So, I am planning on making my second year graduate film using the d90.

I have found so much information on this website that has all been great. The film it self is going to be about 13 min long. We will be using a film stage and tripods with fluid heads and a fisher 10 dolly. Using studio lights and nets and flags and all that fun stuff.

Also using a mixer and a boom mic going to an outside source (sd card). I have done some tests with the sound mixer, and after recording 4:30 sec, the sound was off sync by one frame. Its a pretty easy fix, but i think I can mess around with the settings on the sound recorder.

I am still trying to figure out a few things. So any advice or tips (for cheap) will help.

- FOCUS: I can rent a follow focus from school but not sure how to connect it to the lenses i will be using

- Has anyone connected the camera through HDMI and use an outside monitor while recording

- battery life on recording video?? (i have no idea)

- The camera heating up? Still unclear after much research

- back focus? if the camera does heat up... not even sure that would happen... but dont know

Thats about it, thanks for the help or comments.

- FOCUS: I can rent a follow focus from school but not sure how to connect it to the lenses i will be using

Go with plastic lens gears, you can get them from redrockmicro.com among other places. Choose for the size of the focus ring on the lens.

- Has anyone connected the camera through HDMI and use an outside monitor while recording

Yes, works fine, but will turn off the camera lcd when plugged in, which is fine for most situs (except external monitoring whilst still using the rear lcd for framing)
Note that the composite out does not turn off the back lcd when plugged in, but then not high def.

- battery life on recording video?? (i have no idea)

I went through two batteries one day, on video, but very unscientifically, and it involved multiple immediate reviews of the shots on the back lcd.

- The camera heating up? Still unclear after much research

Still unclear to me also. I did have it overheat on me a few times, thought it was the hot day. Even suspected using a slower sd card which made the buffer work harder... Suspect it was leaving it recording for the whole 5 mins during multiple takes, or also leaving the lcd on for extended periods without recording. Consensus seems to be if you switch off the lcd between shots and dont do lots of back to back 5 min takes (unlikely anyway), then you should be fine.

- back focus? if the camera does heat up... not even sure that would happen... but dont know

Good question...

cheers

thanks, for the insight. I looked up follow focus rings. Going to look into buying them if I can fit them into my budget, might have to find a place to rent them.

I am sure more questions will arise. I will keep you posted.
