What resolution after compressing down to 50mb will your video be? Are most peoples videos going to be about 320x240? 640x480? Etc.

my h.264 compression at 640x360 has been yielding me a 35mb file. That's just using the default settings for broadband viewing. I'm gonna mess with them more and see how big I can push the size and the compression to get it just under 50mb.

The last fest. I was in (Love Fest) I think mine was 320x240 and everybody elses was much, much larger than mine and looked better. So, I'm definately going bigger this time. Don't know what yet though. Going to try and combine as much quality with size as possible.

Okay, this sucks. I've taken mine down to being 640x345 (1.85:1 if curious) as a QT mov, and I have to set the bit rate at 128kbps to keep the file JUST BARELY under 50mbs. It looks HORRIBLE! I literally cannot read the title because the compression is so bad.
Now when I set the bit rate to 250kbps, it's much more clear and easier to watch, still kinda crappy, but not too bad, except then it goes to being about 53mbs.
Here's some proof. These are full res screen grabs of the dvxuser header, and my title, both at 128kbps.

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/29938/1224787066.jpgIs it a H.264 Quicktime? Did you follow THESE (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1425376&postcount=7) steps?

I followed "those steps", used a bit rate of 900 and 720x405, and got a 46Mb file. look great.

Yep, using "those steps". Although I think those steps are for people using FCP, I'm using Adobe, and I don't have as many options (I can't restrict the data rate or the quality of encoding, everything else is the same), but as stated before, the only way I'm able to get the file smaller than 50mbs, is to set the bit rate to 128kbps, which produces the images I've shown above.
And yes, in case anyone asks, I am compressing at using H.264.

How long is your film? Mine is almost a full 6 minutes, and just for laughs I tried it at 960kbps, and the file is about 81mbs.

You're missing something. How many passes? What's the quality setting? Try in between medium and high. Trust us. This can be done, we've all done it for previous Fest's. Like I said, maybe you need QT Pro.
My offer still stands.
Cheers,
Mike

I have no control over how many passes. I've attached an image for you all. This is what I see (I resized it about 70%). At 500kbps (as shown in the image below as my chosen bitrate) my file is about 63mbs.

Check your audio settings as well.

This is it with the advanced settings displayed. The audio is set at 32kHz, 16 bit, Stereo.

24 bit color seems excessive for web delivery. Knock that down to 16 (heck, even 8 will do you) and see if that helps.
Also, don't use PCM audio, that's uncompressed. Try AAC.

I'll check out the audio, although with the color bitrate, you'll notice in the image, that's not a button. I have no controll over that.

krestofre, no AAC option. Here are my options:

AAC will make a big difference in file size.
EDIT: You need to choose H.264 instead of Quicktime for your format. That will get you AAC. It will also give you more control over bit rate settings.

When I choose H.264 (as apposed to quicktime) for my format, the only file type I'm allowed to save it as is .3gp

Problem temporarily solved... details soon to come, thank you all, still investigating a couple things... video a bit interlaced though, don't like that, may have to live with it. Oh well.... full report in an hour. Thanks again.

You will be able to fix the interlacing as well. Good luck and get back to us.

Okay, well, the main problems have been solved, though there are now new problems.
I can now export the file (as an mp4, not a mov) at a decent resolution, 1100kbps, and the picture looks great, and the file is under 50mbs. The problems now are 1, it's obviously interlaced. But that doesn't bother me too much, as long as people can watch the darn movie, and 2, this is a big problem, the audio is not synced up with the video now, it's a little off.
Am I seriously the only one having all these problems? Why can't any of this just work well and go smoothly? (last part is rhetorical, please don't respond)

By the way, much much thanks to everyone for their help in figuring out my first problem. If anyone has any ideas regarding the new issues I'd greatly appreciate hearing them. :)

I'm not very familiar with the program you're using to encode. It seems awfully limiting as to what you can do. You said you're using Adobe? Are you exporting out of PPro? Maybe send the whole thing to AE and export from there? That might give you more control.
My other suggestion is drop $30 for Quicktime Pro. Then I, or any number of people here, could walk you through it.
Sorry I'm not more help.

If I do that, do I need to initially export the film first and then take it into QT Pro? Or does it export initially THROUGH Quick Time Pro? And if I need to export it once first, what format should I use?

You'll need to export it first to take it into QTPro. I would suggest exporting in the same format you edited in. If you're using a DVX, export as DV, if you're shooting some kind of HD, export in that format. Then feed it to Quicktime and follow the guides posted on the forum. It should get you through it.
Honestly, Adobe should be able to handle this. Maybe a post in the PPro forum might help?
