about Dan Dare... or James Bond!!!! I mean come on lol

What about something like Blade Runner or Dark City though? I feel that something like that would be acceptable because both examples wouldn't exist in their current form without their pulp/noir qualities. Now if you write a Star Wars style space opera then yes, that wouldn't fit. Plus I find it really fun when we are not limited by genre so much as a theme (like Scriptfest I -- pursuit) or a specific type of story. In the future we could just as well do "B-movies" or "Grindhouse" as a theme instead of genres like sci-fi, horror, drama, etc.

Thanks Alex and Grizzly. Those articles look like good reads. I'll have to check them out.

I think I'm going to write a giallo for this fest! It's the Italian version of a pulp story.

This will be my first scriptfest so I hope I don't embarrass myself. lol I look forward to reading everyone's stuff.

How do you know if something is in "the public domain"?

Im cruising along at this stage, not rushing it, letting it come to me when it does. Hows everyone else going?

I haven't started yet. I'm not focusing on it too much, hoping the idea will come to me. I don't want to force it. Rest assured, though, I'm in. :)

So far I'm still building the story structure and am pretty much done with the world building stage (mine takes place in a sci-fi setting, so the world had to be constructed). The good news is that I've come up with a wealth of material, enough to expand this idea into a feature length piece at a later date, and maybe even a trilogy. Right now I'm focusing on the short version because if I get ahead of that I will be tempted to stuff this thing way too full for ten pages.

As for the plot and writing of the script, I thought I had it nailed, then had to stop myself from getting started right away because there was a big plot problem. I'm glad I didn't jump in whole hog yet, because I would have wasted some time once I hit the plot holes and other speed bumps that are worked out now.

I still need to design a poster. That can wait until later this weekend or until next week.

One night I had the basic concept in my head... the next night the final piece popped into my head, and I wrote the first draft... I'm now on draft 3... which was just some small tweaks from draft 2... Draft 1 to 2 saw some minor to medium changes within' the script, but no major changes to characters or structure.

Woah, there! It's not even December yet! Give a flightless bird some time to get words on paper.

oooooooohhhhhhhhh, only seven days remaining... How are we all progressing with our scripts?
I have a friend currently reading through for me and then I hope to have my 4th and final draft ready for the competition.

Yikes...I've been out of the loop for awhile. Not sure if I can knock something decent out in a week or not.
Either way I'm looking forward to reading everyones entries.

Man. I have to express my disappointment at discovering this thread like this.

I visit the site every so often, generally with camera questions, and I stumbled across the last ScriptFest whenever it was. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the entries, thought I would join the next one when it was announced. So I've checked back every so often.

But now I find that it was announced ages ago, just halfway down the page?? And a great subject, something I'd love to be part of, but somehow it comes across as a competition for those who were in the know in the first place. I would never have known if I hadn't been looking for something in the FCP thread.

So I'll have a stab and throw a couple of ideas at it, but now I have a few days, on top of all my other work, and I'm pretty disappointed with that. Is there no way that DVXuser could have an email list that announces these things? We have to enter an email address anyway to join don't we?

I'll do my best and look forward to reading other entries, it is certainly a competition for the taking part rather than the winning anyway.

These mini-fests are still somewhat in their infancy. But we've made this common location to house them all and will be doing more to remind you as we get the system running a bit smoother.

So yes there is more we (dvxuser) can do to make sure you are aware of these ongoing contests and the good news is those things are in the works.

I'm thinking it might have a lot to do with where this fest is on the main page. I think a lot of people just don't know it's happening.

I think you're right. Maybe it would be better to keep all current fests grouped together at the top, and push the news box down one. With all these fests, it's very easy to miss them.

Judging from the number of threads started for DocFest and AdFest, they are also getting missed.

Move 'em to top guys!!

Same here. Or how about tomorrow morning. I'm trying to get mine trimmed down to fit in the page range limitations.

If you're out there, let us know Isaac.

Awe, that sucks. I was curious to see what you were going to enter. Your last two were very well done.

To next time then.
