YES! "Attack of the 100 Foot Lady with a Mushroom Cloud Swimsuit" would be an AWESOME example of a war. Like battling a giant mangi...
It's a good example! ;)

Seems like some of the best shorts for Betrayalfest and some of the finalists all had an element of suspense in them...which ironically the current script fest is suspense related... HitchcockFEST.
Suspense is a great story element and a fairly simple and cheap concept to work in at the low budget level. If it's actively pursued it could lead to a lot of great entries.... just a thought.

Susepense isn't a theme... most narratives HAVE some elements of suspense going on anyway so I don't see the diffrence than just having a "StoryFest". Maybe a more practical application than just an abstract concept such as "suspense"?

There were quite a few that didn't have suspense in betrayalfest including my short. Some were jampacked with it. A lot of narratives have elements of things like comedy, action, horror, suspense, that doesn't make them a comedy or action film. I'm talking about it being a predominant theme or element, that's sort of how themes work..not something lightly injected inside.
And if most narratives have some element of suspense...why is there a category for it... mystery/suspense and thriller/suspense (hint: because that is their predominant theme)

I think you should do your research Rodney on the categories and genres of cinema. A lot of films aren't full of suspense, enough so that there are categories and sections for those movies that are. It is a theme, not some abstract general all encompassing idea.
But if you think the idea sucks, then that's cool. It's not like I'm in love with it..if I got to choose, I'd want a comedyFEST. Just trying to suggest something that's maybe in line with the current scriptfest....whatever you guys want to do...I'm game for. I had fun on the last one...so it's whatever.

Okay, so the idea sucks. I was just trying to point out that alof of stories, even comedies and documentaries have an element of suspense somewjere in there. Will he kiss the girl or will he goof up this time? Will their plan fall apart before the end despite the hilarity that has followed them? It's all part of good storytelling. Now some of them amp up the suspense, yes, but just like a TarantinoFest.. woudl you really want to sit through 50 films that are all suspenseful?
Ugh. I can;t even fathom it.

If they had naked women in them??? Naturally... I mean of course...
But I think the use of the world 'suspense' when applied to a genre of film/story, pretty much includes 'crime/horror'. Other genres do play with deferred resolution, that is hold some element/question in 'suspended' state until a later resolution...
The reason, from my point of view, as to why many of the Betrayal fest films had 'suspense', is because they often centered on the illicit, and the revelation of the illicit.
My gedankenexperiement entry, which I never got the time to write out, or film, was centered on poker player 'tells', how an individual betrays themself... the 'suspense' element would be when the tells add up to the buff being called...

Eh, suspense is not a theme. It's a genre. As is thriller. So suspense/thriller is a combined genre. You can also have comedies that have suspense in them. Or a drama with comedy, which would be what is coined as a dramedy genre.
Examples of themes are betrayal (like in the current BetrayalFest) or love.
You could have a HitchcockFest and it doesn't have to be just suspense. Hitchcock is known for instilling macabre and comedy in his films as well. So filmmakers can make a Hitchock styled film, but they can still be varied. Even though you can find many, many, many common motifs throughout Hitchcock's body of work, each film tends to stand apart on its own for the most part. I would argue that if someone wanted to make a Hitchock-styled comedy they could do it, and it would probably be very interesting.

With Westfest winding up, I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm too clenched to resist.
The fall fest is typically some type of Halloweenish subject, yes?
How about:
ghost fest
dread fest
mystery fest, not the mystery genre, mysteriousness.
hell fest
night fest
dark fest
morbid fest, as in unhealthy, diseased, grisly.
Certain to be rejected but I like it:
Lovecraft fest: tentacles required.
Does it have to rhyme with fest? That's kind of limiting...
possessed fest
oppressed fest
obsessed fest
cardiac arrest fest
ice chest fest

Whichever it is, its going to be pretty hard to do a decent job. With he delay over Westfest, the earliest they will probably announce it is Aug19, and that only gives 2.5 months to finish, assuming its still for haloween. Maybe a preliminary announcement would be a good idea this time around.

PsycheFest - Films emphasize the psychological motives behind the characters.
LieFest - Stories that unfold due to a lie that was told to or by one of the characters.
SinFest - Stories related in some way to one or more of the seven deadly sins.
MythFest - Stories that deal in fables and mythology. The author could invent a myth of his/her own as well.
WhatIf-Fest - Films that explore a single "what if" about the world we live in. "What if we could communicate with a deceased loved one once a year on a special day?" "What if all the boulders in those woods are actually ancient trolls that were exposed to light?" Etc.
I like the idea of something like LieFest in which there's a central device to all the films in the festival. You could easily expand on this idea. PromiseFest could be a series of stories based on promises that were made and broken, or promises that were kept.

Everything goes. I think this will support the discussion/question about why not as many peeps are entering. This will give people a chance to work whatever angle is best for them. I know that "judging" this will be a nightmare....but I do think you'll get more entries.

RomanceFest - must include a kiss
SilentFest - Required element: no dialogue
ZombieFest - required element: a kitten
PeriodFest - required element: must take place in one (or more I guess) of the following: the middle ages, WW1/2, the 50s/60s/70s...etc.

That's right, Halloween is coming and it's always a slasher/gore fest. I propose we have
"Halloween Spoof Fest"
For the first time instead of making haunting, serious, scary flicks, how about we let the funny in filmmakers go wild on Halloween? It would definitely be a different twist. Everyone dies, no one dies, whatever, just "spoof" any horror film and make it your own.

Well, I for one would like to know now if thats the case. I have some ideas for a few shorts I can make if there is not going to be another full fest. But I dont want to start if there will be a full fest announced in a week or so. Thats why it would be nice for the admins to tell us whats happening next at the end of each fest. We can then start to plan our lives for the next 3 months. I would certainly be annoyed if there was no announcement for a month then a 48hr feat was announced, that would be a month of wasted time.

For me, the problem with a music video is... well... the music... with all the brewhaha about copyright, and the legal vultures circling, it would be difficult to get music, other than some selection from a 'creative commons' licensed work, that could be used in such a project.
I also think that perhaps if there was such a fest, it should be take one of 5 selections that the 'committee' has approved of, which the filmmaker does have 'legal' right to use. This may too much of a restriction for some...

Halloween is no laughing matter... it is the most serious fest of the year... How would you like to see Passion Play Spoofs around Easter... "Life of Brian"(1979) not withstanding...
Personally I think Valentine's Day would make a better day for spoofery... the whole RomCom genre begs, pleads, nay demands a spoof...

Maybe it's different in other areas, but around NYC there are literally hundreds of indi-bands who would love to have their music turned into a music video.
Moby put out a contest a few months ago for 3 of his selected new album songs. The 'use' license was significantly restricted to allow a filmmaker to make a music video, but pretty much limit it's presentation to a few narrow situations.
If there could be some sort of Creative Commons offering from such bands, I could see it working... otherwise for those not in a 'indie' plentiful area, or in my case, no 'indie' contacts... it would be pretty much a watch from the sidelines affair... I already have that problem with fest definitions that would allow me to submit... because of time mostly, I can't...

Unless the band doesn't have to be present. It wouldn't be a problem if it was just a short set to music without the ever present band playing in the warehouse next door.

but, ideally, either way, we will announce our intent officially several weeks out from the actual "shoot dates" for the fest. we'll of course reserve the juicy details for the beginning of the actual shoot dates, but will make sure there is several weeks for word to spread about it first.

Well there is pretty much no chance of my being able to do a 48/week fest, and it would be nice if I didnt have to check back every week or so to see if I have missed any fest announcements.
So it would be a great help for me and I'm sure lots of others, if you could create a new thread in the news section specifically for new fest announements. You could then lock the thread to admin/mod only postings, and post in the thread when a new fest was starting. Users could then use the email subscription option to get notificatrions of postings to that thread and thus be informed when a new fest will start. Failing that, a real email list would also work.
You need a way of specifically notifying interested parties of the fests rather than hope they check back often just to see if anything has been announced.
What do others think?

There isn't going to be one!Who said? If they do a 48 hour fest next there will be plenty of time for another Fest before Oct 31st.
All they need to do is announce (soon) that there will be a 48 hour fest in two weeks. In two weeks they give out the criteria/film requirements and round 1 starts two days later. They could even announce both festivals (48 hour and Halloween Fest) at the same time. Allowing ample time for those just aiming at the Halloween Fest to get started.

And this is precicely the point I have been making all along. The statements of intent are few and not very clear leading us to have all sorts of ideas. I saw them doing a 48hr fest some time in the next few months with the full fests starting again in the autumn. A clear post by jason on their intent and timeline would go a long way to clarifying where we all stand.

I don't know if this is a possibility, but to allow people to not be hovering over their hot computer displays, around the world... one could have sort of a 'day' to obtain a 'ticket' with a time stamp, encrypted, which part of the process describes the project details, maybe even requires a specific item from that particular filmmaker, encoded in the 'ticket', then within 48 hours, have the ticket used to authenticate the submission.
One thing that I've seen for Siggraph submissions, is to have a cksum, actually an MD5 hash of the package, of one's submission materials, then posting the cksum by the 'official close' of submissions, but then if the upload takes a 'long time', or there are problems, once uploaded the materials are 'checked' against the cksum, and if there is a difference the submission is rejected due to tardy submission, if they match, the package is accepted.
This would allow for a little bit 'looser' time, but still maintain the 'get something done in 48 hours'...

Can I put a vote in for something less dark? The last two have been VillainFest followed by ScareFest. Unfortunately, both of my entries for FictionFest were dark (my first time trying that). The one before that (I wasn't in), but I'm sure it was dark as it was at Halloween, no?
I've also thought of MusicFest, but in a different way. Find a popular song, and recreate the entire song through a story (using at least 1 full line of the song as dialogue).
