They won't merge anything. It's just the 'Softimage' name that's going to be changed. The UI will stay the same and so will everything else.

I read that they bought that one and something else. The latter escapes me at the moment but is a well known name also. It was posted on either cgsociety or renderosity I'm sure, but I've hit many sites today.

From google...

They bought it primarily to own the competition. Plus, at 35 million that's a steal. XSI has been catching up lately and some of their tech is really pushing the envelope. It's always been the app I wanted to learn next, albeit now with less desire. Let's hope they don't stifle innovation and development. Puts C4D in a unique position too as being one of the last leaders in this market, IMO.

Indeed. 35mill is cheap steal from such a successful app. :(

This sucks from the competition point of view. And I just updated my XSI as well.

I don't see why it "sucks" ;

I've used AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Max and now I'm moving to Maya; and if XSI is owned by Autodesk I may just have to give that a wirl too. :D

It sucks from the point of view that XSI's development might get stifled as a result of this. From what I can tell, Maya has been dormant since it's acquisition, so it stands that could happen with XSI too. Granted it takes time to wrangle all the code bases to a point where development can move forward, but that's now exponentially more time consuming with another app under their roof. It seems that Autodesk is trying to bring inter-compatibility between them all first and foremost, which is great, but at what expense?

Hmm I see your point, so in the long term surely its a positive, granted if its not so good in the in the short term?

Well, that's considering they don't kill some of these apps that they're buying. We'll see what happens, both monoliths in software (Adobe and Autodesk) are in curious positions for the long term.

Adobe seems to do a much better job of assimilating than Autodesk. I was learning XSI, but this just makes me pause and think about learning Max.
