Well unless I can't get this one done I have nothing to offer if we have a slacker fest but I could submit another dead project that i have not finished if that would work.

I must have missed this thread...
how about slacker fest, a fest for all the films that were made for other fest but didn't make the deadline?

This is funny because just yesterday my production partner called and said "So I guess we aren't doing that surprise piece for TwilightFest?" and I said, "Well, we could always do some pickup shots for the TimeFest short we never finished, toss a ball in there somewhere and call it cake." Then I saw this and laughed. :)
Now, shouldn't we move this discussion to the new official thread?

I'm thinking it does not have to be comedy fest per say.
I mean if we have a theme, you can then apply any genre to that theme.

Here we are looking forward to the next fest while still mopping up the blood from this one.
I'll toss in my opinion hat and suggest Children's film. The current trend is Goo Goo Ga Ga films. Talk to kids like idiots, and you get idiots.
I would love to see what the brilliant minds at DVXuser could do with this. There have been a few sprinkled in the past fests, but I sure would like to see an all-out effort to really tackle this area.

alex, children, what aspect of children. Their learning methods, personalities, talents, or all of the above and much more?
WayneB
10-28-2008, 04:31 PM
After giving Alex's idea a little more thought I think it dawned on me. A children's story. Designed for children to help them in some aspect of their little lives. Freiendships, character building, truth, etc.
I could vote for something like that for the next Fest.
Winner would be judged on production not ideas being presented. Or some sort of 30% idea and 70% production.
Yeah, if even in my own mind, this is beginning to take shape.

Mattykins, Yes, except it wouldn't have to be an animation, could be and/or some portion of it could be.
I think Alex has started something, a movement, and she might be the first to say here "I don't want it in your bowels, wayne, but in the DVXUser group as a whole."
Then she may say, I'm trying to put words in her mouth. For which I appologize, SORRY.
I just like the Children's Film idea.
Mattykins
10-28-2008, 05:14 PM
Oh I understand that, I would most likely try the animation route myself. I really like the children concept. I think it would really push us to move away from the gun = drama.

SilentFest
That would force the filmmakers to tell a story visually (and not rely on dialog).
RoadFest
Road films are usually pretty fun.
I would also agree with ComedyFest.....although everyone should have the option on making their film a comedy or drama or other etc.... And, I think comedy may be the hardest thing to write (well, good comedy).

Where I would love to do a comedy, it makes sense that the theme should be open enough for people to do nearly any genre. I think the best way to try and figure out the next fest is to guess when the due date will be. So if January is going to be the the due date then maybe something like "Love" fest for Valentines? Sort of like last year.
Maybe Animal fest? (how hard would it be to do something that includes animals as a major character?)
Who dun it fest? (like the game clue ?)
Sports fest? in honor of the superbowl but it doesn't have to be football.
Music Video fest
Sitcomfest (present a cast of characters that are on going... don't kill them off :) sort of an ode to friends or MASH or Seinfeld.
mocumentry-fest
Reality TV fest
copdrama fest

All and more. Anything but the idiotic stuff out there now, most of which is written with the box office in mind, and kid's brains be damned.
Can you say Disney damage?
I don't know - like how children deal with the death of a pet or loved one. Fear of the first day of school, a comparison between kids who play outdoors and those who never leave their computer cubicle.
A child learning something new, like the bicylce and the drama of success and failure.
Somthing lighthearted, something sad, something only kids do.

As in a prior statement, I'm new at this. I have had an exerience with a children's piece I did in a college Television Production Class a couple of years ago. It was an effort to depict a childs imagination, what did they see or imagine when they (he in this case) played with a superhero toy like Batman or with a toy dinasour?
While I can't say for sure what the child was seeing my depiction of images from an adult perspective was moving to the viewers. It wasn't sciece, it wasn't even done technically correct, but it got a great grade!
A children's film fest could be a rewarding project with tremendous challenges and astonishing satisfaction in the results.
We all have kids, well that maynot be true, but we all have access to children. Both they and we can benefit from such an experience.

I must appologize, if I could write, I could have reduced the above to a couple of sentences.:(

So if we do a childrens film fest does that mean we have children in it, or we let them direct it and shoot it? If the kids have to shoot and direct, I have an advantage, I've been training my little rugrats! Maybe I'll have them make a film for the next fest!

As I have recently posted in another thread on the same subject:
More ideas:1. TrueFest - films inspired by true stories, facts or events. Not to be confused with films that are based on such stories or events, this fest lets you find inspiration in popular/less-known past stories or events (from the first days of the ancient history to contemporary events), and reinvent/develop them creatively in literally any way your heart tells you! The freedom of this creative challenge is enormous! you as a filmmaker may present or interpret any favorite event into a drama/action/comedy/thriller/sci-fi/crime/horror/disaster/else film, freely. I believe that's gonna make a great, very interesting and creative fest.
As I type more ideas here, I realize that I, personally cannot beat the first one. They all seem minor compared to it, but judge yourself! you may like these ideas more!2. I was thinking of the option of limiting the original idea to more specific kind of events and still maintaining a free choice of genres, for examples, films inspired by real major crimes! I guess that would be a CrimeFest!
3. SolutionFest - solve humanity's greatest mysteries! take your favorite myth and show the world it's not a myth! how did the universe begin? does God really exist? are we alone in the universe? what really happens to us after we die? is there such a thing as reincarnation? You may choose whatever mystery you want to solve your way, and present it in literally any genre desired. A lot of room for wild creativity! Working on or watching a film in which the world responds very realistically to now-officially-solved mysteries is, for me and I am sure for others as well, a rare experience. Speaking for myself, that would be the first time where I would definitely download and watch every single entry, out of pure joy.
4. 2100Fest - show us your vision of the year of 2100! The actual time may be a major focus of the film (as in many sci-fi movies), or equally nothing but the setting, allowing you to present for example future dramas, future crimes or else, show us your creativity!
Any favorites?

I would like to throw in a VETO for kids fest. After doing a piece with two 5 year olds I would like to say I will never use kids again as long as I can help it. They got mad at each other for following my directions.
I'd vote for comedy fest. This one was "why so serious" for me.
